I am actually shocked to see that this just has almost 6k views and I'm the 4th comment... how? How and why does this not spread further? This is honestly more of a rethorical question cause the actual answer is simple; people don't want to see the truth. And this is honestly making me cry out of fear... I'm currently studying media management and really hope that I can make a difference in this world, but to be honest, i feel like I'm trying to fight a battle that has been "won" a long time ago. But I'll still try my best. Thanks a lot for the quality conent!

I just watched a clip of Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey being asked by Lindsey Graham whether they have seen The Social Dilemma, and the fact that Graham points to medical evidence shows how ignorant he is on the subject as well. This film should just be an intro only, to get a deeper understanding people should be reading Douglas Rushkoff, Neil Postman, maybe Marshall McLuhan. If anyone reads and actually comprehends the perspective in their work they will see we were warned decades ago. Not only is content not central ("the medium is the message") but neither is the specific kind of technology. Postmans work is significant because he saw how it was affecting American culture, which is of course now an international phenomenon. And of course a bunch of people are still only looking at the content of the news, or the comments on it, and completely unaware of both how language and the tech is used.

The statement about needing to be technically literate by Parakilas at the end was addressed by Cal Newport in this quote: “The complex reality of the technologies that real companies leverage to get ahead emphasizes the absurdity of the now common idea that exposure to simplistic, consumer-facing products - especially in schools - somehow prepares people to succeed in a high-tech economy. Giving students iPads or allowing them to film homework assignments on CZcams prepares them for a high-tech economy about as much as playing with Hot Wheels would prepare them to thrive as auto mechanics.”

Mental problems were very common even when I grew up, before social media and Internet existed! So I get quite annoyed every time I hear people claim that it's only because of social media! That's bullshit! When I was a teenager in the 90's, the world suffered from an outrageus eating disorder pandemic that killed thousands of people, mostly young girls and women. In my high school there were constantly parents- meetings, student meetings, worried teachers, very anorexic girls, bulimic girls, and talk talk talk all the time about body- ideals, food, who was slim or not slim, what to eat and not to eat and NOT ONE celebrity was anything but skinny and perfect!! Other mental issues were not known or talked about back then, but I Imagine they were very much around!
And now I hear people everywere talking as if it didnt existed before social media!? Phew! 🙄🤖😴 Please...! Envy, comparison, depression, anxiety etc has been around since mankind was invented!!
    This is yast pathetic!

Yes comparison has been around forever, and the more people are exposed to different media that they can compare themselves to, the more impact it will have on their mental health.
I’m sure the steady increase in television and movies as well as the increase in revealing clothing and different morals had something to do with what happened to teeneger’s mental health in the 90s. As you said, every celebrity was thin and perfect.
Now teenagers not only have access to tv, but phones with access to the internet. They are seeing a truly astronomical amount of information as videos, reels, music, photos, games, comments, podcasts, texts, etc. compared to any time in the past. And it is truly and scientifically having an impact not just on children’s and teen’s allover health, but on all humans. Just the light from a phone screen alone throws our natural systems out of whack.
Yes there were metal health problems in the past that were not addressed or understood. Now we have the platform to do both just in time for a large societal health crisis caused in part by said platform. And something needs to be done to regulate it, for the next generation and for children growing up with a screen in front of their face, changing the way their brain works at critical points in their development.
