The building was, at one time, 1,472 feet tall to the tip of it’s spire. It was eventually lowered to 1,454 feet but I cannot recall why.
At one time, from one of it’s street entrances to it’s roof (excluding antenna), Chicago’s Sears Tower (now known officially as the Willis Tower) was also 1,454 feet tall. This was changed to 1,451 feet because they were using a lower street entrance and not the main one when measuring the height of the building.
With it’s taller antenna added, of which there are two, the Sears Tower stands 1,729 feet tall. It held the record of being the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere by roof height from 1973 until recently when New York’s Central Park Tower surpassed it. That new giant along “Billionaire’s Row” topped out at 1,550 feet from ground to roof. It is nearly 200 feet taller by roof height than the 1,368 foot tall One World Trade Center. That building is commonly referred to as the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere because of it’s antenna, which also doubles as a spire.
By roof height, at least three towers in NYC are taller than One World Center. They are 432 Park Avenue, 111 West 57th and Central Park Tower.

I'd argue they'd be way less iconic if they were still up imo. The Empire State Building was definitely more famous than the Twin Towers before 2001 (I'd argue it still is. Everyone knows the Empire State as an American icon). If not for the incident, the Twin Towers really don't stand out that much architecturally, with the only special thing being that there were two of them.

A dirigible approach was tried one time. Air currents swirling around the building made it a wild ride. Then the pilot did something that the building designers hadn't thought of. He dumped ballast water, soaking people on the streets for blocks. The ESB is overbuilt by a considerable percentage; it took a direct hit from a B-25 Mitchel bomber on July 28th, 1945 without compromising its structural integrity. Great video, thanks!

Whenever I see anything on tv, whether it’s a fictional movie or tv show or a nonfiction documentary, I always wonder exactly where it is but that info is never available; which makes me wonder if I’m the only one that cares about that sort of thing. And the time line gave an awesome perspective of history; tying things together and putting things into perspective. It is indeed a rare talent to have this sort of insight as a teacher. I tend to think and talk a lot about the sort of things on your channel, which is probably why my wife always said nobody cares about what I have to say. There's a very narrow stair way that leads to the 103rd floor. It looks very similar to a set of narrow narrow stairs in the Cincinnati Museum Center Union Terminal on its 3rd-4th floors. Which makes sense since both buildings were built in the 30s

Fun fact: When the Empire State Building was built, it didn't have an antenna. It wasn't installed until 1953, due to ensure that it would be taller than the Chrysler Building.

This masterpiece was built in 1931. Nothing man made in the world at the time matched its height. The exterior of
this marvel of architecture and engineering is composed of 200,000 cubic feet of limestone and granite,10 million bricks
and 730 tons of aluminum and stainless steel. It has 6,500 windows and 73 elevators. In 1931 it cost $41 million to build.
If it were to be built now that cost would be approximately 3 billion in today's dollars.
