- Directed by: Maryam Keshavarz
Screenplay by: Maryam Keshavarz
Starring: Layla Mohammadi, Niousha Noor, Kamand Shafieisabet, Bijan Daneshmand, Bella Warda, Chiara Stella, Tom Byrne, Shervin Alenabi
Coming from two countries at odds with each other, Iranian-American Leila (Layla Mohammadi) strives to find balance and embrace her opposing cultures, while boldly challenging the labels society is so quick to project upon her. When her family reunites in New York City for her father’s heart transplant, Leila navigates her relationships at arm’s length in an effort to keep her “real” life separate from her family life. However, when her secret is unceremoniously revealed, so are the distinct parallels between her life and that of her mother Shireen (Niousha Noor). Punctuated by a bright color palette, snappy comedic relief, and vibrant dance numbers, “The Persian Version” delivers an honest portrayal of a woman who remains unapologetically herself, blended seamlessly into a heartfelt story about family, belonging, and the undeniable influence of pop music.
Winning both the Audience Award and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, writer-director-producer Maryam Keshavarz delivers a universal and timely story of the Iranian and the Iranian-American experience.

I didn’t know this was on Netflix wtf
Not sure how many realize this, but to have queer lead Persian characters is kind of a big deal. You'd never see this movie inside of Iran, tho.
in 1970s youtube find famous queer show from inside Iran do you want a link?
Yup i would love that. Especially lesbian @fem9078
Iranians live all over the world. Haven’t seen this film yet but yes it’s clearly a version of Persian American life and reality - it’s not a film about Iranian life in Iran. Kinda obvious not sure how that’s not abundantly clear.
Ok, teaching him Shut Up instead of GoodBye really made laugh. Especially since I know Farsi
If your identity is not Persian so why you don’t shut your mouth?
Please everyone! No negative comment. Probably you haven’t gone through that in the US! 😅😅😅
That was great movie specially for Iranian women who have been on box for 45 years,,,,,, we are iranian persian version and still being proud of it, with religion or not with we have amazing identity,, that will always bringing us to top, Just because we have Pahlavi Empire ❤❤❤❤❤
Disrespecting a religious figure and ideology in the name of comedy should be not be tolerated. Any cultural difference can be a subject to your filmmaking creative Liberty, but mocking a religion can't be one ! Netflix and other platforms must take it down !

Nothing about this is Persian. This a pure Western secular way of life.
The way progressive Iranians want to live. Islam destroyed your country

Ofcourse 💯
Fu,,,,ck islam now what?😊
Kinda reminds me of big fat Greek wedding
Difference is Greeks are more emotional.
Persians are more cunning, tactical.
That needs to be shown imo in future movies about this community. Iran has a "Chess player" / "Poker player" culture that isn't exactly common in the world.
all the radical islamist bots in the comments
i like how it took about half way through for me to figure out who the main character was
This trailer makes the movie seem more comedic than it is. It's more of a slightly funny family drama/medical drama rather than a slightly dramatic comedy movie. Be prepared to tear up often rather than laugh. A lot of audio is strangely cut off or added in post.. some subplots/substories are never followed up with like what happened with Leila's script-writing that introduced her mom's story or where's Vahid at the end. Does Vahid know the truth? The trailer introduces the brothers but we barely see anything about the brothers in the movie. Colorful visuals and everyone (especially Shireen's) makeup was done amazingly well. Some jokes were good, sometimes seemed like they should've been memes but ended up in the movie. This movie wasn't really bad for me but it was quite a mess.
This movie is insulting imam e zamana so we should boycott it!!
Yess let's begin
Dahaneto beband!
You are disrespecting a religious figure and ideology and call it funny ? Unacceptable! Use your Cultural differences as movie plots, not people's belief ! I urge Netflix and other platforms to take it down ASAP !
True I guess their brains just stops right there about disrespecting religions and making false conceptions and nothing else like seriously have u guys run out of ideas so u will start attacking peoples beliefs such an idiotic mindset only a true brainless American can have
Zip it,,,, Why are you Radicalization so much and being everywhere,,,, leave us alone can you understand?????? For many years we respected you and see no feedback from your side!!!
Now just with a single thing you attack us?
We don’t need god we don’t need religion ok? Respectfully we dont need that religion heaven are not built for us ok? So congratulations all the best like heaven god religion is just for you , but please don’t say what is can not we do shiiit

Good movie wish it had more of the mens pov
Terrible. They spread misinformation about imam Zaman (an Islamic holy figure) and tried to ruin his image. They put a bad image on other Islamic names as well. This is very much designed by America to fight Islam per usual. Nothing about it is Persian and it’s nothing but pure undercover disrespect.
I totally agree with u this is nothing about Iranian culture the Americans just want to spread hate between Muslims. It's literally in their blood line to spread misconception like they are spreading now about Palestine
I totally agree with you this is nothing about Iranian culture. The Americans just want to spread hate between Muslims as they usually do like they are doing rn with Palestine through spreading misconceptions about hamas aswell

@@WaniaEshal-ro3ps can you specify the time .
I heard that it's based on the director's life as a Persian.
I saw this at Sundance and I was really moved by it, it’s better than this trailer makes it appear.
I appreciate this. This gives me optimism for this honestly, because I feel like this preview makes it come off a bit vain and shallow and self-absorbed, like so much of American entertainment now.
I thought the trailer was great- I wanna see it!

Very pathetic. I have not watched the movie not I am planning to do so. I will make sure people in my circle don't watch it but also leave a review. The reason I am writing a review is particularly mocking the belief in Imam Mehdi a.s with various insulted description. The belief is universal among Muslim and the depiction in movie is false and unacceptable. What in the world gives right to humiliate other's beliefs by associating false facts. If this is a way to make it popular on social media sites then its pathetic and deplorable.
Blatant lies and disrespect towards a religious figure and ideology in the name of cultural comedy is unacceptable. Persian culture might be something to use as a comedy feature, but RELIGION CAN'T Be DISRESPECTED ! NETFLIX HAS TO BRING IT DOWN, ALONG WITH OTHER PLATFORMS !
Agreed agreed 💯💯
CRY they're just revealing the reality of iranians living post 1980
Why can't religion be disrespected? Because you said so? It's just one more human belief, who gives a shit.
as a persian this movie is bullshit
This movie should be removed from everywhere as this movie insults the religion of Islam (Shias) and openly lies about their religious beliefs.
You are disrespecting the religious faith and presenting the people's believe in a comedy scenes. Firstly to started to disrespect the jesus and now you are making fun of Muslim's believe . You should stop mocking the religious personalities of Islam .

Nothing Iranian in there, mostly Moroccan actors, and some scenes are shot there. The voice-over doesn't sound Tehranian but more like a villager. Just so you know, we don't think Imam Zaman turns into an animal or that we ask him for help directly we pray to God by saying dear ALLAH help us for the sake of your Prophet or the for the sake of Al mahdi , mentioning Imam Zaman or Prophet Muhammad peace be upon them . But hey, it's Hollywood, maybe trying to stir up Sunni Shia differences
We do not say "al mahdi" that's Arabic. Also, this is only relatable to Iranians who have mostly secular and liberal communities. If you're religious and hella conservative, this film is not for you
The director is persian/iranian. The film is semi autobiographical. I'm pretty sure she knows the religion and culture of persians. 🤷♂️
@@Lars1224 But, since it is backed up by non-Iranians it does not get almost anything right regarding Iran in this movie...
@@javadbahram795 the director who is also the writer is Iranian-American. She did this film from the POV of an iranian/american in NYC where she grew up... it is set in America not Iran. Difference.
@@Lars1224 Okay then, but, since the producers are intentionally and indirectly trying to represent the entire Iranian people(they clearly kept on generalizing everything) in this movie... we have to address our concern over it.
As you Europeans hardly know anything about Iran and will believe everything in this movie, despite being mindless entertainment to you, it still will have its effects on you...
Boycott ❌
When the borders are made up of non-penetrated walls and dispersing misinformation conquers our world, movies like this may demonstrate how an isolated culture can be fruitful and vibrant.
This is the most successful community in the US.
This is the movie they get? Not good enough.
Anyways. I'll watch it and then judge.
Iranians deserve better treatment in the media. They are impressive.
Hubris remark.. there isn’t a “Persia-Town” in every major city. This is terrible representation of culturally diverse group of a people.
Iranians will get better representation in the media when they aren’t gossiping about eachother. The culture spends WAYYY too much time discussing people and not ideas. Mix that in with CIA back coups, then installing the last Shah and you get people who can’t even agree on the documented, declassified, and un-redacted story of how their people have been exploited since 1908 with William Knox via. BP (formerly Anglo-Iranian Oil Company).
The best leader they had was Mossadge and America got rid of him, just like Gaddafi. Many Iranians have so much infighting because they love the Vanity of The Shah and do not like their current leader, they won’t acknowledge their past leaders. It’s a cycle and a battle between Iranians in Iran vs Exiled Iranians ..until that is fixed with unity behind the truth of the story of western imperialism divide and conquer, not sure you expect better reflection in the media.
There is too much vested interest in division and keep ethnic groups in “The Oppression Olympics”, using a killing to be mass marketed by media companies and their shareholders to keep you all fighting. Whilst the worlds “stake-holders” and NGO’s (WEF) pass policies on your behalf in the Divided States.
In Los Angeles and New York there is. They sort of run LA in many ways.
You need to get out more.@@nicojames8624
This is western trash propaganda
This is just one individual’s story. It may lead to more from other Americans of Persian descent.
@@nicojames8624 they’re not really divided in terms of political ideology. Most Iranians agree that the current regime is a problem. Most think Shah wasn’t better but the lesser of two evils. All in all unfortunately we’re talking about government corruption.
چرت و پرت
واقن!!!
Gross film, what an embarrassment for Iranians
There’s a scene in the movie in which an Islamic figure, by the name of Imam Zaman, was humiliated and the feelings of Shia Muslims were hurt in the guise of cheap comedy. Learn to narrate stories without crossing boundaries and know how to practice basic manners and show respect towards fellow humans, regardless of their faith. Hollywood has been producing low quality movies and it has just become a propaganda machine now. Just because US and Iran don’t get along, does’t mean that the filmmakers have gotten the license to stoop so low, even if the filmmakers are Iranian nationals or ex-pats. Filmmaking and storytelling such cheap tactics. Highly disappointed!

So, Persian women are good at business and they have large families.
Shame on the writers, directors, producers, actors, and everyone involved in making this film and targeting and defaming a specific religious sect.
This movie mocks, disrespects, lies about and disregards a fundamental principle of Islamic belief which is the arrival of Imam Mehdi (AJTF) who is the messiah who will bring peace and harmony to this world Insh'Allah.
No matter which religion you belong to or which community you belong to, disrespecting any religions sacred beliefs is an immoral and highly disingenuous thing to do and such things should never be supported as they first of all hurt the feelings of millions of people and also creates clashes between people and disrupts the peace of a society overall.
They literally just cross the limits, unacceptable, and truly disgusting how these low_lifers can just stick their dirty legs into our deen and aqeedat .
I would respectfully ask everyone reading this review to please boycott from watching this film and also boycott and criticize platforms streaming or spreading the reach of this film.
