  • Our #twilightzone Marathon of REVIEWS continues with 'The Lateness of the Hour.' Inger Stevens, John Hoyt and Irene Tedrow star in this bizarre tale about a wealthy family living a sheltered life. Nothing is as it seems in this classic, written by Rod Serling and directed by Jack Smight.

What a sad episode,Inger Stevens was really good here as well. I wish Jana could have at least gotten to go outside once.

I couldn't stop laughing at the pronunciation of "Robot" lol. I don't know what surprised more, the plot twist or what happened to Jana at the end. The acting is just absolutely incredible. This episode really makes me think about the difference between humanity and machinery, not just literally but figuratively and symbolically. You are right, people sometimes over rely on modern technology. Technology does help us, but over relying on it makes us too dependent.

Aww this episode sounds both creepy and sad at the same time. I really like that concept too

Hands down the best of the videotape episodes of season 2. I love the lead actress, I feel for her so much.

Another great review, Anthony! I almost forgot about this one since I've probably only seen this maybe once, but it's another good one (and really are there any truly bad episodes?). I really appreciated the trivia on the cast and their prior TZ appearances. And I know I've said this before, but I'll say it again, it's such a shame they had to do these videotape episodes because the video and audio quality is just not up to par with the rest. I agree with your assessment of the thematic elements here especially overprotective parents but I think you can also contemporarize it a bit more to add cabin fever from pandemic lockdown and being cooped up in your house forever, never venturing to the outside world, thankfully not the case anymore. But overall, yes, a very solid episode. It's not so much that the reveal of her being a robot is needed to be a complete shock since it's clearly building up to it, but rather ultimately how satisfying it's executed which is another reason why I love TZ.

You have to really stop and appreciate how much he was in tune with human behavior. We are pretty much living this today. There will never be another storyteller like rod.

Another "TZ" episode recorded on videotape instead of film.

I think the ending fits for the twilight zone format of ironic punishment but i don't think it fits the reading they intended. With the over reliance on machines of the ending naration i don't think it fits. The way the story is it feels more about humilitiy and not looking down on others. Jana sees the workers as lesser than herself and her family because they are robots and I think it can be used well agianst racist who don't realize their ancestors was that race they despise or more accurately the rich looking down on the working class just trying to do their best. I think her going from a privleged life and using it to demean the workers with ending up having to take their place. But I don't think the story fits outside of the twilight zone just because I don't think the parents would reprogram her and use the model of their daughter as their new maid. For what i'd change is add in lines that all the robots have known her since birth because i really liked that grin the maid did after being pushed down, like the maid already knew the daughter was a robot. Have the daughter demand he get rid of the robots and he just says he can't bring himself to do it and when the daughter ask why is it so hard, they're just dumb robots, have the maid say that it's because "we're his children". Have her say thta's dumb that they're just robots and that maid spites back with "that didn't stop them from loving you" and that's when the parents come clean. Jana can't handle it and tries to prove she's real and that causes her to break from a fall. Have the parents reveal that's another failed attempt and hopefully the next jana isn't so hateful. Yes it's a obvious twist but that doesn't mean it's bad to use. And I think it fits the story and characters better.

Inger Stevens was a wonderful actress, it's a shame she died so young........This episode is one of my very favorites, and along with 'Twenty - Two', another of my favorites, I think it works very well being done on video

This is one I don't remember, and I thought I had all of the episodes ingrained in my memory forever! Great discussion! Inger Stevens and John Hoyt are both very good actors. Strange that you would compare this to a Dark Shadows episode, because John Hoyt kind of looked like Jonathan Frid in some scenes.

On a somber note, when Jayna finds out she is a Robutt...Erm...Robot 😂 It always makes me choke up and feel sad when she is hitting her arm on the stairwell banister saying "No Pain!...And No Love!... Even though the mother and father are telling her that they do love her no matter what she is. It's a gift to be loved by somebody and to love someone. Love is Love. 💖

Another excellent episode Anthony. That ‘robet’ was really irritating me, so you gave me a good giggle when you corrected that.

Wow. This episode was tense, bleak, surprising, and interesting. This is possibly your best video. There are some parts that made me laugh out loud. Good job, and now I want to see this episode.
