  • The Virtual Console is a thing of the past and Nintendo is dragging their feet when it comes to letting us buy and play older games. Here's why I think they're hurting themselves in the long run.

      @Anomaly
      That quote "Never forgotten completely" is true. Nintendo hasn't forgotten about F-Zero. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has the Captain Falcon Mii costume and his car, Blue Falcon, alongside two F-zero like courses, Mute City and Big Blue with remixes of those courses while Super Smash Bros Ultimate has Captain Falcon, as the main fighter/representative of the F-Zero Franchise, some courses and music, an assist trophy of Samurai Goroh, World of light fights(/stickers? I think) that represents some of the F-Zero characters, and some trophies.
      Nintendo should make an F-zero game for the Switch. It would be a great fit for the console. It should have a new storyline for Captain Falcon, other good characters and bad guys similar to
      F-Zero gp legend, new characters, new courses, new, machines, a lag free online mode (Lag free may never happen, I'm just being optimistic) new music, a sound test to listen to all the music from all the previous F-Zero games, and a gallery room detailing the origins and the history of all F-Zero games. That, in my opinion, would make a great addition to the Switch library.

      @retrosoul8770 Před 4 lety +4

      @@nileriver216 personally I certainly dislike that they put F-Zero material in Mario kart 8. To me it represented "yeah we're not gonna make another f-zero game but here have these crumbs in a game that is nothing like f-zero". It seemed to toy and belittle the fans and the franchise itself.
      As if you can substitute a true sequel for the technical brilliance of GX with some references in a slow casual friendly kart game.
      Being in smash is one thing and of course that's okay because that's a collective celebration of Nintendo's history but being in mk is different and rubs me the wrong way. You can't merge the franchises together, it doesn't work.
      As awesome as a new F-Zero would be as you described, fzero is as dead as 1080 snowboarding and wave race despite being better and more deserving than those franchises at least imo. But as long as I'm alive I hope that I'm wrong. At least we have Super Pilot in the meantime.

The only way for Melee players can play their favorite game nowadays is through emulation, and I know Nintendo understandably views it as piracy but they need to understand that that is the ONLY option they have. We all know Switch can handle it (Mario 3D All-Stars is proof of that) but it ultimately falls on Nintendo to actually renew these titles through emulation on their own console. Most people won't care if there is a pricetag on it; just make it conveniently available.

    Hey arlo!
    I think an important thing to consider here is that new and old games have to compete for people's time. If nintendo released too much back-content at once, fans would have an overwhelming amount to explore, and would be less incentivized to buy the newest game, which is the game that they can sell for the most money.
    Ideally for Nintendo, their online library would be as small as possible (as long as the offer seems enticing to try, which is why they slowly grow the collection), so that you eventually get tired of playing the retro games or run out of content. This is also why there is a savestate feature in the emulator. I was able to chew through super mario world a lot faster because i didn't have to restart every time i ran out of lives, and this allowed me to move on to the next game more quickly.

    • @SoftAsABaboonAss
      @SoftAsABaboonAss Před 3 lety +2

      Not enough thumbs up on this comment but basically *this* plus the "Disney Vault" marketing strategy is why the game selection is barren. Nothing can be TOO definitive/complete or you wont buy the next thing they release. That's why Galaxy 2 is not included in 3D All-Stars. That's also why some MAJOR titles were missing from the Classic consoles. They purposefully don't give you what you want now so when they sell it later, you will be hungry for it, having been missing it for years.

  • @adriangutierrez7686
    @adriangutierrez7686 Před 3 lety +2

    Great video. I do agree a lot Arlo. Great points made in this video.
    This is one of the reasons to still own a WiiU. I had not realized it, but its virtual console is a great feature. I wasn't going to get rid of it, but I did feel really cheated that nintendo abandoned it and left it mostly for the switch.
    The WiiU has even DS games, which is the only legal way to play these games on the TV. I have been regularly buying some older VC games on WiiU that I either missed or want to have again. The save state feature is great for some older games.
    The idea of being limited to only playing older games online is anti consumer because not everyone has stable internet connections in 2020 and there are things like internet outages as well. These games will also not be available once nintendo releases a new console and the older console becomes obsolete. With Virtual console, your digital games will stay as long as the console lives.

  • @JustinRittenhouse
    @JustinRittenhouse Před 4 lety +42

    Great thoughts Arlo!
    I think there could be a few perks from laying low with releasing things.
    1. It gives them a Hail Mary if things go South. Should sales fall, the boom of potential games could draw people back in.
    2. Being a high school teacher, I hear a lot that online services are popular with the upcoming adults. Tying the legacy games to online gives higher chance that newer audiences will try them.
    3. Stretching out the releases will tease people to buying the online for longer periods of time. I almost considered another year just for SNES titles.
    Overall, I think your arguments outweigh these ones. But these are possibly what Nintendo is thinking?

    • @TreatSan
      @TreatSan Před 4 lety +2

      Yeah, thoes are good arguments but generally everything is based around certain Market trends and how things will go if only they contuie the exact same route.
      1.) The things going south depends on if Nintendo catches the southward drop in time to put out enough content at a 'COst balance' to save their selves, and not at a huge loss.
      2.) Online services are a good way to attach newer people, but if that was the case then Xbox Gamepass and the Backwards combality would be making the Xbox more dominate in the market space. Nintendo on it's own has a much more loved and wider varity of games and history, but even that has it's limits to the amount of games people 'Would still play' even if they're attached to a small fee a month, when their friends are playing other titles that are 'newer'.
      3.) Stretching the release window has the tension hang that some people will jsut go play other things, leading into my response to 1, that also includes if theirs no Definate idea that 'Their title they want to play will ever appear on the subscription list'. For instances, I could love playing FF14 and pay the monthly subscription for the game cause it allows me to get new Costumes for my charater… I could see that the new costumes are only coming in for Subs, but the Class and charater I choose to play as and 'ONLY' want to play as get's either VERY sparse outfits I don't like, or none at all... Suddenly I'm playing Destiny 2 and Square says 'Here's the costume you liked for your CHarater!' buuuutttt… I'm already playing something else that is asking for my time and money, I might never go back to FF 14 for lack of intrests in the content, THe fact I'll have to replay large bits to get to said content, or just fell dis interested with the product.
      This isn't being malicious thoes are pretty good points like I said, and the good Muppet has made plenty of his own also, it boils down a lot of wither or not Nintendo is wiling to take the risk andddd… they are jsut super willing to take the long game risk that a hand full of companies do, but at a mixed bag of questions... even when Microsoft gave us backwards compatibility at no cost, the list was longer then 3 - 6 titles each, and had a long slew of Varity.

    • @TreatSan
      @TreatSan Před 4 lety

      @Soupmaster101 Even IF they release the game for them, theirs no garentee that they will continue to pay after theyr'e done with said games, and along side that is the realization that 'ALOT' of those games may have already been purchased with the other Several times they re-re-re-released them. Even if the big advantage is to play thoes games on the go, how many times will they continue to Repurchase the same game again and again cause, up till the Wii-WiiU lifetime you couldn't transfer 'Any' of thoes games to the next one (Cept maybe the DS but I never had digital games on mine to test sides the ambassador load which had most all the games from the NES mini and several Nintendo packages) The games on the Online front have a shelf life now, Nintendo has a cycle for thoes titles to be available and then not like GamePass, even if they're First party, the Switch can only hod so many games with it's limited space, and what games can go on the SD card are going to feel abit laggy if you shelled for a cheap card... or suddenly Nintendo recommends you 'NEED' proper internet access to play the games... The future is about as bright as 'Every Company working together without issue'... and if we are going further and further into Hoping companies like Comcast are going to play nicely... Yyyyyeeeaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Pokémon, MK8, Mario Odyssey all sold more than 10 million. A full library of old games won't convince people to buy a switch. They might want to revamp older games Link's Awakening style. N64 had a weird control layout and were mostly 'ugly' games. Wii games have the motion controls to take into account.

    Arlo, you are 1000% right about the switch raking in new fans of Nintendo’s various IPs. I didn’t know Zelda existed until the Switch! Yeah, my brother had played something like that on his 3DS… Ocarina of Time or something… but that was boy stuff! Not fun for a girl like me for sure! But now… Breath of the Wild done me in. Our grandparents bought us a switch and our cousin (who was living with us at the time, AND WAS A GIRL) asked for Breath of the Wild for Christmas, and because she lived with us, we got to play it too and OH WOW I remember when BotW was the most beautiful video game I had ever seen in my life. I would just sit there for hours in Target and cut grass… this is a tangent. ANYWAY, now I am the craziest Zelda fan you will ever see. I’m buyin the collectibles, I’m playin the games, I’m readin the encyclopedias. ANXIOUSLY anticipating BotW 2. Before we got the Switch we had a Wii and even a Wii U, but never picked up TP or Wind Waker or even Skyward Sword. You don’t like to use the term ‘brand loyalty’ but that is me. Slap Zelda on the cover and I’m there. The long and short of it is, the Switch is the reason I love Zelda as much as I do.

    The part about playing an old game on a different console, I totally think that’s ridiculous I wanna play Luigis Mansion 3, like you said and the newest way to play the old ones are on the 3DS, that’s great because I sold my 3DS to buy my Switch. It’s like Nintendo wouldn’t think about that. Your totally right Arlo

    I don't know if that was intentional, but it sure was nice to look at.

    As easy as it is for me to buy pre owned games for my gc, wii, ds, and 3ds, this would be extremely more convenient and make me feel more nostalgic about the switch looking back
