There is no one in my life who understands just how much a work a fiction can influence who we are as people and change how we choose to exist in this world. that’s why I love the internet, there’s always someone out here that gets it ❤️

I always love to write reviews whether I post them online somewhere or not. That way I really explore the pros and cons. Oftentimes, I find the good parts in a bad book and vice versa.

girlllll i wish you could do a part 2 to this because this was absolutely so insightful. i’m only a recent subscriber (like maybe a month now lol) and i’ll be studying english in college soon to be teaching english abroad and i’m a hugeeee reader. so applying these tips to translated books is gonna be soooo much fun. this video really packed a punch and has me excited to reflect more on the books i read no matter the genre.

Picking out individual quotes is such a good idea...but I mainly read physical library books and it is so much harder to keep track of quotes that way because I can't annotate 😂

oooohh from what i’ve seen, maybe you can place scotch tape over what you want to highlight, then highlight it with dry erase marker, take a picture and then take it off? idk if that’s too much work lol

I recently started just taking pictures of quotes and putting them in my notes app. If the quote is short, I might highlight it in the photo. Then I write the page number and whatever I wanted to say about it

you can use metal book darts to mark the quotes you like! then when you're done you can easily take them out of the book

YES TO EVERYTHING! I especially find that picking quotes from books I didn't really enjoy let's me appreciate them in a new aspect. Also I'm gonna see the new outsiders musical this month and i'm SO CURIOUS to see how it's gonna translate on stage as opposed to on the page (it's also one of my fav books).

That's so interesting because I purposely don't read the acknowledgements or anything like that for the same reason. I don't want to be sucked out of the story. I don't want to think that this came from someone's mind. I just want to be sucked into the story

Yes!! Totally agree that fiction, especially "unserious" genres like fantasy, dystopia, YA etc are so so underrated by people who don't read them (*ahem* my parents) because they can still have profound meaning. It's a shame that more people don't realise this.

  • @dreyspringle516

I just go on my notes app and write a whole encyclopedia of the book or universe if its a book series or a show, e.g the setting, a synopsis, detailed descriptions of the characters and their role in the story and quotes.
I thought you'd include OUR book journal system which is writing down all the quotes and passages that we love. 😂
This is another way I engage with a book that stays with me❤️

also, your talking speed is literally perfect, please never slow down!! I usually watch youtube videos on 1.5x speed but with your videos I don't have to do that lol

i'm about to start my masters in english literature and i could not agree MORE with you about all of these things. doing these things will truly give anyone a deeper relationship with what they're reading. the only difference to a more academic approach would truly be thinking about what in the book made the thesis or quote you chose stand out to you or how the author accomplished that, and to look at what other academics have said about the book in addition to actors etc!!! such a lovely video, i really appreciate this :)) having a deep relationship with your books is not only for nerds like me!!!!!

I purposely read books over a longer period of time (1/2 weeks or even months) so that I can dwell on the events of the story as it unfolds for longer. And I make sure to not read series back to back or I find that I forget a lot lol

Studies show that reading fiction actually has mire benefits than reading nonfiction! Mental health, empathy, stress, are just some of the benefits that fictional books can bring that nonfiction do not!

I really want to do the book thesis thing but it’s a little confusing. Do you find most of the quotes near the end of the book because then you know what the book is really about or can you find the quotes near the start of the book?

  • @CSXbot

Hey! I watched a couple of your videos by now, and you are smart and give a great advice that is fresh and different from the rest of booktube copy-cat videos. For example your argument that one sentence summary forces you to look at the big picture of the book is great, I need to get back to doing it again.
So, firstly, thanks for the videos, and secondly, do you have a playlist of videos like this?

Another comment, while I watching this. Authors (except the big and famous ones) have no influence over the cover, unfortunately. And sometimes over the title as well. It’s editors. Doesn’t change much of what you’ve said, because editors are editors for a reason, but can be useful to be aware of this.
