    The value the fire service provides is insurmountable and in some ways cannot be quantified. Firefighters are helping others every day on the job and contributing towards a greater good and safety of our future. Especially as we grow as a more technological society, the role of the fire service and the sense of community we realize how special this really is. 41.8% of volunteer firefighters have 10 plus years of active service, and 49% of the US population is protected by all career fire departments, which are both statistics that show how passionate and dedicated of an industry it is. There are many unique ways in which to grow and contribute within a department. We thank everyone who is a part of the fire service for all that they do.

    Well done to all brave firefighters worldwide (which nowadays is, I feel a term that does not do these guys justice.) Yes they put out the most ferocious fires nature can throw at them, from a raging bushfire started most probably through careless tobacco use, to home fires, risking life and limb to save anyone (or anything) as even if the humans are safely out, they will go back in to save PETS! a life is a life, and a firefighter does not care what species that life takes. However they now do SO much more. They risk their lives to rescue people (and pets) from freezing water, attend highly dangerous gas and chemical incidents, Provide safety advice to homeowners, rescue people who are trapped after a vehicle crash with their greatest tool, the 'jaws of life', rescue people in perilous situations such as becoming stranded on a small cliff ledge, and yes, if all else fails, after 24 hours, they will get your cat out of a tree. They also rescue cats from dangerous places such as rooftops or puppies from sewers etc. I feel they need a name which not only covers putting out fires, but ALL the HEROIC and often dangerous work they do.

    firefighters dont have "oxygen packs" its just plain compressed air. you put compressed oxygen in a super heated area what happens?

    • @hammerlane3871
      @hammerlane3871 Před 10 lety +2

      not "put" per say. but the ones im talking about are open-circuit SCBA apparatus, which have filtered, compressed air instead of pure oxygen. thats why most departments only allow like 3-4 bottles during a fire. i mean it may have some oxygen but thats what i understood from the training class

    • @440s
      @440s Před 10 lety

      Mitch S actually you only should use 3 or 4 cilinders per fire cos that air is dry air...and why is air an not only O2? well there is a reason why 18% to 22% of O2 is pre-seated in our gases meters..

    I'm a firefighter here in Ontario. I noticed when he was showing some of the equipment on the truck he referred to one piece as a "horizontal standpipe". I've never heard it called that before, here in Canada we call them a "Gated wye connection". Is that what you call them in the US, or was that just a simple mistake?............ Stay safe out there brothers!

    Pure Oxygen is never carried into a fire. Oxygen bottles can be found in Ambulances, however, if someone is lacking the proper oxygen they need. If there is a leak, the fire will feed off the leak in the canister.

    Being a firefighter is more than that. Please take my bunker gear, I would like too see your opinion after you do any call, either it be a medical, crash, fire, or Pub. Ed. I love my job and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. I do it to make a difference in someones life. If it's saving someones life from fire, or getting a child's cat out of a tree, at the end of the day I helped someone. Please do not disregard someone until you've been in their shoes. Have a nice day. Keep safe.

    Don't get me wrong here, a thousand degrees is pretty damn hot, but I'don't expect those jackets to with stand a max or min of 2,000 degrees. As a welder, heavy duty leather welding jacket is you best friend especially dealing with temperate that easily exceed 6,000 to way past 10,000 degrees if you don't watch it. As I'm becoming a firefighter, I'm realizing more and more, my leather jacket is really my best friend.

    Breathing pure (or perhaps more accurately higher than normal concentrations of) oxygen can kill you but this is often as an indirect effect of a condition known as oxygen toxicity. For example divers breathing pure oxygen from a tank can lose conciousness and drown as a result of this. It is actually lack of oxygen through drowning that has killed them but the oxygen toxicity that induced the unconsciousness that caused this.

    I was interested in becoming a Firefighter, but after reading many stats online, the percentage of cancer is high, obviously much much higher than the general public. This is something that scares me. They even say that the stats on firefighter cancers are much higher than recorded stats because most cancers are diagnosed after firefighter retire and this is not recorded in the stats. What is your take on this?

      I am currently a volunteer firefighter and I can say is dont let the aspect of something might happen with the new technology that we have today with better scba the cancer rates in the fire service are so much lower of even a decade ago it's more that you need to look out for yourself and make sure that you always take precautions for safety. But try it out volunteer or join a bunk in program to experience not just the job but the life style it can be so rewarding if you put your mind to it.

    You call a firefighter and a paramedic a firefighter/paramedic there's a 1970's show called EMERGENCY! about that. I wanted to be one ever since i saw EMERGENCY! Firefighter/paramedic Roy DeSoto A.K.A (Kevin Tighe) < (real name) is always driving a pickup truck looking paramedic emergency vehicle called Squad 51 in a present day fire station to this moment in the city of carson california station 127. And i think once each month they put the rescue vehicles in front of the station and let you look around and go in the station it's a big event there. Here is a list of main characters...(paramedics) Firefighter/paramedic Roy DeSoto. Firefighter/paramedic John Gage. (firefighters) Firefighter Chet Kelly. Firefighter Marco Lopez. Firefighter/engineer Mike Stoker. captain Hank Stanley. I forgot to mention anther real place called rampart general hospital here are some characters there...Head doctor Kelly Brackett.i'll finish this later

    Try that and tell me how that actually works out for you.. Normally you breath 2-6% oxygen not pure oxygen.. I know what the fuck I'm talking about.. You breath 100% pure oxygen from a bottle and tell me how that feels..
