Our German Shepherd is a rescue. Just after 1 month of 2 recipes of Dr Beckers raw food. As well 3 mile hikes every morning. Chasing rabbits, that he never catches. Fetching ball every evening. His condition has changed dramatically. He is packing on muscle. His coat and his eyes have greatly improved. A very happy dear friend…

Because in the wild the animals have barely any fat AND the dogs don't live indoors either. Have you ever had venison...not a bunch of fat on that either. You have to add fat to make the hamburger from venison.

I thank you for taking the effort to post good quality video on feeding raw. While your approach to feeding raw is much-improved over feeding commercial dog food, your viewers should know that there are dramatically different approaches to raw feeding.
I, for one, feed what is called Prey Model Raw (PMR). This approach feeds whole, raw meat, bones and organs. No fruit and/or veggies. No trimming of fat or skin. I won't go into the details as there is lots of good information on the Web.
I've been feeding PMR for eight years and started after several months of research. While there are many and significant effects of feeding PMR, those people who use it will confirm that one noticeable effect is in the quality of their dog's stool. Dogs that are on commercial diets or that receive a significant amount of fruits and vegetables produce large amounts of stinky stool with a lot of undigested matter. PMR fed dogs produce small, almost odorless stool that quickly deteriorates into an ashy-like substance and "disappears" quickly.
Just this one aspect of PMR demonstrates that its likely that dogs do not need fruit or veggies when their systems reject these products as waste.
In conclusion, I should say that I'm not a PMR fanatic and that I applaud you and people like you who put in the time and effort to improve your dog's health. Cheers

It is all about calories in and calories out -One has to consider how active your dog is. How many calories does your dog need to eat to stay in the best shape (most people over feed their dogs).
Once you have the above questions answered - Ask yourself where do you want your dog to get his calories? From fat or from protien? Dogs like humans need some fat in their diet. look at the dogs total diet. remembe Dr. Karen Becker sent these receipies to the lab to ensure the correct balance of protien to fat. We grnd the bones and bone marrow is very high in fat, we also leave the skin on the wings. Some facts about chicken
There are 90 calories in 1 ounce of raw Chicken Skin.Calorie breakdown: 82% fat, 0% carbs, 18% protein. We discard about 25 lbs of skin - that's 400 ounces that is 36,000 calories. Between the three dogs they would be getting an addtional 1500 calories per week. Calories that come from fat.
Chicken thigh per oz is 39 calories Calorie breakdown: 49% fat, 0% carbs, 51% protei
Chicken Breast per oz is 30 calories in 1 ounce Calorie breakdown: 21% fat, 0% carbs, 79% protein
Chicken Bone Marrow per oz is 230 calories Calorie breakdown: 100% fat, 0% carbs, 0% protein
So I agree, dogs need fat, but leaving the skin, is WAY too much fat. Remember folks, I didn't make this stuff up, I trust the experts, they did all the research, they sent the recipes to the lab. Talk to your vet, know your dog,
Best of luck to all of you. Your dogs are very lucky to have such great parents!

I think with the grinding. It not only helps incorporate so much more into their diets. It really looks like doing it this way for this many dogs. He can take the whole day to do 2 months worth of food. Keep it organized. Than having just random meet packages in his freezers. Plus you minimize choking hazards that can happen. I dont think this is a bad routine at all. You dogs are very well cared for in the food department.

It is a richer muscle meat so feeding it to your dog or cat should be monitored but you can definitely feed more if the beef heart that you should with an actual organ meat such as lung, liver, kidney etc.

Way too high carb-low fat. Dogs are carnivores and wolves in the wild hardly eat veggies and even more rarely eat fruit. At best they eat what’s in the digestive tract of their prey, but I wouldn’t count on that even. Dogs produce their own vitamin c too so just stop at the broccoli and maybe some kale and that’s enough for their requirements.

It's been a while, but I'd like to add... Dogs (and wolves) are actually considered omnivores, because they can digest non-meaty foods and eat 5% or more non-meaty things of their diet. They eat a mostly meat diet, but they can digest fruit, vegetables and other carbs too. Wolves in the wild eat other things besides meat, like grass, fruit and the inside of the stomache of their prey. Dogs have evolved to handle carbs even better. They don't need a lot of it, but it certainly can help and is nutricious. For pups, older dogs and sick dogs, it has good value to get extra vitamines in.

I'm glad there's a vet or there that advocates so strongly with feeding a raw diet. But the only thing I disagree with is all the added veggies and having it ground up. I do occasionally give my dogs fruit as a small snack in the summer, but for the most part I follow the prey model raw diet of 80/10/5/5. It works for me and my dogs and I don't need to buy a grinder. Trust me, paying for my pups is enough. They eat a hundred times better than I do! 😂

Dear Andol, my dog is too spoiled to eat. I can't feed her as well as I wish. I cook for her homemade foods, either raw or not raw, by mixing meats (she prefers chicken and beef, a lot of times minced and I also feed her on organs, skin and cartilage) with vegetables (carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato, greens). But she is hard to get to eat. This made me for a while give up on feeding her the balanced vit and min homecook foods and just feed her on her favorite chicken breast sous-vide and kibble as snack or when she feels hungry. But I feel guilty for not feeding her the whole spectrum of nutrition. However she really challenges me on losing my temper with her tandrums. Which she never wins because I control myself to never lose my temper, I learned that from you. Have you ever encountered a dog too spoiled to eat its food? I will try every suggestion you give, believe me. Now I always rotate her meats and type of foods so that she doesn't get bored with it because she does get bored if I give her 3 times in a row something she will eat well, hoping that is the winning formula! So, I stopped worrying about her not eating and if she wants to eat once a day is fine, if she skips a day is fine, but as a "mom" to my dog this worries me extremely. I wish she was just like every other dog, eating like a crocodile when fed. She is a 3kg toy poodle, too spoiled to scold her. I lost the battle long time ago. So, I give her foods like for example boiled chicken breast and she will not touch it or eat just a little. (sometimes she eats well though) What I observed, if I leave it and the next day I don't throw it away, the breast will naturally dehydrate. I will cook for her a new meal, but will not throw away the first dehydrated one. Well, on the 3rd day, she will eat the dehydrated food I gave her 3 days ago! Instead of the fresh one! Can you please explain me why? Can anyone help me? In 3 years I have tried almost every trick on her. Including not caring and leaving her without food if she doesn't want to eat and putting it back in the fridge. Leave no food except at certain feeding times of the day, like first thing in the morning or noon, or something like this. I also noticed she will bring little bags of kibble to me to feed her at night, when I wake up I have it next to me or in my hand. So she is hungry, but she is hungry at night. I also noticed that if she doesn't eat during the time, she will be hungry at night, but if I feed her at night, her stool might get loose and she will need to go to the toilet at night, which is a problem, because it's not normal to walk my dog in the middle of the night just because she might go wee. But if I don't do that, she might surprise me on the carpet! (or sheet for dog pee which is great, but for that she needs to go to where I put it ). I don't want to feel frustrated with my dog, I just love her too much, and she is incredibly sweet! Everybody loves her. If I go on a visit with her, she will eat well at the visiting family like I never feed her, which pisses me off, yet I am super glad she eats! Please advise!

Dogs certainly don't need the fat simply because the animals that the wolfs (their ancestors) hunted down didnt have any fat on them, they were lean living in the wild. Skin is important too but any kind of cabbage is poison to dogs. Beef is as of lately considered to be a bit acidic. Adding venison once a week is great for them, also fish is something not to be forgotten to be added into their diet.

Chewing is good, but some chicken bones can simply be too big for aggressive eaters. My Dutch Shepherd will swallow as soon as she can, and this means she doesn't crunch the bones well enough. This leads to her vomiting up bone shards every so often because they were too big to digest quickly so her stomach rejects it after a couple days, and I don't have to tell you why that's dangerous. So, for chewing I only like to give smaller chickens w/ bones, and whole fish (Frozen).
Plus, this is a good way to prepare a week or two of food at a time.

The basic science, is variety. Check out Dr. Becker's videos and other materials. She also promotes a guy who developed a food for optimal nutrition. Steve Brown is his name I believe. Basically, as long as you are giving variety, on a weekly basis, eventually your dog will show it. It doesn't have to be perfect or contain specific ingredients for each meal. Think of your dog as a child. Just take your time incorporating new foods to avoid upset stomach or bowel problems.

    • @MonsieurRaki
      @MonsieurRaki Před 3 lety

It's been a while and maybe you've already gotten your answers. Just in case: you freeze the meat and then let it thaw in the fridge. In the video they made a bath for 8 weeks. They can't cook that food, because it has bones in it. You can only give a dog raw bones, not cooked (very dangerous, can cause splinters). Raw food is more natural to a dog's digestive system, which is similar to that of a wolf. But you can give cooked meats and veggies. For some vegetables it's even better to cook them to break down their cells, so it's easier to digest and get the nutrients in.

@Jeff Jones, prongs (pinch collars) are blunt and don't actually hurt the dog, they aren't "abuse" if used correctly. They give a correction using pressure, not pain. They are also a lot safer for a dog than a flat collar because they apply an even pressure around the neck when corrections are given. Unlike a flat collar which applies pressure directly on the trachea. Do a little research before smarting off in the comments of a video, bud.
