That was quite an intro. 5 stars would watch Dan yawn again.
Twice, even.
I wish I could think of comments like this. 🤣
"So no more metal" the saddest words said in this podcast.
Alsow OMG Brandon likes Sabaton 😱
Dan has a pleasant nose. Also, just finding out that Brandon actually reads these comments, his books got me through 2 rounds of cancer and I ended up marrying one of his co-author’s husbands cousin. Thanks for what you and Dan do. (Them apostrophes be rough though)
So you've beat cancer? Because that's amazing that you can get through anything with the right kind of help. 😁
Dan: I have many thoughts.
Dan:
Brandon: That was 2. That was 2 thoughts.
Dan: Grade me on a scale...
"Gym time is writing time"
What time isn't your writing time?
Sabaton!!! I clapped so loud when i heard that!
"Hello, my name is Dan Yawns I'll be your yawns for the evening"
*holds out hand in the air while smiling but nobody shakes it*
I never expected to get music recommendations from one of my favorite authors but WOW... Two Steps From Hell is awesome! Thanks for that Brandon. I had to pause the podcast to check them out and I'm glad I did.
On CZcams a few people have mixed two steps with lord of the rings battle scenes which is prettty epic.
"Loading Content" would be a great name too
Did marching band and concert band through high school and college. Later, I worked in an office where they did not understand that I just can't get work done with music playing in the background because I spent nearly a decade training myself to memorize and pay attention music.
I'm so glad that I'm not alone in having my writing music completely take over the music I listen to period. I haven't listened to country in ages because it is NOT conducive to writing
I fully support the perpetuation of Brandon's Journey cover band theory.
Eyyyyy Dan with the perfect music taste. Truly a man of culture!
I think the Weird All song that was mention was "Mission Statement", a parody of the music from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young?
Thank you! That's got to be it.
Brandon, you should try NOFX for punk. The melodies are so good that I bet you'd dig it. Try the album So Long and Thanks For All the Shoes!
Brandon, I want you to know that I loved you since the moment I picked up twok.
But you publicly saying that tsfh-genre is your favourite genre of music, has just taken my appreciation of your entire person to a whole new level.
tsfh is just absolutely gorgeous.
This discussion of country. Literally shaking my head and laughing at the same time.
Okay, Brandon, if you like Sabaton, I highly recommend trying Blind Guardian (they have many songs based on Wheel of Time!! And Lord of the Rings, including an entire album for the Silmarillion. Let's just say they are the reason I love metal...😁) or Orden Ogan or Arktida (A Russian symphonic metal band, so no need to worry about distracting lyrics. Also, Slavic metal just...hits different). AMAZING symphonic metal, all vastly different but just brilliant. Also clean vocals; I assume you're not a fan of screaming or growling if you don't like more intense punk.
Didn't Blind Guardian release a song that Hansi claimed was inspired by Sanderson's work called Violent Shadows?
I have a friend that plans on sharing a playlist with Brandon of songs that reminds them of their favorite characters/books.
I personally think the song “Let Me Carve Your Way” from the video game Guilty Gear: Strive fits pretty well with Elantris, specifically with Raoden and his entire problem haha. Also good to know that Dan knows about Ok-Go
If I were going to start writing fantasy, Is probably be listening to these World of Warcraft scores.
the first minute is amazing, love every episode but wow, these first few minutes this week love it!
Wonderful intro, you guys have truly outdone yourself.
Totally unrelated but hearing Dan mentioning Angel near the end, one of my favourite shows ever, just made my whole day. An episode where they talk about supernatural shows like Angel and Buffy would be so cool!
I really hope you release all your spoiler thoughts on the WoT show when it comes out, I know all of us would love to see your take!
There's a World of Tanks show coming out?
@@hudibrad I honestly don't know if you're joking, lmao!
Could certainly save me watching the episodes! 🤣
I switched to CZcams Music from Spotify because my likes often include covers and the like that are created for CZcams and not frequently uploaded to Spotify
Interesting to hear that brandon listens to music of one genre when writing because I have a playlist of of similarly theme music to me when I write, but I let the music influence the scenes I write.
I love a modular synth CZcamsr called State Azure's livestreams for writing. It's kind of spacey, drifting ambient that works really well for setting a Sci-fi mood.
I have so many tabs of their music recommendations open now
Guessing the soundtrack for "The Reckoners" would be mostly Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog.
🤣
Dan Yon's *just before the podcast starts* is my favorite show
Olivia Rodrigo is really good. Started because I love her story of jump starting her own career, stayed because Deja Vu has so many great lyrics.
If you like big orchestral scoring with rock bands, check out Silverchair! Their albums Neon Ballroom, Diorama, and Young Modern Station are super amazing and fit into that genre.
This podcast is really helping me get through a really crappy week in quarantine, so thank you for putting these out into the world!
Journey is the Dread Pirate Roberts of music.
You probably already know this one but ...
Blind Guardian - Wheel of Time
10 minute symphonic metal song about the book series
For a fellow blind guardian fan, you can expect at least one song about Stormlight on the next album! :D
Tempest's soundtrack for Wheel of Time is pretty good, too.
One of my coworkers introduced me to Sabaton and other European metal bands, I love it they are great! A band that I found recently that has a different kind of retro sound is Des Rocs, and I thought of their song "Used to the Darkness" when Brandon said he doesn't do daytime so I recommend that one for him :) Other random music I found recently (as I have decided to stop listening to the radio because they play the same music over and over and it is annoying) is anime rap/nerdcore music! It is actually really good, I thought that I didn't like rap but I just don't like popularized/gangster rap I guess. A couple of my favorite are Rustage (rapper) and Divide Music (one man rock/metal band). And Rustage actually has a rap he did (on his 2nd CZcams channel) about Mistborn
I love TSFH and was thrilled to find out you listen to them while writing my favorite books
Agreed! Thomas Bergersen is the best!
Yani is timeless. Good taist.
if Brandon (or anyone reading this, for that matter!) enjoys country with that rock edge, might I suggest Songs: Ohia's "Magnolia Electric Co." album? it's gloomy alt-country where you've got the twang you'd expect, but with a full band and a harder, distinctly Black Sabbath-y edge. Farewell Transmission in particular is a favourite song of mine! fantastic album cover, too
Oooh I love David Arkenstone. And I was into new age as well as metal when I was a teen.
"That Canadian Guy" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I kept waiting for the Nightcore callout, which is the most hilarious musical perversion of genre I occasionally enjoy.
This makes me so happy that Brandon likes Two Steps from Hell and Thomas Bergersen. They are my favorite as well in the genre of Cinematic Orchestra. ❤️👍🏻
There's a cool blues arrangement of Gangnam Style.
"Music with words"
I'm sure someone made a word for it
If you are into the English language. Similes, metaphors, homophones, alliterations, rhyming entire sentences, entire songs with double meanings, bending words then definitely check out Eminem's catalogue.
I love that you guys are screwed and have the keep the intentionally blank name 😂
I listened to a lot of Garage Inc while playing Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It really brings me back to that time in my life. I also relate Nirvana and Green Day heavily to playing MTG around a plastic table in my parents' old basement with my brother's friends.
Oooh, podcast name: Total Tangent
Intro was almost as good as the prologue to Way of Kings.
Which one?
Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar, wore white on the day he was to kill a king.
Every song I listen to inspires my writing and I use it as a title in my chapters. “Lift a sail” by Yellow card is one of my favorite.
Yes to listening to metal - woohoo! Got the 30th anniversary box of the Black album (Metallica has always been my favorite) for my bday. When I write, I can't do music with words, as well. I do new age or, on CZcams, put on instrumental playlists - like most emotional, dark, etc. - like Two Steps From Hell. I get great visuals in my head listening to them. :)
YES! I haven't read books from either but this podcast is so chill.
Dude you gotta get on that
How did you find Bran Dan if you haven't read their books, our of curiosity?
They keep saying " I have many thoughts " and I keep hearing " I have many thots' and I can't stop laughing every time they repeat themselves
That intro is my favorite
2:15 I am a Programmer. I can listen to any music while programming IF it has the same beat as my typing. Anything else doesnt work, vocals or not.
IDK what it is, but Im all into metal and punk rock and all the harder music choices, but I enjoy foreign pop music.
Adoooonalsiiiiium
Guys. After the Olivia Rodrigo discussion, I need an All Too Well 10 minute version analysis. What do you think of artists in any medium going back and adding to/changing their previously published art? Dan, don't fail me pleeaasee
Edit: whooaaaaaa disagree with everyone hating Taylor hahaha
I am very much the opposite of most writers that I've talked to about music. I have a hard time focusing on my writing in silence, it's easier to write when I have music to listen to, and I can write while listening to music that has lyrics, no problem. Music that all sounds really samey I can't stand, I need there to be some amount of variety. I think maybe it's just my ADHD brain needing the extra stimulation to focus, because that's an interesting thing I've learned, not enough stimulation and too much stimulation are both an issue for people with ADHD, so if one can create the right balance it becomes easier to focus. It's the reason why I listen to podcasts and solve puzzles at the same time, and why I had to doodle while in classes.
See the thing about Country Music is that, as a genre, it’s just as bad as fantasy for being hard to pin down exactly what it is. You got everything in there, twang-twang, epic love ballads, folk music, novelty songs, rock, pop etc. Although I like most of it, country has the worst tearjerkers ever (ref: Greatest Man by Reba) so I don’t listen to it much anymore.
Maybe that’s a sign that neither country nor fantasy are actually genres at all.
You guys know nightwish?
That got a thumbs up for the intro.
loved the "loading content" thing
The most famous country singer is clearly Johnny Cash.
Omg!! I always mix up journey and foreigner!
drivers license I now know the name of that song that I despised for months last year as it was played on the radio of months 8 to 10 times during my shift
Great intro.
Also, if you guys want some rock and metal inspired K-pop, try out Dreamcatcher, especially their songs Sahara, Break the Wall, and their Eclipse album.
They release instrumental versions of a lot of their songs, as well as Japanese versions, so you can have Kpop without having to worry about being distracted by lyrics.
I frequently listen to Lofi Girl for writing as it’s comfortable background noise.
Brandon and I were talking about our like of that channel during the signing last night. So chill, so good.
Hey, Journey cover band before Destination! Anyways love the podcast
You should try out Hiroyuki Sawano's music.
Everyone should
I really, really love the Dan Yawns Before the Podcast Podcast!
I love listening to these conversations.
Music, music. I hate Hotel California. College can really ruin music. But, on my own, I just dislike Opera and improv jazz. 🤮
I met Steve Perry when I was 16, and he was a real jerk. But as of 1987, they did exist. 🤣
Olivia Rodrigo's music is actually just good. I have no kids or teen influences, so when I like music, I just like it. She's kind of amazing at breakup songs.
I'd love for you guys to try Great Big Sea. They're no longer together as a group, but so much great music. Especially the Newfoundland-based stuff.
Also... Dude. "That Canadian kid." 🤣 Justin Bieber had married into a really good artist. His collabs are fantastic. Ed Sheeran is a little like Midas in the music world.
You two make me laugh, think, and just relax.
Also Garth Brooks is one of the best selling artists of all time, not just in country. If argue Willie Nelson is more famous... Modern Country is barely Country, honestly. They've started incorporating rap and minor keys, though, which actually do some great things for Country music. But when I was younger, I used to go line dancing, and we'd be doing dances to Kids and ACDC as well as current country of the time. 😁
Current book's themes are an OP and an ED. OP is Savior by Rise Against and the ED is Falling for the First Time by Barenaked Ladies.
@Dan Wells You should check out Rok Nardin and Secession Studios. They do a lot of the cinematic soundtrack style music but they do a lot more of the eeire/horror style in particular
I listen primarily to my OST and Mashup CZcams playlists on shuffle
ES Posthumus! Trippy.
The number one selling country artist is Garth Brooks, but the king of country is George Strait.
What about Bad Religion, or No-FX, Brandon? Are they too punk?
Brandon taste in music is great! 🤘
What song do Radiants like listening to on long road trips?
- Don’t Stop Believing! It’s always Journey before Destination.
* Piggybacking off of Joao Pedro Teuber Carvalho below.
My own experience when it comes to music while I write is rather cursed. I don't like making playlist and I love chaos, so my only "playlist" so to speak is just ≈10,000 songs (all unique, I check for that) that I put on shuffle. From *VeggieTales* to *Hamilton* to *Sabaton* to jazz video game covers by *Insaneintherain* I just let them go and experience them. Everyone I tell this finds it horrifying, and now there's context to post the comment here. :)
Where can we find those Sanderson playlists?
Here is one: open.spotify.com/playlist/1tvh6uN1GpajKmwr6Clz2h
George Strait is probably the top country guy
Leaving a comment
Brandon likes Sabaton? Can he be more perfect?
For real, though, I almost spit out my food when I heard that. I was not ready for him to actually like the things I like.
We even listened to one of their albums last night during the signing. Super good!
AND THINGS LIKE THAT
How do you guys feel about They Might Be Giants?
You really should listen to Concerto for Group and Orchestra by Pink Floyd!
There are no folk songs better than Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Gurthrie. And I'm not just saying that because its almost thanksgiving.
Garth Brooks and Shania Twain have probably sold the most albums but come on, Johnny Cash is the most famous.
Brandon and Dan Don't Know Much About Music...
(YAWN!)
How's that, Ben?
Me: 👍
Punk is a guilty pleasure to me, because of the Tony Hawk games. I played those games to death. It's a giant part of my childhood.
why guilty?
Theirs nothing like the thoght of never exiting your house, dying then going to heaven. Sounds like a nice life. This world is madness, your not mising anything, Dream life. ☺
Where can we find the spotify playlist? What name is it under. Thanks
what do i search to find his playlists on spotify?
This should work. open.spotify.com/playlist/3GfAiWLeIk3zrLaqtfL3ah?si=Vjl3fn7FQ1y8eODuo93vKw&
@@BrandSanderson thank you so much!
I need links to the wax and Wayne playlist!
Please tell me Dead But Rising by Volbeat is a Kaladin song.
Starhawk game soundtrack could fit wax and wayne
...okay Dawn Yawns > Intentionally Blank
5:51 what name does he say here? hard to tell? hidden something?
Hidden Citizens.
They need to listen to baby metal
