After literally 8 years of trying to remember what this game was called I finally found it. I couldn't find it for so long I thought I had dreamt it and it was never real.
Dude, same! This game, a game called "Armed & Delirious" on PC, Heart of Darkness on PS1 and Toejam and Earl for the Sega Genesis were all games I played as a kid that I spent over a decade trying to find and I've finally found them all!

Back in the late 90s I was flown out to see this game for a magazine article. I remember visiting Travelers Tales in a big converted old farmhouse. At the time they were also working on Sonic R, but they were not allowed to talk about it...
Random memory of this game made me come looking for it. Googled PS1 game with bubble gun as I couldn't remember what it was called lol. Remember running around the house for hours not knowing what to do playing this game at 7 years old. The memories.

Every single Rascal review complains about the tank controls and horrible camera, turns out both were correlated and only happened because of studio meddling. And that's really sad because otherwise it could've at the very least been a decent game.

Yes the camera was shocking by today’s standards but back then you knew no different and you just learnt to adapt. I loved this game

I was 5 when I played this and I still remember this for some reason
I spent two months working on this game. Jim Henson Workshop designed the Rascal character. Travellers Tales was about 12 members of staff in a little office above a carpet warehouse. The whole thing was done in 3D Studio R4 (DOS). Psygnosis at the time saw this as their own possible Mario IP I recall. The camera was too crazy and the environments too small to be playable. I seem to remember a lot of Lego stuff in the office - a sign of big things to come probably.

David B And from what I heard, Psygnosis were the ones that decided to replace the controls in the prototype with the crap controls in the final version.

Davers I’m curious, why would Travellers Tales hire the Jim Henson Workshop to design the main character? Why not just come up with something themselves? I mean, what JHW ended up designing doesn’t exactly look creative or unique or anything I’d expect out of them. Traveler’s Tales could have easily come up with it themselves.

my babysitter would let me play this on her playstation for hours when i was really young. reddit finally helped me find this game after it had been plaguing the corners of my mind for literally years. in my memory, all id gotten right was the haunted house part lol. the kids hat was red, and his gun was a flashlight.
Same boat. All my life I kept thinking this game was called Bubble Boy (probably because he shot bubbles from the gun) so i could never find it. Found it today on some incredibly lucky bullshit though lol
People can say whatever they want, but this game was apart of my childhood growing up. I can remember all those days of playing & without a memory card no less.
People seem to hate this game, for some reason I actually enjoyed it. Camera is frustrating but once you get used to it this game is actually really fun. The graphics are beautiful for this game as well as the soundtrack. I expected the game to be really bad cause of the negative reviews it got. But I loved it, some of the best graphics for the console at the time. Plus Psygnosis was one of my favorite companies in this era. The colony wars series is one of my favorite on the ps1. 1 through 3. G police, Lemmings is fun and wipeout too.
I used to play the demo of this game a lot when I was a kid. Therefore, despite what you say about this game, it's a classic!
Dam that music takes me back 20 years
I'm glad to see this playthrough. It helps to resolve an unresolved nostalgic thought loop in my head. Every now and then over the past couple decade I wonder, "What was that PS1 game where you play as a 90's cool kid with a bubble gun going through time to track down his time travelling grandpa? Did I just dream that?" lol :p

Man, I really loved this game as a kid although I don’t think I ever made it past the dragon. Then the disc got too scratched and all that was left in memory was that bubble gun. Good times.
The Music is Just Amazing
I used to love this game back when i was 7 or so but now i'm 23 years old and things changed. I miss the feeling that this game gave me .. particularly the music.
The potential for this game is all right there thanks to the impressive production value and other technical achievements it offers that they had pulled off on the PS1.
Jon Burton was too busy making Sonic R, which led the publisher to be in charge and make the decision of tank rotational controls which did not go with the camera system Traveller's Tales had created for Rascal.
Jon & the development team need to remake Rascal or at least a Director's Cut and make it the game it was meant to be in the first place.
This game confused the hell out of me as a kid.
Although this game has been heavily despised for its awful camera, controls, difficulty and not to mention, its repetitive and lacking boss battles, I still consider this game to be a true guilty pleasure of mine, along with some of Psygnosis' other games such as Eliminator, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Retro Force and Attack of the Saucerman, even when this was one of the first games I owned for the PS1 back in the spring of 1998. Its not as bad as most people have thought, because my thoughts on this game are way different. This game is no masterpiece by any means, but is still a decent game as long as you get used to the game's controls, and it still would be a decent game. Pretty nice playthrough btw.

Despite recognizing how horrible the controls are, i still love this game and still replay it to this day. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing

No one ever mentions this game's soundtrack, it's really good. Not that surprising given that Traveller's Tales also made Toy Story 2 and Wrath of Cortex both of which also had excellent soundtracks.
Me and my brother got to borrow this game as children, from our dads friend. We absolutely loved this game and especially the soundtrack, lol. We still remembered the soundtrack from castle past to this day, and when my brother finally found out the real title of this game (aka no, it wasn't "bubble boy" lol) - I was pleasantly surprised of how good it actually was!

I remember renting this one weekend when I was young and being very disappointed. There was a lot of hype that built up around it I remember, lots of posters advertised it and there was even a kind of messed up commercial for it.
The opening cutscene from this game is baked into my memory. Might even be my first memory ever. However, I don’t remember 1 second of the gameplay

Wherever we are in the world, we all grew up with these games guys...
Now that I've been *really* thinking about this game, I think the thing that bothers me the most about it is the fact that Rascal has no personality at all. Not one single character does. There’s no way to form any kind of connection to the game or world at all. If the characters spoke and there were some NPCs to talk to, it might have saved it a bit even if the gameplay was beyond abysmal as it was.

I honestly feel bad for the developers, as the publisher insisted that tank controls be used, even though the game was designed with directional controls in mind.
I wish Jon Burton could make a director's cut (like he did with Sonic 3D Blast) to change the controls to what they were intended to be.

Graphic is amazing for the time, music is very cool in many levels. The control gives headache sometimes.The camera is terrible. But camera is much more worse in Gex enter Gecko N64 and Bubsy 3D ps1....Many great ideas in Rascal but not executed so well.....6 out of 10 :)
