Replaced my bearing yesterday. It was easier than most online said it would be. What was not easy was replacing the intermediate steering shaft. It is still on the truck as it is rust welded on the lower steering shaft. Rattle is gone but I am going to replace the entire shaft to the gearbox here soon. Glad I was under hood as I saw a slice in my serpentine belt and replaced that. 24 mm wrench helped seating new bearing.
I've yet to have to replace this bearing on a chevy but I'm sure my days coming as I'm currently looking for an older suburban. However, I have replaced the wire ribbon spool in other vehicles, yeah, its a bit of a pain but doable. Been twisting wrenches too many years to back away from it now, lol...looks like an engineering issue with chevy steering columns. The shift with a plastic caged bearing is the collapse zone for the steering column in case of an accident. This is a very good piece of information to know, thanks for the share....
changed it on mine yesterday n it's fixed thanks for the info wouldn't have done it if I didn't watch this video
Glad I could help, thanks for watching!
That’s a back breaking job i also replaced the shaft while I was at it got the improved doorman part. 👍🏻
Hy there thanks for the video great job. Just one question will that work also on my 2001 suburban. Thanks
I did this yesterday. The old one was green and thought great I’m swapping the same part. But the old green one wasn’t a dorman. It had 6 splines and the dorman has 8 splined teeth on the bearing. Took 30 to 45 minutes to do. Take off gas pedal and gas perch for more room. Take the shaft out and you can push it in with just fingers. Grease it before hand and it’ll go. Just have to push in pretty firm with just fingers. It’s really simple to do.
Good video, thank you!!! I...might be doing my brother jims soon! Lol. Thanks again,, bud!!! Don W., Ohio
Awesome thanks for sharing 😎🇺🇸
My shaft has a cover on it so I can't do anything to it. What can I do
did the shaft and the dormen bearing every thing worked for two weeks noise is back not as bad PUT it stills noisey at times installed a hose clamp on the steering column noise is gone
Where did you place the clamp? My rattling has returned after 4 months, around the bottom of hollow tube?
Hi I'm back . when I'm truning left my steering wheel Lock s up and I have to force it straight feels like it's binding . and when I force it straight I hear a Cracking sound from the steering column . scary when it happens .any ideas thanks 👍🇨🇦
What if I have a dual triangle sensor?
why don't they show the rattle or sound it makes?? would be very helpful
My 07 Silverado rattles when slowing down. Thinking this is the problem.
you prob need a shaft the bearing you took out was a replacement
What year models or generations is this a problem in usually ?
That's a real paint and body guy there in a booth smoking a cigarette , no respirator, and volatile fumes.
Oh and don't worry about any respiratory protection when painting. Fumes are good for you
Plus they make you see sounds, always a plus
I saw that and was hoping they just have crazy good ventilation
Was he smoking?
He was smoking a filtered cigarette so he good.
Would this “steering wheel rattle” cause the front end to feel like it’s rattling when going over a pothole ? I can almost see the hood bouncing rapidly... seems like it would be more than a steering issue but I’m leaning towards it after throwing parts at it for a while now....
Yes this could def be the issue. You can check by reaching up under the dash and grabbing the smaller end of the column just below this bearing and try to move it. If it moves or makes noise any at all it’s bad.
Before you do anything,
Take plastic cover off top of steering wheel where flasher button is.
Start truck and turn wheel until you can see a 25 torx head screw. Tighten. Turn wheel opposite until other torx head comes around. Tighten. Maybe put some locktite on them?
can you please tell how you get the plastic cover off the top of the steering wheel?
Does the shaft just slide down after you take the bolt out or something else you have to loosen to get it apart to get the bearing off mine doesnt slip down with bolt out
Did you ever get this fixed? Mine won’t move either
That bushing that was removed was a Dorman, being replaced by another Dorman. Old part was probably only 3 months old
They are garbage. Not worth the 30 cents worth of plastic they are made of. Just take a die grind or dremel tool with a cutting disc and cut a small slot or two along the length of the steel sleeve and throw a hose clamp around that bitch.
Any recommendations other than doorman?
Also wondering if he had a bad intermediate that caused that old one to go out fast (very probable)
@@the46guide94 Pretty sure there aren't any real alternatives. Dorman part looks just like the AC Delco part, and lasts just as long.
I trimmed back the spline on my replacement bearing. Has anyone done this to ease bearing insertion..
@southmainauto he said dorman oh nooo
hmmmm the body flex and the slip joint... a creek in the shaft I have done hundreds of them and it fixed the all and the chevy relube bulletin too
Yes for the creaking definitely the slip joint, luckily my intermediate shaft looks like it had already been replaced too.
they only last so long what happened to the rag joint
I replace those crappy rag joints in Dakotas ALL THE TIME lol
the u joint in durangos the older chevy rag... never creeked and I never replaced one... but it is old school
My 2012 1 ton with 20k miles rattles on bumps at the column, could this be the same issue at such low miles?
Very well could be this or the intermediate shaft itself.
New subscriber .I have GMC Sierra pickup truck.i get when I turn slow a Knocking noise on the left side it' only happened one's but I have a lous steering wheel. When driving and hit a bump my steering wheel pulls easy by it self .any ideas ? Thanks
4x4? I’d say CV axle.
@@dennisrandall9698 not a 4x4
No not a 4x4
Great video, just one problem! I saw a craftsman wrench there and I thought you were a Snap On guy, what's up? Lol, all good brother keep the videos coming.
Lol! I DO love my Snapon, just can’t afford a Snapon set at work AND at home yet😏 Thanks for the support!
Nice tip. How’s the weather? Lol. :)
Lmao!!
Is this same on 1998 chevy Cheyenne k3500?
Honestly not sure
I fixed this problem for
Hello sir where did put the zip tie? I like your idea. Thanks for responding?
@@minnesota7010 I inserted it through the hole (the hole points up when the part is installed) on outer round edge of the green plastic part that holds the actual bearings. Then, wrapped the zip tie around a metal part above it. This just pulls the bearing holder to remove the play, or movement, of the bearings or maybe the movement of the actual steering wheel shaft. I inserted another zip tie to be sure. I actually stole the idea from another gentleman who had posted a video about it.
@@Patriot-bn9om Thanks bro I just fixed it because of your instructions. Thank you bro. If you ever come to Minnesota I'll buy the rounds. Thank you.....
@@Patriot-bn9om you ain’t gonna take him up on tht?
Dear Rustbelt, 2500 HD Diesel Duramax, same part and install? Thanks!
Yes that’s what this was done on...2006 Chevy 2500HD
my steering wheel have plenty of play so is this the culprit cause i will do this right now my steering wheel is hard to turn sometimes and that's dangerous so i want my steering strong and sturdy and not loose i been driving like that for a very long time and it's time i fix it
How did the job go?
He should have a mask on when spraying. Here in London Ontario. Love your content.
That painter is not only not wearing mask but he also has a cig in his mouth... just crazy
I thought that was a cigarette...lol The Mechanics at my job fill up our trucks at the pump while smoking. No one says anything unless they smoke inside the building.
There is hair under that hat .looks great.
What’s the part number
1:33
Do them both at the same time and be done with it.
A hose clamp just above the bearing stops the noise and fixed the problem replacing it doesn’t it will come back
Patrick Rolf, where exactly did you installed it?
I changed it but after a week or so, I have the same problem again
Just above the bearing it’s just enough to squeeze the housing and take the play/noise out.
Patrick Rolf, so I don’t have to remove the shaft bearing, just attach a hose clamp on the “pipe” or metal housing correct?
You don’t have to take anything apart the hose clamp goes in side only takes 5 min
Plastic junk,Another outstanding GM Engineer fkup,no matter how you fix it it'll always come back, unless you weld the shaft to the inside of the tube,my fix lasted 4 months Dorman junk, metal bearings plastic race, insanity at its finest
Was the point of this video just to give an overview? You didnt show any of the actual work it takes to remove and install new part. My guess is because its a major pain in the ass. Waste of time video
