    This is the original music from the Black Swan Variation written by Tchaikovsky. Note the malevolent character of the music, giving psychological depth to Odile's character and the use of the oboe, which is the instrument associated with the white swan, both in the introduction of the first and second acts and in Odete's first appearance, functioning as a kind of "instrument-motiv".

      This is not the original music for the variation. In fact this piece is from the Pas De Six (which is omitted from modern productions) not the Pas De Deux.
      Actually the whole Pas De Deux isn't even for Odile. In the original 1877 production, It's from act 1 and is the Pas De Deux for the "Merry Makers", and the variation was a waltz. We don't know if it's the male or the female variation but Ratmansky's Reconstruction of the 1895 production (Which uses the choreographic notations of the exact production) suggests that the waltz variation was the male variation and uses the standard common variation used today. Riccardo Drigo in the 1895 revival just moved the music to act 3, and made it into the Black Swan Pas De Deux we all know today. The most common music IS the original variation. Drigo just used one of Tchaikovsky's piano pieces called L'espiègle and orchestrated it.
      If you want the ORIGINAL Black Swan Pas De Deux, which was danced by Anna Sobeshchanskaya, it's the music used in Tchaikovsky Pas De Deux by Balanchine. The original music was lost for 76 years until it was uncovered and subsequently choreographed by Balanchine.
      THIS is the ORIGINAL Black Swan Variation: czcams.com/video/VxdZenGuPYw/video.html

      Good choice. Larisa Lezhnina and Anna Tsygankova had very long and succesful careers with Dutch Ballet. While Bolshoy's director Vaziev has ho respect to anyone who is older than 30 and has no hyperextensions. In 7-8 years he would fire Smirnova as easily as he fired Kaptsova and Alexandrova. Or would hardly be giving her any job. Kretova and Shipulina are cases in point.

    Why every time I see & watch the ballet dancer from Russia even the medium skill level is already very good. The energy, gracious, elegant and the body language are always incredible and I always enjoy watching them. But soloists such as Osipova, Zhakarova, Barisnikov etc etc extremely too good. choreographer's choices

    • @vivianleenet
      @vivianleenet Před 2 lety +125

      There's two main versions of this variation - this one here, with the oboe and arms, which is a much more sinister-looking Odile. The other is the gentle one with the lilting violins, which is meant to emulate Odette's grace. Which one a choreographer chooses depends on how they want to interpret Odile. The sinister one: "Sure, Siegfried, you might be love with Odette, but Odile here is so captivating and enchanting that she will make you forget all about her." The elegant one: "Siegfried, I know this girl's dressed in black and not white, but perhaps you could be convinced that this is actually Odette?" It depends on whether you interpret the story as Siegfriend truly believing Odile is Odette, or whether you believe that Odile was so seductive that he chose her over Odette.

    • @rayboucher3690
      @rayboucher3690 Před 2 lety +41

      @@vivianleenet Fair argument. While I like the music that is often used for Odile's variation in other productions (Riccardo Drigo's orchestrated excerpt of "L'Espiègle" from Tchaikovsky's "Op. 72 for Piano"), I personally find this music (the 5th variation from the cut Act III pas de six) makes more sense for the drama of the situation that Siegfried is in. It gives off a more mysterious vibe, showing the audience that despite Odile's good lucks and resemblance to Odette (which is often a spell conjured by Rothbart to delude Siegfried), there is a sinister intention hidden inside.

    • @vivianleenet
      @vivianleenet Před 2 lety +14

      @@rayboucher3690 Oh I completely agree with you. This one is actually one of my top favorite ballet pieces, in terms of music. (I may also have a slight obsession with oboe/clarinet duets, but that's another story for another day.)

    • @rayboucher3690
      @rayboucher3690 Před 2 lety +12

      @@vivianleenet Another thing that I think is noteworthy about Grigorovich's Bolshoi staging is how dramatically the music is used for entrance and first scene(s) with Odile and the Evil Genius (Rothbart's counterpart in the Grigorovich interpretation). During the scene where Siegfried falls under the Evil Genius' power and is stricken by Odile's beauty, the music being used in the 2nd variation from the pas de six (which in other versions may be used in a "forgiveness" duet between Siegfried and Odette), and then immediately afterwards the Evil Genius performs a solo to the 4th pas de six variation. The way Grigorovich uses these themes to communicate the stakes of the narrative is really powerful/fascinating; also I'm not sure if you knew this, but earlier stagings of Grigorovich's production had a happy ending with Tchaikovsky's finale/apotheosis entirely intact, whereas current stagings change the ending to be more downer and also change the music, echoing the Introduction and the very end of the "Swan Theme". Whether or not this change is for the better or worse is up to interpretation, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

    Who received her immediately and with warm embraces.
    Now she will dance beautifully in Europe.
    And this is Artem Datsyshyn.
    A Ballet dancer of the National Opera of Ukraine and winner of international competitions.
    He will never dance again.
    He died at the hands of the Russian occupiers.
    That's all you need to know about culture outside of politics.

      Пришло просветление? Скорее наоборот. Не понимаю, уехать к тем, кто многие годы делал все, чтобы разъединить Украину и Россию. Уехать к тем, кто не щадит славян, заставляя их бороться друг с другом. Европе наплевать на то, сколько жертв будет. Европа всегда приходила к нам с завоеваниями, но всегда была бита. Так было, есть и будет.
      Артем сделал свой выбор, увы, но так. А Полунин сделал свой.
      Ольге желаю вернуться на родину. И творческих успехов, конечно.
