    Well, you can converse back and forth as to Clive's contribution to music...but nobody can doubt that he was part of an industry that took nearly complete advantage of thousands of young, talented, ignorant, motivated artists. All sides must be made available to fairly assess his place in music.

    Clive Davis:The Soundtrack Of Our Lives is an awesome documentary. I knew who he was but didn't know his story.Totally cool guy and it was totally worth watching. For a guy who can't play any instruments and no real musical background,his musical ear and intuition is like Steve said "Incredible".

    Legend is used too cheaply today. In Clive's case it's insufficient to describe his awesome contribution. And he's still going. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

    I did security for Mr Davis's J Records(at the time) debut record release party for Alicia Keys in 01' in NYC. Who cares Bro!!!!?? Mr Davis is indeed a legend...

    I have no idea how his guy became what he became or did what he did. But. He has some kind of weird talent that is not "musical" but has everything to do *music*. He's like the Jimi Hendrix of A&R. Or something.

      Early 60's he started as a lawyer for CBS records. Then the bosses let him deal with all the new artists on the label. That way he started to sign bands and JANIS JOPLIN.

      I always just assumed Bruce played "Spirits In the Night" for John Hammond and that song was so undeniable he got signed on the strength of it alone. He invests in rap...hip hop last 25 years? He can't find quality new rockers? Fuck that that silly old man.

      i mean to make it the standard again,we've allowed technology to take over in areas to our own detriment.which is why the music industry has suffered.sure,it puts pressure on the artist to try to make every song a hit,but it was so much better before when you put an album on the player with anticipation of what you were gonna hear.now its too much power in the customers hands.

    Well, rock is about freedom. We're in a period where freedom isnt cool. So rock isnt going to be either. Nothings more rocknroll than Donald Trump right now. Thats just a fact. But thats not cool to say. Its true though. I dont think rock is coming back any time soon.

      IMO not really actually the original artist and repetiore man...he was a suit but very much knew talent...he would find the studio and production team. ..he was an old school talent guy...like Ahmet Ertegun...knows songs singers and the ingredients to make hits

      Did you read his autobio, i don't remember about that. But he grew up in NY 30's crisis, lost his parents very young. Also many easteuropeans changed their difficult names.

      Those bands were in UK. Arista ope rated from NY. He signed Lou Reed Iggy P op Patti Smith Tom Verlaine just to piss off other labels haha. But Clive likes Sinatra. But he did manage to score a huge hit with Patti Smith( he got Springsteen telephone number for those business matters)

      it's only pretentious if you don't know what you're talking about - clive does. what he says may sound boastful, but he has been there/done that and i think is more than qualified to talk about how 'great' he his. if you've been responsible for so much great stuff, you can just be completely factual and it still sounds (to normal people) conceited and name-dropping.
