I just found this film recently, and have been rewatching it a few times, only to find out Marie Claire Olivia the actress that plays Olivia only just passed away 2 week ago!

Omg! I had no idea that she passed. Around this time last year (when I watched Olivia for the first time) I took a look at the cast to find that Marie Claire Olivia was one of the only actors still alive.
That's the worst part about watching older movies such as this - you form an attachment to it and it's characters only to remember/find out that the majority of the cast has died (sometimes even decades prior!) Personally, it is one of the worst feelings. It does, however, in a strange way, make you appreciate said film that much more!
Rest in peace Marie Claire Olivia (1931-2023).

I wholeheartedly agree, Feuillère has embodied Mlle Julie so perfectly, that to me, there is only 1 de facto version of Mlle Julie and that is Feuillère. My mind’s version of Dorothy Bussy’s Mlle Julie cannot hold a candle to her.
My heart aches that she’s not in the same world as us anymore as I’d probably not be able to witness a woman like her again in my lifetime. It is so bittersweet that she’ll only live on through the screen and the memories of others she has unknowingly touched years after her death.

Julie was bidding Olivia to come to her (where she would be in Canada) when she said that she would "fail". That way she knew she would not be the one responsible for "corupting" her fully so to speak. She was very much a frustrated lesbian and trying to control her urges. It became too much when she fell in love with Olivia... In my mind, Olivia eventually went to Julie and got it onnnnnn

@@Shylah08 I'm glad :) It made me feel so much better realising that. The whole sentence is blatant, forward and yet said in her usual, almost offensive way. I would like to not have read the book though - Collete's script rewrite is better. One part that was greatly improved in the film was "pretty mouth" as opposed 'to pretty feet"!! Maybe book Julie had a foot fetish. Nothing surprises me with her! Love her to bits.

The book is actually telling us what happened after Julie and Signora moved to Canada. Olivia kept sending letters to them, but never visited. Julie never replied to her letters, but Signora did. Julie even told Signora to stop doing that, and write a letter to Olivia to stop sending letters as well. Signora didn't listen to her though. And, after four years of Olivia getting letters from Signora about news and such (fun fact, Julie refused to start a new school there. She became a translator instead, and Signora was giving private Italian classes), a tragic thing happens... I don't want to give spoilers

    • @LilBafta
      @LilBafta Před rokem +6

@@kazu._.kazama yes I have read the book, but the film - very much ike both Madchen in Uniform films - is an interpretation. Olivia is a story at the end of the day and I would rather not focus on the sad, tragic version but on the film where Olivia gets the letter opener at the end of the school and not after mlle Julie follows the rainbow years later. The book made me feel quite shaken and there has been enough of that in LGBT media to last many lifetimes so I follow J. Audry and her sister, Collete's screenplay for possible clues! Have a great day and thanks for your comment.

If anyone is interested, theres a discussion about Olivia (the novella) by Andre Aciman(author of CMBYN) and Stacey D'Erasmo(queer author) on CZcams.
Stacey's interpretation of the part where Mlle Julie was about to part with Olivia in her library/office was enlightening!
    The video title is:

I understand it's just how the times were back then, but if anyone knows a movie with queer themes like this that are happy or at least neutral (in the ending or in full) I'd be interested to watch it.
I sacrificed my good night's sleep for this but I don't regret it. I wasn't able to turn it off even when I didn't want to watch anymore because it was so sad and frustrating :'(

Do you feel that miss cara (simone simon) was murdered? and by whom, and why? Would miss Julie go to prison if she behaved like this in a modern boarding school? Clearly, she had a habit of falling for her female students.

It really bothered me that m. Julie would go to others girls bedrooms too. It makes the relationship with Olivia less special, even though i believe that she indeed liked her more, but i would hope for more hints of that

I had read the book and I really think that Cara committed suicide by overdose, because she whispered "I wish I haven't done it" or something right before (or after??; I must reread the book) getting her medicine. Olivia's thoughts in the book gives the reader another theory, and that would be of Cara's health being so fragile, that the dosage she was prescribed was too strong. But the doctor was denying this theory because his reputation might have been destroyed if people found out that he prescribed the wrong dose.

I think Frau masterminded the whole thing and told Ms Dubois the wrong dosage so that Cara would die and Frau would inherit all the capital

Many scenes stayed the same, others were combined two in one and others were changed in dialogue, or a few actions. The ending was different, it was open- the book definitely gave it a permanent ending. I would say it's 7.5/10 to the book
