  • The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
    _______________________________________________________________
April 11, 2020 | Bob Boilen -- Every time I saw John Prine perform, he invited friends to join him. The outpouring of love and respect has always been so profound. And so when John Prine died on April 7 from complications related to COVID-19, I knew his friends and those he touched would want to pay tribute to him. Here are five artists performing their favorite John Prine tune in their home (or bathtub) in honor of one of the greatest songwriters of any generation.
    SET LIST
Margo Price and Jeremy Ivey, "That's the Way That the World Goes Round"
Courtney Marie Andrews, "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness"
    John Paul White, "Sam Stone"
    Nathaniel Rateliff, "All The Best"
Brandy Clark, "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness"

I remember hitching from Edinburgh to London about 93 maybe 94 and a guy stopped probably outside Carlisle in the north of England. He asked me to play a song. It was about 2 am, I started to play Hello in there. We sung the whole way to London, he was so happy I knew all the old classics. A lot of time has passed since then I've quit busking and traveling but moments like that don't happen by chance. I'm still in touch with that man to this day. When ever I go back home we'll still play hello in there together. Now his eyes are ancient and I'm about the age he was when we first met. My advice to any young kids learning to play a guitar is learn the old stuff. Those songs are your best friend.

I've left this comment on another video. I just love the heart felt comments from all the artists that are paying tribute to this great man. I'm a graphic designer and wish I could be a musician. John went to high school with my older brother and sis way back in the day...Proviso East in Maywood, IL. I did as well but graduated in 1982. Unfortunately my brother passed at 45 when I was 30. That was 25 years ago, but brother Bob introduced me to John and his music. I was fortunate to hear and see him at the Old Town School of Folk Music many times. GOD BLESS him, his music, his family.and all of you who love John!

I began listening to John Prine's music (for the first time, ever, and as performed by Prine, himself) at the same time I learned about his most recent hospitalization. I'd been familiar with the name but had never investigated beyond it. Within that very brief period of time...2 weeks, give or take...he has emerged as my favorite songwriter. While I feel fortunate to have eventually discovered him, I only wish it had occurred for me decades earlier. Had that been the case, I would have now been able to reflect on my own memories of seeing him perform live instead of posthumously. That really bums me out. Thanks, John...I'm sorry I was late.

You know the old saying... better late than 😊 Have fond memories of playing his music with friends, and Angel From Montgomery is out of sight. RIP John, you will be missed. Catch up with you in the next life.
This is one of my favorite tiny desk episodes, despite the tragic circumstances.

John left us such an amazing back catalogue - he will never be forgotten - and he has certainly made Travis picking cool again! Godspeed Handsome Johnny (I guess they did name a drink after you)...

Fantastic tribute to one of the greatest songwriters ever. I saw John quite a few times from a few weeks after his first album to after his last was released and NEVER got tired of being there. His humility was far above any other musician I've ever heard and his music was as well. When he died, I felt as if I had lost a life long friend having knowing who he was for almost 50 years and having the joy of feeling his music with every chord and lyric. I wish his family and friends well and want them to know what a differrence he made is so many people's lives. What a great person on top of everything else he was. I'll always miss him.

What terrific songs you all chose. I am moved by your presentations. What outstanding talents! It is so fitting that you have met John and played with him. That had to be the highlights of your singing careers. I am so happy for all of you. I am the same age as John Prine and I only discovered him a few months before he left us. Since I have found these cool ear pods . . . Ihave fallen asleep listening to his music almost nightly.

My favorite concert in my 63 years was John Prine and doctor john at F& M. College in Lancaster,Pa. Wicked blizzard delayed John arrival. Dr. John kept us entertained. John came out and told us the harrowing story of his drive though the blizzard in a VW drive. By a college student then said he won't be going anywhere for a awhile and played for hours. Heavenly. I swear he played every song in he had ever recorded. I will never forget that show.
