Coast Guard escorted cruise ship I was on to foreign port. I knew due to military training that there was some sort of threat towards us. Told friends I was with & they freaked out. Explained to them that we were safe because Coast Guard had our back. They immediately calmed down. When we disembarked ship we yelled praises to crew on Coast Guard ship. I could tell Sailors appreciated us recognizing them.
PS I’m a three star momma, 3 daughters, one Air Force, one Navy, one Army

The comment made by the crew about the last mission regarding the 29 year old mom and her 8 month and 2 year old daughters made me smile. They had been concerned about the children in the helicopter - which of course was totally understandable and the men were all so pleased and proud when they delivered the mom and her kids to the care they all needed (the kid's grandparents were there to take them on). Watching them carrying the baby and toddler from the aircraft - both had been asleep most of the trip - they all looked like new dads, except they all knew how to handle their "precious cargo". Seems they are already dads, which helped! But they so happy it all worked out and the little girls had been such angels, I think they might have been motivated to go have more of their own! Good men, doing a hard job, prepared for chaos they would have to secure and then try to focus on the mother - and it all worked out so well. Amazing job, so well done! Thank you gentlemen!

I think what makes this somewhat unique is the idea of handling babies in the very small area of a military rescue helicopter. It was not really a baby proof environment so they couldn't even blink. (don't let the toddler near the winch controls! Put a blanket over the axe...) Of course, it was the same job it always is, except the needs of each rescue are unique to their situation.

@@julieenslow5915I agree. When our baby was airlifted to a children's hospital, they wouldn't even let one of us go with because of space. When I was airlifted to a hospital across state, they would not let my little girl go so she had to stay with a security person until a relative could come. In both instances all permissions had to be done via phone. They assumed people could drive wherever. I suppose up there it is not always an option to have family just meet them at this place because of the remoteness.

I'm sitting here crying from such happiness because when I was little , I remember my Mom Dying and when the Ambulance came to get her, the Driver was so nice to myself and my Sister's. It was a horrible experience at 7 years old , but I do remember being consoled by the Ambulance Personnel and feeling safe and secure because of them... We are glad to have the Coast Guard here in Oregon. We witnessed them rescue a tourist who was climbing on large rocks off the shore. The guy had gotten trapped when the tide came in. He as cold and wet from sea spray. It would possibly be 10-11 hours until the tide went down again. He was very lucky to have the CoastGuard stationed close enough to hoist him up off the rocks. They set him down in a road rest area where my husband and I were working. The Coast Guard also does a lot of search and rescue for fishing vessels. The bean counters wanted to close this station but the community convinced them the station was needed. It makes my feel good to know the Coast Guard is there when we need them. They are a good use of tax payer dollars.

Neither of my boys (5.5 years apart) *EVER SLEPT!!!* From the time they were 2 months old, we’d do the 400 miles (7 hours) diagonally across the extreme ends of Wisconsin (SE to NW) 3-4 times per year, and they never slept for even 10 minutes-EVER! Didn’t matter if we started before the sun rose or in the evening through the night, they were 100% wide awake. And I should add that it didn’t matter where they went, they never shut their eye. At least they were really good travelers, and they loved books as they got older, before people put stupid TVs in their cars.

It takes a very special person to do as a job/lifestyle. Not everyone can turn adrenalin into a focus awareness. Most lose control. It's awesome to see great men and women at work doing what they love.

focused, calm and professional to a degree you cannot emulate, you set the example me and women alike, what makes you effective is you keep focus, one detail at a time, no mistakes, step by step, your coordination is impeccable, its been said and accurately so , no plan survives first contact, yet you guys respond to situation that have no plan, just a situation , not a plan, and still pull it off...... we recognize and love you

The USCG pilots, swimmers and flight mechanics have to have nerves of steel to do this every day almost in routine. Amazing crews.

I love that a few of these episodes shows them using the Gazetteer to figure out the location--I've used and appreciated these map books for decades.
