I secretly watched this video and then fixed it like a champ in front of the family. I stay winning.
I wish I would've thought of this. 😆

LOL.
You're a big fat phoney lmao I'm jealous
Lol 🤣
I’ve watched sooooo many videos and YOU and ONLY YOU were the first one to actually give an easy fix. This was soooo easy. And I look like a pro without having to go get voltage testers and go through all that. You, my friend, get a gold star. Thank you!!!!!
This video may be 9 years old, but it still is awesome! Thanks, took me about two minutes to fix my broken doorbell thanks to your video.
That's really great to hear. Glad to help!
Thank you for this! Our doorbell didn't work from the day we bought our house. The first time around, my dad got it working but recommended we replace our button. After replacing our button, it worked for awhile, but then broke again. After watching your video, I felt comfortable enough to open up the chime box and realize the fix was a super simple changing of the chime from front to back. I even taught my husband a thing or two after ;)
Thank you again for sharing!
We’ve been in our home for 9 months with a broken door bell. So thankful for your easy fix option of just moving the wire. It’s fantastic! Thank you!
We're glad it worked out for you! 😊
Thank you! This worked! Wish you had a donation button. This saved me calling a handyman!

I had a faulty door bell chime and decided to install google nest hello. The front chime kept vibrating and it thought it was something I did wrong with the installation. I was going f’n bananas for hours and was about to give up until I stumbled on this video. I rewired the chime as you instructed and voila problem solved! Thanks a million!
Was at a job, ladies ring/nest door bell went up. Changed out bad transformer but the interior doorbell still wasn’t sounding off. Swapped the wires as in video, worked like a charm.
I don't understand how anyone could give this video thumbs down. It 100% fixed my problem. This is one of the most helpful video I have watched in a long time. Thank you!
he never fixed the problem he just jeri rigged it. What if you have a rear doorbell attached? It would still be broken.
Our doorbell has been giving us grief for months! After watching this, while in my robe and slippers, I grabbed a step stool, screwdriver and needle nose pliers, fixed the doorbell, AND made a donation in less than in five minutes. Thank you so much!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉Just because u wanna see everybody eat.. don't mean it's yo job to fix their plates
I just replace my doorbell and the doorbell light came on but no ring. Watched your video and moved wire to 3rd screw (rear) and it now works. Thank you so much. You saved me time and money.
Thank you so much for the info. I fixed like a pro after 8 years. I even forgot that the door bell didn't worked until I had visitors today and I said this is embarrassing. It took me like 3 minutes to fix it. Thanks again
That's awesome! Happy to help
OMG! Thank you so much. I had someone who wanted to come out and charge me $80 to repair my doorbell for the new house I just bought. I'm a single lady, and don't mind trying to repair things myself, but the videos online were not helpful-I love This Old House, but they were no help. You are awesome! Your video was exactly what I needed to fix my doorbell, it was like you were right here with me, even down to cutting the piece with the sponge. I had to switch wires and use the chime for the back door. I cut the black piece with the sponge attached so I would get the "ding dong" effect. Thank you so much.

Thank you so much. My case: Glue came off the plastic cap on front side. The pin dropped as there was no spring tension. They painted the bell onto the wall so I didn't want to pry it loose. So I switched power to the rear and bent the stopper, making the back side ding-dong. But I will also save the plastic stopper from the front. If the back ever gets stuck, I can re-glue the front. Here's to trying to remember where I put the spring in 10 years when it finally sticks.
Thank you so much for this video, I know nothing about repair and you helped me fix my doorbell. I am so excited and proud of myself. Thank you for inspiring me and teaching me.
Wonderful!
Thank man! Switched the front wire to the rear and you just saved me a trip to the hardware store to buy a new chime
I just did this I agree and it works
Thanks so much! Totally solved my problem by switching the wire to the rear and removing the tab. Was about to buy a whole new chime. This saved me the time and expense!
Nice to hear that! Happy to help
Fixed my bell after watching this video and my husband was very impressed 😊😂
Hats off to you! Glad to help
Ten years later and your fix is still working! Just tried it and had success. I did try removing the pad and the plastic tab but this did not work for the double strike. However, it is ringing on the single note rear bell so she is happy as it wasn't working at all before. Thanks for the great tip!
Thanks so much for this video my doorbell wasn't working and purchased several plug in doorbell units (but thats another story) i came upon your video removed box and bam it wasn't even connected i reconnected the wires and doorbell works thanks
Been in my house for almost a year now and I kept putting off getting my doorbell fixed because I didn’t wanna spend. I just fixed it myself after watching this video lol. Thank you very much for the help!
Wow! This was absolutely spot on. I have this same model doorbell and this fix worked perfectly in less than 5 minutes! Thank you!
Thank you so much I’m selling my house and after removing my ring doorbell and installing a generic one I noticed that the chime wasn’t sounding. I did exactly what you showed here and it worked like a charm.
Dude, you’re a life saver. This simple fix worked for my ring doorbell and buzzing sound I was getting from a broan NuTone doorbell chime. Thanks so much!!!

I love it when someone can show me how to save time and money. Good video, Thanks!!
Thanks for the vid! My chime issue wasn't any of those that you listed(the chimes were very muted), but seeing what a correctly operating chime was supposed to look like lead me to replacing the rubber plunger to chime insulators, and all works well again!
Thank you for this easy fix. We just fixed our doorbell thanks to this video :) 😊
Great explanation, i watched about 6 videos before yours and you were the only one to explain how the doorbell really works in order for us to trouble.
Excellent! I just brought my doorbell back to life. The front plunger was stuck and I simply moved the wire to the rear connection and broke the tab, as you described here. Now the bell is working. Thanks a lot.

Thank you for this super helpful video! This video highlighted my exact issue (broken buzzing chime after doorbell was jammed), and I was able to fix my buzzing by rewiring it like you showed.
Thank you!! I've just switched the wire from the front to rear side as instructed and everything has worked out! Much appreciated!
Thank you so much. This is perfect. I only have a front door. I live in a condo. I am totally going to do what you showed us in this video and cut out the top thingamabob. Happy new year!
Worked like a charm!! Was a super quick fix :)

You should change the title to "How to Hack your doorbell system". Great idea, it worked for me. And you saved me a trip to the hardware store.
Great video. I followed your instructions and it worked perfectly. Thank you!
Thought I was going to have to buy a new chime followed the instructions and worked like a charm. Thanks!
Worked like a charm, thanks for the tip!!! It didn't want to fire back up though, I removed the piece but still no top bell. Not a big deal, saved me 30-50 bucks so I'm happy. THANK YOU
So smart so helpful. Just what I needed thank you. saved a trip to the store and buying something when something wasn't all broken yet.
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much!
Thank you! Moving the wire from the front to the back did the trick. My door bell works once again!

10 yrs later, video still helps!
Glad to help!
Great job, I just followed your video and my door bell is functioning again. I was in the process of buying a new door bell. Thanks
Great Vid! I just switched the wire from the bad striker to the good striker (removed the foam pad) and it works perfectly now! I just had a bad striker. Thanks for the awesome vid!
Thank you 😊 this video helped me fix my doorbell. I did what you said moved the wire from the front to the rear. After changing the doorbell button it lit up but when I would push the button to ring the doorbell it didn’t sound. Such a simple fix. Thank you again.
Thanks! This helped me solve my problem in
I have the same setup. Switched to rear and removed plastic bumper. Works great! Thx again
Tutorial worked like a chime...
My doorbell made a horrid buzz rather than a serene tone when pressed. I noticed the strike pin was completely stuck. I usually feel like a dumbbell when it comes to electrical repairs. But now, thanks to Tomahawk DIY, I'm ringing to a different tune. I'm sound of mind. And I no longer feel like a dingdong...Thanks Tomahawk DIY!
Thanks for the musical comment!
for stuck plunger, rub the plunger with a little dish soap on a Qtip. move the plunger up and down a few times
Switched terminals, worked like a charm! Thank you!
What a great tip. Thanks! You saved me some money and a trip to the hardware store, at least until the other side breaks in 40 years.
Very satisfied with this doorbell quick fix, thanks
very simple and direct instructions that I can follow. Thanks!
Thank you for posting. I'm a Hero in my home because of your sharing.
Great video! This helped me and my husband finally fix our broken mechanical chime. When inspecting the wiring, there appears to be black goo all over the wiring to the non functional hammer.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! This same thing happened to mine and it fixed the problem! Was able to break of that tab and everything works wonderfully ! I can't tell you how many videos I've watched trying to fix it! & I was so happy to see it was the same exact door bell I have as well so that made it so much easier for me! Thank you,From the stay at home mom

My front bell sounded weak, so I just switched it to the rear one as you said.

Your fix worked for me. I couldn't get the two chime feature to work, but the single chime is enough to trigger my secondary backup unit. Thanks!

This was my doorbell, and my issue after replacing the transformer. Perfect, thank you!
Thank you so much, it took longer for me to set the ladder up than it did to change the jumper over to the rear door terminal.

I wish I had done this years ago! Thanks for the tip!
Mine was the copper plate and wires were corroded as well as the small brass plate. Once everything was cleaned up it’s ringing like a charm! Thanks for your video it was easy to understand! Now my dog is barking his head off because he thinks someone is here! 😂 I’m happy it’s working!
That's wonderful to hear! Glad the video helped you get it working again. Enjoy the peace of mind, and sorry about your dog's new excitement! 🐶🔔
@@TomahawkDIY He’s fine! Now if I don’t hear the doorbell he will! Lol
My doorbell would only ding....not ding dong....My ex husband put in a new doorbell for me after the last one broke. After you explained how they work, I looked at mine and he had the wire going to the rear doorbell which I do not have. I should have known he would half ass that like he always did everything else.....Thank you so much. I just switched the wires and saved myself money for another doorbell. And it rings correctly !!!!!
Worked for me and saved me a trip to the hardware store! Thanks for the video.
Wow this saved me from buying a new ringer unit. Many thanks.
Thank you. This video inspired me to go to Homedepot and buy a Wire Contractors Kit. I only had to use the Chime portion of the kit. We still have the extra door bell (we use Ring Doorbell), and we have the doorbell button. Our old chime wasn't the same. However, the new Wired Doorbell kit Chime looks just like yours. Thanks again. screenprintr.
The only video that had my exact problem, thanks for the solution and for making this video!!
Glad it was helpful!!!!
Thx, I had a ceiling leak by the door bell button but tried this first and viola, problem solved. Awesome, thx and like others said, fixed without spending a cent!

thanks...altough my door bell are different type, but the concept of door bell that you explain help me a lot... :D
thank you for your tip, it worked perfect!!!
just used this fix Dec. 2020 works great!!!
Great video. I replaced the bell outside but still only had a buzzing sound. I switched the wires as one plunger is not moving - rang with one chime but lower volume than my Mother In Law recalled. I removed the foam and it's one ding but quite loud. I was afraid to removed the metal piece as I saw someone say the plunger was then not long enough to reach both plates to ding-dong. It's a very old model - an emerson 08203. But thank you so much. I wish I could unstick the other. It looks almost like it's more behind the transformer screw and wrapped in copper ( guess it's an electromagnetic coil from what I have read online ) so I did not want to mess with it to try to unstck the plunger. I'm sure that is the front bell plunger inside the copper.
