During my quick road trip to Orlando, I hit up a several Caribbean spots since I was craving the food after my trip to Trinidad and Tobago! Come with me on my West Indian food tour, where I try Trini and Guyanese food!
Joining me was my friend Jon, a.k.a. DJ Jon Jat, who would be taking me to have West Indian food at spots all over the city!
    🌎 MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG: davidsbeenhere...
    👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: teespring.com/...
We started at Singh’s, a Trinidadian spot where we’d get to have some doubles and aloo pies! In the back, we met Angie, who showed us the cooks frying baras, curry for boneless chicken, and more!
After adding the chicken and chadon beni, it cooks for 30 minutes. Elsewhere, they were filling, rolling out, and grilling dal puri. I tried to do one myself!
They have tons of options: mac & cheese, Trini chow mein, jerk chicken, baked chicken, peas and rice, chana, dal, lo mein, egg balls, bacalao, beef curry, oxtail, curry chicken, curry shrimp, pulao, aloo pie, and more. It was a fusion of Indian, Chinese, and Caribbean cultures!
The doubles had a fluffy bara and sweet tamarind. Adding pepper sauce added a ton of spice! Jon’s aloo pie with beef. My aloo pie only contained chana, and adding tamarind made it sweet and savory!
I had a refreshing banana solo with it. Next, the dal puri was great with the shrimp curry. The oxtail was so tender it fell apart. It was great to mix everything together! The flavors and textures were unreal!
Next, we drove 10 minutes to Legends Resto & Lounge for some Chinese and Guyanese food. In the back, they showed us how they make their pineapple fried rice with shrimp and pork, lamb fried rice, lo mein, pepper lamb, pepper shrimp, and roast pork!
The roast pork and the sauce took me right back to my time in China. It was sweet and tangy! Meanwhile, the flavors of the pineapple had permeated the pineapple fried rice. It was too good!
The pepper shrimp were also massive and juicy. The pepper lamb was saucy and almost like the pork in terms of flavor, and the flavors in the lo mein blew me away.
I’d never seen lamb fried rice in my life, but it was unreal. It was so unique. I loved the short grain rice, the sauce, and the peppers. It wasn’t very spicy, but the sauce was very glazy. The fried rice dishes here were unbelievable!
Next, we drove back toward Singh’s to Bakewell Food Court, a Guyanese bakery that sells plait bread, sweets, tamarind balls, sugar cakes, and more.
There, Steve told us that it’s a food court concept and sells everything you could possibly want, from pizza and chicken to curries to sweets and breads!
We ordered a cassava pone and a salara. The cassava pone was a cassava cake, while the salara looked like a fluffy, sticky cake with sugar syrup on the outside and coconut on the inside.
The salara was layered and super sweet! It was like a coconut cinnamon roll, but with coconut. The cassava pone wasn’t as sweet, but was more like a banana bread. It would have been great with some ice cream on top!

David, are you sure there's no "indian" in your DNA? 😁 love how you embrace the culture from every country. It's true, once your taste buds are introduced to hot sauce, everything is bland without it. I admire how you experience this culture in It's true form. Your videos are truly enjoyable. Can't wait to see your videos from my birthplace, Guyana. I'm sure you will have a memorable experience.

Made curry chicken wrong. Believe me I live in trinidad. The chicken needs to be season with d curry and seasoning, and fried with d curry that burnt a little in the oil you can also put d seasoning to fry with d curry and oil before putting d chicken , keep turning a little until the fresh water from the chicken evaporate n the chicken starts to stick then you add water n cover

West Indian food definitely is the tastiest. As a Trinidadian now living in Canada, I couldnt get good trini food here unless I cook it myself ( but where's the fun in that) I'll never make a bad comment on someone who's not trini making trini food...a new place opened up in kitchener Ontario..Madhu's caribbean cuisine.. doubles and Roti...these people are from India and if I say the thing real best ....it's damn good! The chutneys, doubles, aloo pies, buss up shut and dhalpuri. The curries needs work not like true west Indian curry however I'm sure they will get there very soon. Each island has their own spin on west Indian favourites. And singhs looking real legit ...hope to try it someday!

West Indian food is NOT just a blend of Chinese and Indian, BUT also West African enslaved people who were brought to the Caribbean in the 1600s and up. This was before the Asian indentured workers of the 1800s. Jerk chicken origins in Jamaica 🇯🇲 (Black enslaved people perfected this type of cooking). Oxtail meat is also rooted in Afro-caribbean cultures. Please include us in this Caribbean food fusion since we, and our descendants make up the majority of the Caribbean. Which is also known as the West Indies because Christopher Columbus thought he found India, thus, giving birth to the Caribbean also known as the West Indies. Thank you😊!

Caramelized brown stews, Buljol and Pelau, Rice and beans are all Afro-Creole dishes but this is never mentioned. I am Trinidadian of multi racial ancestry and I am proud and thankful for all the cultures that contribute to our cuisine heritage.

Most of the world is aware the Caribbean has African, native, and European influences .. but most of the world is unaware of the rich ,diverse Asian culture of the southern half of the Caribbean.. It’s awesome that someone foreign is finally highlighting this .. what wrong with them having a moment?

    • @lizabetx483
      @lizabetx483 Před 2 lety +1

@@SexyBeautifulBabe How did you come to the conclusion that most of the world is aware of the African, Native and European influence on Caribbean food? The world is a big place and many persons have little knowledge of the Caribbean. Proper food journalism must be accurate and balanced and if your video title is "West Indian food tour" then your content must reflect what your purport to showcase. And it is not a moment. Watch the entire series on Trinidad and Tobago food done by David and his country host Chef Jason and then you will be suitably informed. The Afro-Creole food origins is hardly explained when Afro-Creole food is showcased and those explanations that are given are insufficient and at times incorrect. The care Chef Jason took to explain the history and origin of East Indian Trinbagonian food is not equally applied to the Afro-Creole Trinbagonian food. Either Chef Jason is ignorant of the food history or intentionally vague in his contributions. Neither of the two possibilities that I just mentioned are acceptable stances for a professional Chef/Culinary Show Host. I took the time to observe, reflect and then make informed comments on this video series.

You should definitely visit RS53 RestoBar & Lounge while you’re in Guyana! It’s the Former West Indies Cricketer Ramnaresh Sarwan’s restaurant.

Haven't been to Singh's in years. Wasn't really satisfied with the food last time I was there. Found Legends restro last year and their jerk pork is the tastiest in Orlando. Food is really good at Legends.

David: you are showing people how to really enjoy eating food. I am drooling with every bite. Everything looks so delicious. Personal note: I don't like high-falutin fine dining restaurants because it looks like they spend a lot of time making everything look nice that you don't know whether to look at the food or eat it. These kinds of take-out restaurants and diners are the best. Suggestion for you: please do a show where you eat at diners only. I love these shows in Miami. Keep it up and looking forward to seeing your videos of your trip to Guyana. Safe travels and God's speed.🇹🇹🇨🇦

@@Davidsbeenhere they make everything look pretty and the food has to be a certain height on the plate🤣🤣🤣. Plus they don't wash and clean and season the food like we do in the Caribbean (West Indies). So keep enjoying our food. You are a great AMBASSADOR for Trini cuisine. GOD bless you and your beautiful family as always.

Guyanese Chinese food is the best, the type of Chinese sauce they use is really really flavorful.

The salara looks good, nice and soft, not everybody knows how to make the pastry for the salara. Personally I do not go to take out restaurant or restaurant and buy different types of curries and dishes that are cooked in advance , especially when they looked dry on top, that means it has been sitting in those containers forever. They should prepare all roti , bust up shots and dhalpourie as you place your order. All they need to do in advance is have the dough ready. I think junk food restaurant always prepares their food in front of you, why can’t they.
