The critics destroyed this film when it debuted, but thankfully, critics don't really get to decide what is great and what isn't. This wonderful little film became a hit because it has a wonderful story, wonderful actors and wonderful music written by Adam Schlesinger. Sadly, Adam is no longer with us, but his music and contributions will stay with us forever!

this was in the late stage of the RomCom era. By then they were predictable and people were sick of them. Drew Barrymore had also established herself as one of the most irritating women in film. The music story was nice but the love story and her writing woes were a bit nauseating.
I love the emotional twist of Cora's character. They made her look like a stupid teenager who just wants to be the next Shakira all throughout the film, and now she's suddenly grown. She's quiet, calm, she lets herself be herself in front of everyone because she knows she can't talk about love and wear that mask at the same time. And a girl who realizes that and is brave enough to allow herself to change without fighting it and to allow her fans to grow up with her (notice the manager's daughter going through that moment right there?) Can't be stupid no matter how much you try to make her look like it. And I know it's just a Rom-Com but that's one hell of a character work. As a writer I'm really impressed, I actually learn from that.
The way that Cora expresses such profound character development without having any spoken lines is really impressive. She gently mocks her own persona with that little wiggle. She's so relaxed and genuinely happy to let someone else take the spotlight and stand there innocently clapping like a sealion at 1:47. I think critics perhaps failed to see that this film is quite an intelligent, but fittingly gentle, meditation on what it means to be a mediocrity and the happiness that can come from accepting one's limitations. Alex has integrated the fact he's a has-been; that humility is a very attractive aspect of his character. By example, he teaches both Sophie and Cora to let go of their fear of not being the best, and they both end up doing better work than they did before. Alex and Cora's relationship is essentially Amadeus' story of Salieri and Mozart (in respective popularity, if not objective talent) if neither of them were jerks.
they actually alluded Britney Spears a bit with her character. This was when celebrities were using religion like fashion accessories and Britney was using the in vogue religion of Kabbalah. Hence the faux Buddhism thing. Her dance moves and some of her outfits are also similar.
Truth. I definitely think that Britney was the biggest inspiration for her role, with a splash of Shakira, etc. Buddah's Delight sounds very similar to Britney's song, Toxic.@@MsJubjubbird

Hailey is such a UNDERRATED ACTRESS... i am still waiting for her to actually become a SINGER in REALITY....she's got that IT FACTOR & i really want her to put out a FULL ALBUM MUSIC..

This movie is exactly everything for what it was made... and "critics" crucify it of bad, terrible and blah, blah... damn, the story is simple and genuine, it has great original songs for the film and that is the stronger point of the movie that fits perfect with every special moment. And Hugh Grant's dancing moves are funny and sticky lol and that was the point... The only bad thing i've found are the bad actings of the guy who was supposed to write the song for Alex Fletcher, he was unnecesary. This movie doesn't deserves those 5/10 and 6/10 ratings...
One of the best and most underrated rom-coms ever that even non-rom-com enthusiasts would enjoy, loved the script and acting. And the music in it is great, Adam nailed it, drawing from Wham!, Duran Duran, etc, for Hugh Grant to Britney Spears, Madonna, etc. for Haley Bennett.
This movie is especially fun if you were young and into pop music and videos back in the 80s. We remember the PoP type bands all the years later, watching the “has beens” on VH1 who were never seen that way to us. Love and miss you 80s, and miss the days when MTV was young, really cool and fun.
Hugh grant is underated i love his movies notting hill music and lyrics and 4 weddings and a funeral.. I hope he can do another romcom movie with drew again..
Sadly, he said he's not doing any more of them. He's doing serious roles and getting the critical acclaim he deserves. Great in The Undoing with Nicole Kidman.
