    What models love most and what inspires them to be animated is to put them in front of a mirror at all times. I have a 4' wide x 7' tall mirror on wheels I put on the set whether I'm shooting headshots or figure. Tell them to primp and pretend they're all alone in their room. They love it! And they give me some wonderful looks. It also loosens them up tremendously.

    Ah, my first man-crush. Seriously though, this guy knows his stuff and inspires me. I have no idea how to make people feel comfortable in front of the camera and spend too much time caught up in the technical details. This is gold and exactly what I need.

    I went and watched his "The Basic Headshot" lecture here on B&H - he's awesome. The approach he has with his subjects is brilliant. I think it helped him tremendously that he's been in front of the camera as well as at the back of it.

    Paper's great in a studio, but it's awkward to transport (even if you stick to 53" rolls). For location, muslins are great - if you scrunch them up rather than folding them. You can't avoid creases, so make sure there are so many of them in so many directions that they fade into, well, the background and don't form a pattern. Jerseys can be stretched out to eliminate wrinkles, and work really well as pop-ups (same sort of thing as collapsible reflectors).

    Hello,
    I was wondering what microphone you used for Peter during this shoot. I thought you would pick up echo or a hollow sound since he is in a studio but his audio is crisp and clear. What microphone brand or type do you recommend when recording audio in a studio type atmosphere or a small room that picks up echo background sound?
    Thank you!

  • @BandH
    @BandH  Před 11 lety

    Paper will not be easy to carry. The best way to deal with cloth back drops is to invest is a small portable streamer or steam iron. Steam is the best way to get rid of creases in material.

    Nice video, I felt bad for him when he was describing dissecting the face into quadrants for lighting; this set up was very boring flat lighting. Barely saw a 2:1 ratio but it is a nice interview. Mostly about his insight which is good to learn from.

    You are obviously a very experienced photographer. But let me express this idea. When you start directing someone, and that is the essence of your area of photography, you are changing who they are, their very nature. In effect, you are making something that is artificial. I can appreciate the art of directing in photography but I also criticize it for the very reasons I've just expressed.

    This guy doesn't know WTF he's talking about. He says his continuous light brings out the color of the eye because it makes the pupil small. I'm here in my bathroom at night looking in the mirror with nothing but a 7-watt nightlight and my pupil is tiny. So, unless he's shooting at night with ALL the room lights OUT and NO modeling lights, eyes will have plenty of light and plenty of color for strobe photography. And what model/subject wants all those bright lights around their face, so close and confining?? He's just selling equipment for B&H. "SALES Perspectives". LOL

    • @michaelandrews4403
      @michaelandrews4403 Před 6 lety

      "This guy doesn't know WTF he's talking about." - Really?
      ...and how close to his New York Studio are you working?
      How many people are asking you to educate about headshot/portrait photography?
      How many customers do you have queuing at the door to pay you $2500 to have their picture taken?
      peterhurley.com/rates
      Incidentally, the further you pull a light source from the Subject the harder you make that light source.
      A Softbox should be, almost, touching the Subject, to achieve maximum softness.
