Alternate dimension Brandon: Coding more lines in a day than anyone else does in a year. So, pretty much same as what we have now, but instead of the Stormlight Archive, we have a super computer AI ruling over us.

This is years old and I know no one will read this comment, but Sanderson talking about writing a detective story as his final English essay and Wells talking about his overlong Persuasion paper sparked a very fond memory for me. When I want back to university as an adult, I took a medieval history course. We had four papers, one on a specific topic and three on anything we wanted and in any format we wanted so long as it talked about issues we covered or were in the book about each of the three commonly accepted medieval periods. Some people submitted poems. Some people submitted standard essays. I submitted ~60 page drafts of stage plays. The first time we were in class after submitting the first of them, she said, "I haven't finished grading everyone's papers yet, that should be done by Monday." Not kidding, this look of stress fell on her and she turned to me, "Walt, yours..." And I'm just like, "I'm sorry!" And she says, "It's fine. It'll just take me a while to read it." This poor woman was a graduate student working on her doctorate as she taught the class, and I gave her three of these throughout the year. I am so sorry. On top of that, they were mostly terrible.

Brandon Sanderson just unlocked a memory. I was in college, taking a political science course in which we were to write a term paper comparing and contrasting the political philosophies of Locke, Hobbes, Rosseau, and Marx. I chose to write it as a story somewhat inspired by the old Rod Serling Twilight Zone (somehow, these four men and I showed up at this cottage to have a meal and dinner conversation). I barely managed to contain within the required max page length (go beyond, your extra pages will not be read). There may have been some margin manipulation involved.
Well, I get into class on the day it's due, and I see classmates have their papers with all these neatly sectioned off with section headers. I started to panic, but it was too late to go back now. Then the papers are returned with grades, and as the prof is handing them back, he is talking about how horrible most of the papers were, and that most people failed. I grew more and more nervous.
It turned out, I blew the curve. I was the only one in the class (of over 100) who got an A. I don't know if it was the fact that the paper was written so differently and entertained the prof or if it was that the presentation showed the comparisons/contrasts better than simply presenting dueling quotes of text.

I think Brandon is kind of wrong here in thinking it wouldn't have been picked up. Sure Roshar is vary different from all the other settings, but at the time so was Eberron. They were looking for new and different when they made the contest. So it's possible that it would have been picked up by Wizards.

Some of my favourite fiction that I've read over the past few years has come out of that WotC ad budget fiction. The _Brimstone Angels_ series, by Erin M Evans, started as part of the more traditional D&D Forgotten Realms novel line, but book 3 of the 6 book series was part of their _"The Sundering"_ series (other books in _The Sundering_ included ones starring Drizzt and Elminster, the two main headline characters), which came out as a tie-in to advertise the release of 5th edition D&D. And that series has has become among my favourite fantasy series of all time.
Only small correction is that Brandon seems to have the timeline a bit wrong. This all happened way back in like 2013. Three or four years ago WotC actually *cancelled* their entire novel line-up, going _back_ to that "Drizzt and Elminster only" mode, from which they still have not recovered. In fact, with the exception of the last two Brimstone Angels novels, there hasn't been a single Forgotten Realms novel released since 2015 that wasn't by R.A. Salvatore or Ed Greenwood.

    • @melissajill6174

Good question! I remember my high school days ... we'd spend six weeks reading and dissecting a novel (some of the ones I remember--Ivanhoe, A Tale of Two Cities, and The Count of Monte Cristo). My freshman year, my English teacher also taught French and I felt like she was picking these books to show off the pronunciation of the French names (which, being in the midwestern US was kind of hard). Analysis was exhaustive and exhausting ... and totally missed the point. Fortunately, I'd taught myself to speed read and knew how things were going to go down when we were handed out The Count of Monte Cristo the Friday before we were supposed to start ... I read the whole thing in the weekend before we started. If I had had to rely on what I learned in class, I would not know that revenge had anything to do with the story.
