    The story of his dismantling of the Canadian nuclear reactor is the stuff of legend. Carter was one of the few engineers in the world qualified to lead the project. Learning that a worker could remain in the reactor room for only 90 seconds, Carter developed a plan which cycled workers through the reactor room as they completed the project safely, 90 seconds at a time. That must have been great, meeting him at the book signing. Also, what you said about Amy Carter, getting letters from your class is significant, as she was a student in a regular Washington DC public school. President Clinton, and President Obama, the only two other presidents since Jimmy Carter to have school age children while they were in office, sent their children to private schools. Even when Jimmy Carter was in office, while I thought him sending Amy to public school was commendable, I think she might have been more comfortable in a private school setting. when you mention carter to a Republican, though, it's always "but what about the gas lines!"
      The 'gas lines' (it was just the Memorial Day week in '79) was caused by a prolonged - and unprecedented - shutdown at the Amerada-Hess Virgin Islands refinery - then the largest in the free world.
      Since Hess distributed to multiple chains (besides its own), it led to a supply domino effect.
      George H.W. Bush - whom Hess supported (as he had backed Nixon in '72) - threw his hat in the ring *that same week* .

    Jimmy Carter negotiated the release of the hostages, start to finish. The hostage takers waited until Ronald Reagan's inauguration for the release, so that Reagan would receive credit for it. Just to thumb their nose at Carter, who came out on top. And Reagan did take credit for it, although he did nothing. Carter's staff wanted him to clarify who really negotiated the deal, but Carter said the hostages are all home safe, and that's all that matters. That's the kind of man he is.
    Also, being a nuclear physicist by training helped him to know exactly what questions to ask and actions to be taken in the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant meltdown.
    The myth that he was a soft, ineffective president was promulgated by the Republican party, to win elections. Their M.O. is to turn their opponent's strengths against them, as we saw with the swift boating of John Kerry.
    We need incredibly intelligent, empathetic public servants like Carter, not ill-equipped, cruel megalomaniacs like Reagan, little Bush, and especially Trump.

    Carter was under rated. When he said we should strive for American cars to get an average of 35 MPG, he was laughed at. The oil industry and Detroit literally said "cars get 10mpg, and that's it, end of story". Carter put solar panels on the White House and Regan took them down. He was ethical and he tried to do the right thing.

    I think President Carter's longevity speaks for itself, mind body connection. His military service, honorable. As a president, no significant baggage or scandal, and no accusations of sexual improprieties. President Carter has conducted himself as a diplomat, and with decorum. He was true to his faith, taught Sunday School. President Carter was a humanitarian, establishing Habitat for Humanity, and even participated in the construction of these homes. Thank you, for being such a positive role model for our youth. May you and your family continue to be in peace.

    I always thought that Jimmy Carter got a bad rap. Just because he was a moral president, people viewed him as weak. To his credit, he took a "buck stops here" attitude to that disastrous rescue attempt in Iran, when almost all other recent presidents would have blamed the fiasco on the military leaders who were actually responsible. I think history will eventually remember him as one of the greatest presidents in American history.

    Carter had the right analysis;
    Continued US dependency of oil would lead to US military involvement in the middle-east.
    And ever increasing consumption would destroy the environment.
    Unfortunately Reagans message was more uplifting: The is plenty of oil. Consume away.

    I was nine during the 1980 election, and I remember my parents repeatedly calling President Carter "that peanut farmer" ~ with swear words attached. My first bit of political consciousness was an internal recognition that they were out of bounds. I remember thinking, if my parents are wrong in their ungenerous attitude, maybe they're wrong about other things. It gave me space to think independently. I've always admired President Carter, even back then, I suppose! I think he will be hearing "Well done, my good and faithful servant. "🙏

      Wrong? No, Carter was a bad president, his policies destroyed many families. His stagflation pushed many Americans into poverty. Luckily, Reagan reversed the trend of expanding poverty and actually shrunk poverty. I remember a Democrat saying "my party loves the poor", and thinking, yeah, that's why you're creating so many new poor people. Your parents were more sophisticated than you. LOL, I think you're still naive 50 years later!
