Following the London Fire Brigade and its every day heroes as they respond to a whole range of emergencies.
In this third episode, 54-year-old Crew Manager Aldo is about to retire. He’s handing over the baton to graduate Joe - a 25-year-old rookie who is learning the ropes and living out his childhood dream of becoming a firefighter. After completing training, Joe is put to the test when he has go into a burning house and fight his first fire. It’s a challenging fire in an attic room with difficult access and the potential to create a lethal backdraft.
In Brixton fire station, firefighter Josie is called to a fire in a top floor flat which is filling with smoke. Unable to see anything inside, she needs to use a specialist thermal camera to locate the flames.
Despite all their best efforts, the London Fire Brigade can’t always reach every fire in time...

That was just what it was like, did this for 27 years and most days were good, not predictable that's the best aspect of this job. And the pension is great, retire at 52 and you are still healthy enough to have a good life. I am glade to see they have some good kit at last. Best wishes for all of the boys and girls now serving. Interesting to see the standard procedures of the LFB. I’m kind of shocked at seeing non SCBA firefighters and officers so close or inside a structure fire, also I didn’t notice any packed up firefighters wearing hoods. The procedures are definitely different than U.S. SOPs that I’m use to seeing. God speed and Stay Safe, LFB!!

18:43 A wrong move, even after arriving at Hospital can still end in someone becoming disabled. I was caught in a property fire once. Closest thing to Hell on earth I have ever experienced. In a heartbeat you cannot see your hand in front of your face for black smoke. The heat and smoke affects every part of your body. Externally and internally. Forget about trying to breath properly until you can get away from the smoke. If you cannot get out, in a matter of seconds you become confused and disorientated. Always, always have working smoke alarms and an escape plan. Prevention, is a great defence against fire too. Surge protection for plugs and electrical devices is a must also. Most fire departments offer free home safety checks last I heard.

Woman shouldn't be in the job... That was when it started going down hill. They took away a LOT of the entry requirements in the 1990s. "Minimum height" was discriminatory, basic strength tests "favoured males".
Merseyside where this was filmed ended up employing a number of short arses, including women around 5 ft tall who could NOT reach the equipment in the top shelves of the lockers.... so at a cost of over 1 million pounds to the taxpayer, the equipment stowage on the ENTIRE fleet of engines was adapted to have special "drop down shelves" so the midgets could reach the equipment on them....
The "seven dwaves" had difficulty climbing up into the cabs and so as the fire authority replaced the fleet of engines in phases, all the new engines had to have expensive "drop down" pneumatic suspensions fitted to lower the cab steps so they could climb in.
      I kid you not !!!
They even had 2 women who were so short that the standard BA sets, with their adjustable backplates, could not be shortened enough to fit their tiny female frames and so at CONSIDERABLE public cost the brigade commisioned the manufacturers (Draeger of Germany) to build two specially adapted BA sets to be personally issued to the two women in question !!!
I worked with a number of the women and it was often embarrasing watching them struggling with heavy equipment or jammed couplings, and if you offered to help you'd be scowled at for being "patronising". "The Job" went to ratshit after all that.
I await the day when they fit hydraulic "chair lifts" to the fire engine crew cabs, because after all, who are you or I to step on the dreams of a wheelchair bound paraplegic who wants to be a fireman?
Take me back to these days.
