  • Danny Norman of Georgia is a world-class classic Ford tractors collector. One of the jewels of his collection is his 1951 Ford 8N with single front wheel. Several hundred 8Ns were converted by a firm in California to have this single front wheel conversion. They were designed for use in the cotton fields and for vegetable farmers. Danny shares the history on this tractor and talks about his passion for classic Ford tractors.

    I can still remember a man clearing the lot for the house I grew up in, somewhere around 1951 or '52, using a Ford tractor. Have loved them ever since.

    Is there no comment on this fellows Rail Car in his yard? That is a fellow who sees something he wants to preserve and gets it done.

    Cool looking machine... although with the kind of land I got here, I wouldn't be able to use that kind. My grandpa used to have a 4-wheel one with the front wheels close together and even that gave him fits on the uneven steep terrain; it would try to tip over sideways, and going uphill with a load on the back the front wheels wouldn't stay on the ground

    I ran a Allis Chalmers with one front tire rsking hay when I was around 14 in 74 on a what was at the time a good size freestall operation. That front tire would hit a woodchuck hole and the front end would jump up in the air a couple of feet and wake you up.

    This tractor would be a good candidate for a Sherman over/under add on transmission

    • @thepubliceye
      @thepubliceye Před 4 lety +1

      We had one of those, it was ordered by the county to mow ditches but never paid for, so an bought it a cost from the dealer.

    • @mwilliamshs
      @mwilliamshs Před 4 lety

      What specifically makes this tractor a good candidate for an auxiliary transmission?

    • @mattcanfield6384
      @mattcanfield6384 Před 3 lety

      To gear it down more and slow it down 8ns are to fast plus taller tires makes it worse

    Something really needs grease

      I kept hearing that too and was trying my best to zero in on what needed the grease.

  • @MrSupercar55

    Why is it that some old tractors, such as 8N Fords, only have one wheel on the front? Were they designed by Reliant or something?

    • @ih1440
      @ih1440 Před 4 lety

      Because you can turn on a dime and get a nickel back. The ability to turn sharp and quick is important on a tractor.
      The N series Ford tractors were not typically found as a tricycle tractor, this tractor is rare and is by far the exception rather than the norm for an N series Ford.
