Michael's backing vocals pushed this song to the top.
Michael i believe has writer credits for this song, but there didnt want he to sing this song.
You mean the chorus vocals?
@@paulhall4572 I'm old enough to remember this, he couldnt and didnt want to put his name on this, as some of the vocals, as Michaels record company threatened to sue him, as Rockwell was on a different label
Kennedy Gordy, aka Rockwell, and Michael Jackson grew up together and were friends. He asked Mike to sing the hook and he said absolutely. Jermaine is also singing the background.
Kennedy wouldn’t be related to Barry Gordy would he?
@@thewiseoldherper7047 Yes, he is Berry's son.
@@caperboy1169 Rockwell wrote the song
@@caperboy1169 Tito wrote it
Rockwell originally sang background with Michael, but they ended up just keeping Michael’s vocals.
Morris Day remade this for the Eddie Murphy movie "The Haunted Mansion". That is Michael Jackson singing the chorus and Jermaine is on background vocals. At the time, Jermaine was married to Rockwell's sister Hazel Gordy. Rockwell had another Top 10 hit on the R&B chart called "Obscene Phone Caller", which is on the same album as this track.
I totally forgot about that in the movie! Thx for reminding me 💙
I'm glad I read your comment cause you pretty much nailed it everything I was gonna say
Oh shit. I had no idea that Rockwell was Berry Gordy's son. That's crazy.
Michael did background vocals, while Jermaine did additional vocals.
@@julieford8788 nobody's checking for Morris Day
Michael Jackson singing the chorus!!!! Love this song!!!
...which, without him, nobody would've probably ever heard this song.
@@NoName-fx9zi which is is sad since it’s such a banger
And he refused to take any credit so his friend could get the recognition
Rockwell is Berry Gordy’s (Motown founder) son. And yep that’s Michael Jackson singing the chorus. Great 80s song.
"did you hear that "hee hee" at the end?". case closed! hahahahaha love it
Rockwell was a one hit wonder. And Michael Jackson singing the chorus is what makes it good lol
Everything that Michael tushes turn to gold.
Im surprised that it took so long for Michael Jackson. His voice is so Iconic and he sounds like no one else! Rockwell had him and his brother Jermaine sing background vocals for this song.
Rockwell was the son of Motown legend Barry Gordy. MJ used to be on Motown and knew Rockwell growing up.
I always thought MJ sang this song and wife said nope sorry its not MJ, glad to know MJ was singing the chorus❤
"Knife" is another great song by Rockwell
This is such a fun song! Michael Jackson really added the magic.
Funny story:
My neighbor played this super loud as my brother walked by their house after school when I wasn't with him. It freaked him out, & it was hilarious 😂
😆
Michael Jackson indeed, along with Jermaine Jackson during the chorus. This was your typical 80s type of pop song with all the latest 80s keyboard sounds.
Ain’t nobody watching you, Rockwell!
Rockwell
Rockwell's debut single release, the song features guest vocals by brothers Michael Jackson (in the chorus) and Jermaine Jackson (additional backing vocals).
Motown founder, Berry Gordy's son.....and Michael Jackson is singing the hook and background vocals
👏👏👏
Exactly
U will love song centepead by mj sister rebbie Jackson produce by mj
…because Rockwell could’t sing worth a crap…
That was indeed Michael, along with Jermaine, Jackson! They were long time friends of the singer. And yes, you've probably heard this song in Halloween commercials, as it's fun spooky, not scary. If you liked this song (and I don't know anyone who doesn't), you should check out "Amadeus" by Falco. Another very unique sound and singer.
Rock Me Amadeus is one of my favorite songs I was listening to it yesterday on repeat
"Somebody's Watching Me" is a song recorded by American singer Rockwell, released by the Motown label in 1984, as the lead single from his debut studio album of the same name. Rockwell's debut single release, the song features guest vocals by brothers Michael Jackson (in the chorus) and Jermaine Jackson (additional backing vocals).
I'm getting George Orwell vibes with this song now.
I love it, Amber! You nailed. I’m proud of us Michael Jackson fans. We know his voice! I love this song. It’s been everywhere. Commercials, TV, Movies, Skateboarding videos, probably video games.
We all went crazy 🤪 for this, when it 1st came out 1984.. Yes Amber , its definitely MJ singing the chorus. ❤🎵🎙
This song always makes me smile. It is so fun and I still love it
Rockwell was a one-hit-wonder! He is the son in Motown founder, Berry Gordy! Michael Jackson’s singing the hook so it was a guaranteed hit! ❤️❤️
Knife is another hit of Rockwell too Gina,in 1984 a hit here in Suriname.
One of the greatest one-hit wonders of all time!!
I always thought of this song as the anti-"Thriller" or campy-"Thriller". ❤️ Still randomly break out singing this one at silly times.
Between _This_ , "She Blinded Me With Science." and "Thriller" the 80s had some of the funnest novelty songs ever.
Even add “Rumors” to this list!
This song sounds like Thomas Dolby does it not?
Yes! re. "Rumors." (Susan & her camisole !)
and yeah, there _Is_ a bit of Dolby flavor to it.
Taco too, Puttin on the Ritz
What about all the Weird Al songs?
The instrument J's hearing sounds like a Keytar, which was immensely popular in the 80's. It was a smallish keyboard that was worn over the shoulder like a guitar (a keyboard guitar, or keytar.)
You nailed it Amber! That was Michael Jackson in the chorus!! Back before his eccentricities started to haunt his public image... A classic "creepy" 80's song that should be played at every Halloween party!! Oh and the video is genius!! I rarely liked 80's videos as so many them never matched how I "felt" the lyrics of the song portrayed (and lyrics were often included in cassette tapes as well as some DVD's later on). I'm glad you both rocked out and enjoyed this song!!
More like the media haunting his public image
Yea we should keep our kids out his bed..our fault!!!!
Plenty of evidence out there proving his innocence. But yes it’s much easier to believe established lies than doing an hour of research.
@@glamourisbest no lies spoken do your own research...everything I said he admitted too ...it's just not normal to sleep with other people kids is it .all I'm saying I love his music so chill
I’m always calm and chill. My point was regarding the narrative around his character. It’s one thing for him to say that and it’s another thing to assume he’s a sexual predator because of his statements ( which most people do) .
No harm or malice meant here. I truly hope you have a wonderful day!
Another good song and video from the MTV days!! This song kinda goes with Who Can It Be Now? ... Men At Work .
Everyone who heard this song upon it’s release knew it was Michael Jackson. Way to go Amber. Rockwell is Berry Gordy’s son. Berry Gordy of course was the founder of Motown Records. I don’t need to tell you the history and influence this man had on the music industry. The family definitely has an interesting history.
Rockwell (the paranoid one running around in the towel...LOL) is the son of Barry Gordy, who was the founder and head of Motown records. That's where the Jackson family connection comes in. Jermaine Jackson was once married to Mr Gordy's daughter and the family was once on the Motown record label. So Yep, Michael Jackson was singing on this song.
Tic Toc Challenge ! lol....
My 8yr old daughter spun me out, mimed Rockwell's Somebody's Watching Me !!
Old Breaking tune ‼️
That song reminds me of another favorite from the 80's.."Misled" by Kool & The Gang. I keep waiting for someone to react to it. Such a great groove!💙
Yes!! Misled is AWESOME!! That would be great to see J and Amber react to Misled!! 😎❤👍🙏
@RobSquadReactions
MISLED is not the most popular Kool and the Gang song, but it’s my favorite.
The album, Emergency, also has sentimental value to me… when I was about 11 or 12 years old, my family found ourselves without a house to live in and we lived with my grandparents for awhile. My grandfather bought me that cassette and enclosed a note to “stay kool in an emergency”. I wish I still had that note… I was too young at the time to know what it, and he, would mean later in life.
Mislead is a great song
YES!
Yup ! Suggested this one before myself. Looooved that song so much.
It's not every artist that can get their childhood best friend to do the hook on their song... and that childhood friend being the greatest music artist to bless radio and screen, Michael Jackson.
If you want another Rockwell song, "Peeping Tom" on his dad's "Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon" Soundtrack.
Yall should check out the Movie Berry Gody's "The Last Dragon" .. Bruce LeRoy & Sho'Nuff
Hilarious song!!! 80s music puts Amber in rare form.
she says she's a hippie, but nobody breaks out an 80s robot quite like Amber. 😁
@@dipsydoodle7988 agreed
80's music always puts me in a good mood
I always thought Rockwell sounded like Michael Jackson. Thanks to this comments section, now I know that it really IS Michael on the chorus. Thanks, guys. 🙂
Same here, my friend.
One of the best Halloween songs... this was always played at the Halloween discos with the ghostbusters theme and thriller...
Ahhhh... the era of early 80s break-dancing, parachute pants, and egregious amounts of men's hair products. Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" and Art of Noise's "Beat Box" are still the kings of that scene. You should do a reaction video to Art of Noise (a wholly underrated and uber-influential band).
Yes! Close to the Edit has such a strange unique video as well. Love Art of Noise!
Why did I think you did this one already. Your right Amber, MJ did sign in the background , and his hee hee laugh gives it away that it is him.
First time I remember hearing this song is in an H&R Block commercial. It talked about how if you use their competitors, you're leaving money on the table, then it showed a stack of cash with fake eyeballs "watching" the actors in the commercial with this song playing in the background.
Thank you for reacting to this gem of a song! Berry Gordy Sr. told Jr. that the song was not a hit. Rockwell took the song to his friends (the Jackson 5) and Michael sang the hook, Jermaine (Rockwell's then brother-in-law played the bass). Maybe Randy played the keyboards, and Tito played guitar...not sure about that...but Mike & Jermaine for sure contributed to the song. Rockwell is still proud of their efforts on this cut.
Rockwell is a son of Motown CEO Berry Gordy. At the time of the recording, Rockwell was estranged from his father and living with Ray Singleton, his father's ex-wife and the mother of his older half-brother, Kerry Gordy. Singleton served as executive producer on the project and would occasionally play some demo tracks to Berry. The elder Gordy was less than enthusiastic about Rockwell's music until he heard the single with Michael Jackson's familiar voice featuring prominently on background vocals.
It does sound really spooky…..plus he has a British accent… we thought it was hilarious
Actually I've always heard Michael did it as a favor for Barry
Only Michael does the backing vocals
@@andreadeamon6419 Jermaine sings background also “Oh Oh Oh”
@@andreadeamon6419 Jackson was contractually forced to sing on this crap.
Yep that was Michael, his brother Jermaine was married to Rockwell's sister. Rockwell is also Berry Gordy's son. { if what I am reading is correct}
What made this a hit was MJ doing back vocals& Rockwell is Barry. Gordy's (Motown mogul) son.
Ahh more 80's music video theatre. Such a fun time to be a part of. It's already been mentioned in comments, about MJ. Great reaction. :)
Yes, as others have said, it is Michael Jackson on the backing vocal part. Rockwell, was a Motown artist, and also Berry Gordy Jnr's son.
Rockwell brother n nephew are the group LMFAO who sang "party rock anthem" n "I'm sexy and I know it".
This song would not have been even half as successful without Michael's backing vocals.
Great ear, Amber! I was waiting for you to recognize Michael Jackson singing the chorus! When your dad is Berry Gordy, Jr., it's amazing who you can get as a back-up singer!
I remember watching this video when I was still young enough for this video to scare the crap out of me.lol it kinda still does. love the song! It was so unique ❤️ I can never get enough synths and other unique 80's beats
Finally getting to this one! Told you there were *two* surprises here! lol! Michael and Jermaine's vocals helped make this a hit.
Wife here...Wore this record out!!!...Jammed out to this in the eighties for real!!
Always loved this song and Micheal Jackson of course in the background of course you can't go wrong ❣️
When this came out we already loved MJ and his stuff, then this song came out and we were ya it MJ singing the part we all went OH it MJ AGAIN :)
Rockwell ( Kennedy William Gordy ) is the son of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr. and is is the older half brother of Redfoo (Stefan Kendal Gordy) and uncle of Skyblu (Skyler Austen Gordy) both of LMAFO
The part where he said Whose Watching Me Now----The IRS, he has another song called Taxman, it wasnt as big as a hit, but was on the same album, you can check it out if you like
OMG!! I've only every really heard this around Halloween. Haha. It goes on my playlist every year! Loved the reaction!!!
You can definitely tell that’s Michael Jackson doing the background vocals. It was used in some Geico ads
"Blue On Black" Kenny Wayne Shepherd. - Blues/Rock - Kid playing fantastic guitar in bars before he was old enough to smoke.
Rockwell is Barry Gordy’s son and that’s how he got Michael to sing back up on the song
Me watching the Rob Squad struggle to recognize MJ's voice.
Rockwell is a one-hit-wonder. This was only a hit because of Michael's vocals.
If it had been a shity song it probably it would'nt have been a hit even with MJ. So the catchy hook definitely made a difference!
Ok, now y’all have to listen to Oran “Juice” Jones - The Rain 🌧
Not sure how you could have lived on this earth and never heard this song. Glad you guys enjoyed it so much. Yes, Michael Jackson did the chorus on this song, he didn't want to get credit on it, so he could boost Rockwell's career. Michael was such an incredible person he did this selflessly, and made this song awesome.
Imagine being at the dance club, 3 or 4 drinks in, and this song comes on...memories!!
Yes! That is Micheal Jackson’s voice . He helped produce this song. 🙂🎶. Another good one for you to check is , Split Enz, I Got You
I Got You is one of my favorite 80s songs.
Must be a Kiwi
A song I haven't heard since the 1980s, Split Enz, History Repeats
Noooooo she'll be hooked for life!!
You two have to react to Funkadelic "One Nation Under A Groove" it was a serious party starter.
Without Jackson in the background this song would have never seen the light of day.
*LOL...I thought before the reaction began, of saying/writing; "you should play this at every Halloween Party!"*
I have 3 requests for your next female Friday, 1 Debbie Boone - you light up my life!! AWESOME song!! 2, Tammy wynette - Stand by your man and 3, for Dolly Parton getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Believe it or not, Dolly Parton - Stairway to Heaven!! You will LOVE them!!😀 Thanks for keeping the good music alive!!
This song always gave me Halloween vibes. Such a catchy hit. Thanks for reacting! Suggestion: Daryl Hall--Dreamtime. Jordan, this is played in a few GEICO commercials. This song is about paranoia.
One of the first MTV videos we saw when we first got our MTV! Weird...fun...cool all at the same time!
It is Michael J.
They had close relationship to Berry Gordy's (Motown founder) family. AKA Rockwell
Someone mentioned "Misled" by Kool and the Gang and I would add "Emergency" also by Kool and the Gang. You would love it. Funky, dance in your seats.
I love that song…I love Kool And The Gang
The main voice is Rockwell but get ready the person singing “I always feel like somebody’s watching me is AMBER YOU’RE RIGHT IT’S MICHAEL JACKSON!!! MIND BLOWN 🤯!!!’
It’s so true today then back then. Big brother is watching and listening
😂
It's lovely watching reactions from guys like you who have no idea about the track you're dipping into. Yeah, MJ did vocals on this track. It's a classic!
Great stuff. Couple other songs to do from this time and this genre (also MJ related) would be Torture and State of Shock done with his brothers, billing themselves as The Jacksons. Off the Victory album.
I’ve always loved this song since Michael Jackson is doing the chorus and I’m actually named after Michael Jackson in tribute to my oldest sister who died in a tragic train accident 3 months before I was born in October so my mind has always been stuck there and I gravitated to the dark stuff and she wanted me named after MJ
Obscene phone caller is a jam from Rockwell
The 80s were phenomenal. It was a time when they really explored their creativity
Toby Mac sampled the chorus on a cut on his first solo album in early 2000's but I feel like this has been played a lot at Halloween parties!
That's where I've heard it. I knew the chorus but had never heard the original. Glad you shared this.
Always been a great Halloween/ Haunted House song over here in the UK. We use this track along with others every year when we celebrate Halloween.
Great reaction
Holy crap I can't believe I forgot this one. Wow. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
Yes Mickey is in there and that is why this artist got a flash back on this.
It's such a fun creepy. Yes,MJ is what put this song on the charts. Rockit, Bernie Hancock, is another fun song ,video. Thanks for this.Smile
Thank both of you for giving me something to look forward to every day. Awesome Mothers Day pics Amber!! I have 3 Female Friday suggestions......#1 The Motels "Only the Lonely" #2 Til Tuesday " Voices Carry" #3 Scandal "the Warrior". All are 80s but definitely worth a listen
I wanted to say the same. The chorus or the second voice, that is definitely Michael Jackson.
no other artist dominated the 80s music scene like mj did! can you imagine every single time you turn on the radio you hear mj? and the commerical you're thinking of is geico :) they used a variation of this song.
Rockwell, was Berry Gordy's (founder of Motown) nephew.
Ah one of my old school favorites! Want another 80s song to check out? Give a listen to Biz Markie - Just A Friend (Official Video) and Slick Rick - Children's Story (Official Video)
One hit wonder, from Berry Gordy's kid.
The main reason this moved the needle was because Michael Jackson participated.
Or, the only reason.
Definitely not a one hit wonder but this was his biggest hit
Well the groovy song and catchy hook also had a lot to do with it!
from what i know mj didn't want his name on the credits, but you couldn't deny who was on background! big hit back then!
This song was used in a series of Geico commercials where they had a stack of money with googly eyes on it watching a person with a voice over person telling you that you could be saving a stack of money with Geico.
Will y'all please do the Alan parsons project (Damned if I do) the audio version it has everything y'all looking for horns, strings, guitar, vocals I mean a whole syphony..
The ONLY reason this song became a big hit was thanks to Michael Jackson. In 1984, Michael Jackson was the most powerful force in the Universe, you could have recorded him having the hiccups for three minutes and it would have sold millions of copies. Rockwell just happened to be in the right place at the right time when he released this song.
Add had a daddy in the biz. Berry Gordy
@@fishfood8719 That didn't hurt, either...
@@matthewmarcinko9157 yeah, MJ was at the top of his appeal, popularity and success in 84.
He sings the chorus part along with Jermaine and Rockwell sang the rest.
Rockwell is Berry Gordy's son, who is the founder of Motown records.
Love this, and having the King of Pop sing on your record in the 80's was golden!!
A signature dance song at my High School and college years....
Have a great day everyone...peace, love, and happiness to all from your friendly neighbor from the north...
😎🙏❤🇨🇦
Fun fact, Michael Jackson is singing the hook.
To answer your question, the electronic group Mysto & Pizzi covered it for that Geico commercial back in like, ‘08 lololol.
i totally forgot the year! but yes i remember that! i think they even got a platinum plaque for that, or something else.
I Remember when this song came out! I still listen to it when I workout. Lol.
