- The Twin Cities is home to one of the largest populations of Somali immigrants in Minnesota, and while this population has become an integral part of the community fabric, its members are facing increasing bigotry and continued lower socioeconomic outcomes than the community’s white residents. Ahmed Ismail Yusuf, author of “The Lion’s Binding Oath,” sits with Susan Saulny to discuss his experience as a first-generation Somali-American writer and teacher, as well as the region’s changing identity.

Disappointed in some of these comments, but sadly not shocked by the ignorance. Somali people or any people that come to America are not simply given handouts, they work hard to be here. They come from a country where they face many struggles that many people in America can't and won't understand (fortunately). Because of this, they have to work much harder. Also, facing societal pressures that many "Americans" put on them to assimilate... THEY DONT NEED TO ASSIMILATE INTO AMERICAN CULTURE, it is brave of them to hold onto their culture and who they are
