    As someone who is qualified in electrical and electronic engineering and has worked in electrical and electronic assembly, I can categorically state you don't need to, and should not solder that connection. Connections are either soldered connections or a crimp/clamp connection not both as it leads to unreliable joints. The correct joint for the application and done correctly is the best joint.
    In that banana plug there are two screws one for the electrical connection and the other for the wire sheath for strain relief, there should be no copper visible in the cutout. The cut out is probably there to make sure the wire is stripped and inserted correctly not for you to add solder.
    The heat shrinkable tube is: Heat Shrink tube.

    One note, since you left the conductors unpaired on the speaker end, you dropped your gauge for the speaker's woofers back down to 14ga. Your point about the pair of 14ga being effectively 11ga is only true if you link them at both ends.

    Awesome build! I wasn't a big fan on that particular locking type of banana plugs when I reviewed them, I found them hard to tighten. What do you think after using them a while?

    • @user-wp9rq3kb6h
      @user-wp9rq3kb6h Před rokem +1

      If you mean difficult to access for tighten that maybe.
      Just a note for all. I know many people (myself included when I started) tend to over tighten the clamp/screw connectors flattening and crushing the conductors too much increasing the possibility of fracture and failure. Ultimately that really expensive thick cable you have bought could, quite literally, be hanging on and connected by just a few threads. It's best to buy a quality (not expensive) connector, find the correct torque settings and use a torque driver.
      This is also another reason for the strain relief to be added.

    You just blew my mind on the 4 conductor cable. 😁 I have actually run into this problem since I now have 4 cables running on hooks on my drop ceiling for my 7.1 setup. I can see this being very helpful for when I add in-ceiling on account of them being close to each other. What I am curious about is using this for the back speakers, but what can you use to hide colored cables once you split them up?

      This connection should not be solded at all that's why it has a screw clamp. It has two screws: one for the electrical connection and one for strain relief which should clamp the the wire and the sheathing if you can get the heat shrink over the wires and in to the strain relief clamp you can do that as long as the sheath is still gripped.
      Soldering in this situation can cause more problems than it solves; I've seen and repaired the failures cause by it.

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude
      @ThatHomeTheaterDude  Před 6 lety +1

      David Seals the lengths don’t matter. That’s the reason why you run calibration. It gives you speaker distances and adjusts the latency for the signal. I don’t foresee there being a need to have the same distances for speakers of such short distances. Use whichever length you need plus a little more just in case you ever move them.

      Rule of thumb, all front speakers same cable length, all middle speakers same cable length, all rear speakers the same length. That means the font middle and rear speakers can have different lengths as long as the groups have the same length. Though the reality is you won't notice a fractional difference in length. The calibration will take care of the required delay for your listening position.

      As someone who is qualified in electrical and electronc engineering and has done electronic/electrical assembly I can assure you that using the correct torque on the grub screw with adequate strain relief is the correct and most reliable way of makeing this connection.
      If a joint was intende to be soldered it would have a solder bucket or pad and no screw connection, except for the strain relief.
      Tinning the wire will make a clamp/crimp connection less reliable. Mains plugs do not and should not have tinned wires; the uk the wiring regs state you can not use soldered connection for mains as the heat cycling will cause a failure.

      There are two ways to avoid that situation. 1. To use a crimp-on ferrule to protect wire strands. 2. To use a wire clamp that has some metal plate between a screw and a wire and/or wire cage.
      But for any high current applications I prefer good crimping connection.

      adamcbowen1 audioquest speaker pants on amazon. They are a little pricey but they were on prime. You can get 10 for the price of 4 if you go off brand and don’t mind waiting for shipping.

    On your sub what are the levels on the sub and what are the levels on your amp. My SVS seems to be weak (receiver levels) -0. My sub levels are at -10

    Curious, are you happy with the 12 ga wire?

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude
      @ThatHomeTheaterDude  Před 6 lety +1

      12ga is plenty. You dont need more unless you're running really long (>50ft) per speaker. Whoever tells you differennt is trying to take your money. How you like the PC-2000? I like the idea of thee space saving. I have a tube in my car a long long time ago and it sounded great!

    • @mendiesel7932
      @mendiesel7932 Před 6 lety

      That Home Theater Dude I’m with you on the gauge myths. There is no discernible improvement on running thicker wire for short runs. I decided to go with some overkill though. Bought soow rated cable 10ga/4 conductor. Did basically the same thing you did and tech flexed it and used banana plugs. I have my towers bi-amped.However for me this was purely for aesthetics. My wires are totally exposed for about 2’ across the front wall in both directions and that super thick wire looks pretty cool compared to something a bit thinner.
      But yea I’m really happy with the pc2000s. As with everything that svs makes, they are top notch. It was the perfect balance of space conscious, sound, and WAF.
      Liking the videos. Keep it up. Would like to see an update on how you are liking the outlaws. Thinking of getting a 5000 and use it to run my center and bi amp my two mains. Again, overkill.

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude
      @ThatHomeTheaterDude  Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah outlaw videos were really popular I need to give them more love. If i were to do it over I would get 2 5000s instead of the arcam or maybe even the 7140. Glad you have a warrior spirit concerning overkill. I do too. Hence the Rambo knife and the Ka-Bar! haha.

    • @mendiesel7932
      @mendiesel7932 Před 6 lety

      That Home Theater Dude if I could post an image in this I’d show off the handy work with the wires.
      But them 2200 ain’t no slouch.. I’d do 4 of them bad boys in a heartbeat but for the money.. 5000s are sweet. That 7140 is pretty sweet too.

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude
      @ThatHomeTheaterDude  Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah obviously I would keeo my 2200s for the LCR just get two 5000s for every thing else. Who knows maybe I'll be going 13 channel in the future. Right now I only have 10 channels externally driven. So really i just use 2 internally driven speakers until I get more externals. Show them pics homie!

    under no circumstances turn the drill !!! what kind of people are they ?! you rip and stretch microwaves! don't believe me? take a marker and draw a line along the entire cable before twisting, and after twisting, make sure HOW the vein turned out a dozen times! Not only is it twisted, each cable is twisted with veins in one direction by the manufacturer, if you twist it yourself in the opposite direction, the weave will weaken and the air will get there and oxidize faster! And if you twist in one direction with the manufacturer, then the veins will simply break! didn't it come into the world by itself?

  • @MasterRandyHopkins

    Good video, but this thing about oxygen free copper producing less distortion is total nonsense. I am an electrical engineer and I'm telling everyone watching this video don't fall for the bullshit. The biggest concerned with running any speaker wire connection is total resistance. Unless you're running 100 plus feet speaker cable from your amplifier to the crossover voice coil Etc,there will be no noticeable difference in sound quality or power output. 14 gauge copper wire is sufficient... And no it doesn't matter if it's solidcore or braided. Don't fall for that bullshit either. Don't fall for all this pseudoscience nonsense when it comes to speaker cables and interconnects. Not saying that the host of this video Falls for all that, but when he mentions using oxygen free copper to get less distortion that makes me wonder.

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude
      @ThatHomeTheaterDude  Před 5 lety +1

      You get less resistance using OFC as comparred to CCA speaker wires. Thats all I was trying to say. If i said distortion then I misspoke.
