    This performance was, in a way, the genesis of Madonna's career. She was unveiling her new single at Danceteria, the club that was the epicentre of the Dance Music scene in NYC in 1982 and Madonna's stomping ground. Madonna was a fixture at Danceteria for some time before breaking out, and was so well known there that she had a following of copycat girls who dressed and danced like her. This performance was a very important moment for her, finally making the transition from being a dancer in the audience at to the performer on stage at the Danceteria. It's pretty amazing that this milestone was captured so clearly on film.

    • @aaronmunro5818
      @aaronmunro5818 Před 3 lety +75

      Very accurate. I was there often around this time and Madonna was also at Danceteria all the time, just hanging out and dancing, sometimes by herself. When it turned out she was actually singing/writing songs AND got a record contract with Sire, a lot other club-goers (myself included) were like "What? How'd that happen?" The rest is history. Amazing.

    This was a magical time to be in New York. It was incredibly cheap to live there. Manhattan was filled with artists. Culturally, music, art, fashion, theatre all came together as a life style. We were living it in the East Village. She was expressing that lifestyle. Madonna didn't create it all be herself, she took the best of the iconic styles we were all working on the streets and she was able to show it to the world.

      It's true! A lot of people don't realize that. This style of music was a black genre. Madonna was inspired by and looked up to Black musicians and singers, growing up in Detroit. She has good knowledge of Black musicians, and gives credit where it's due. Her first singles (this and Holiday, Lucky Star) were only played in Black radio and then Holiday crossed over. I always liked Black dance music, too, and that's where I heard her. I was surprised when I saw the Holiday video on MTV!

      Madonna had recorded other original songs before striking it with Warner/Sire. She had recorded songs when she was with Camille Barbone but since they owned the demos, Madonna could not use them and would be embroiled in a legal battle for decades to finally get the rights. It is true that "Everybody" was her first true commercial hit, but she had always written and recorded music before.. :).

      She wasn't seen as a pure vocalist like Whitney, Mariah, Celine, whose gifted vocals could shatter glasses but couldn't dance for *beep*. Madonna was a trained dancer first then the singing came about.

      @@gabbyb7347 Whitney, Celine, and Madonna started their careers at about the same time, but Mariah arrived later in 1990. The media had a love-hate relationship with Madonna since the beginning. They tried to pit her against Cyndi Lauper, who was a talented singer but she too, couldn't dance. Madonna could sing but dancing was what she was first trained and excel at. I don't think she was formally trained in songwriting or singing but those talents just came about... after spending endless hours at NYC's dance clubs and collaborating with the right people.

    • @tauras665
      @tauras665 Před 3 lety +9

      @@minty5121 Cyndi Lauper couldn't dance??? Bullshit !! To even try to compare the 2 is really stupid. Cyndi from a punk rock/ rock a billy background and being 10 years older than Madonna. Madonna wanted fame and didn't care what type of music she put out. Cyndi, fought for creative control of her music. Madonna was busting out albums yearly, Cyndi was putting out albums much slower. Madonnas look was easier to emulate for all the teenage girls where as Cyndis look was harder to copy.

    • @minty5121
      @minty5121 Před 3 lety +11

      @@tauras665 See Cyndi's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" to Madonna's "Dress You Up" music video or "She Bop" to "Open Your Heart". Umm no, 80's teenage girls copied Madonna's style cause it was relatable. Most teenage girls preferred to look attractive, sexy, and chic NOT silly and goofy 😁.
