I've lived off grid full time for the past three years. Water is absolutely the key, especially clean drinking water. For us off grid means all our power and water and heat is from the homestead with no outside inputs. We have solar for power and rain cistern and filters for water and heat comes from wood grill the property. It's do able but you have to set it up right.
