Explaining the Amish Way of Life - VOA Story

  • Not far from the hustle and bustle of city life live the Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. These deeply religious people shun the conveniences of modern society to live a simpler life where transportation is a horse and buggy and horsepower really means horsepower.
The Amish are very devout and take seriously the biblical commands to separate themselves from the things of the world including electricity. Power comes from propane, kerosene, wood, coal, or natural gas.
As the world around the peaceful farmland changes, so have some of the traditions of the Amish. Transportation is no longer limited to horse-drawn buggies. "There is a division among the Amish over the automobile. One group got automobiles, another group kept the horse and buggy. we just simply name them old order -- drive the horse and buggy, and the new order -- drive the automobiles. They have electric, they have meeting houses and they don't have green shades."
But many traditions remain. Amish children attend one-room schoolhouses through grade eight and farming is the mainstay of Amish life. There are normally two horses on a farm for buggies. Several mules are kept for farming. Milking is one of the most important sources of income on the farm.
Many Amish leaders believe their separation from the outside world strengthens their community. And that community is thriving. Despite what many on the outside would describe as a backwards lifestyle, the Amish population in Lancaster County has almost tripled over the past half century.

    Part 1
I am amish and when I was a boy I didn't know this modern way of life existed until one day a stranger walked into our village asking for directions and I noticed his vehicle he drove and his clothes he wore were different to ours so I asked him about it he explained. As I grew up I asked my parents about the modern life they said to me it’s an evil way to live, those thoughts were evil and I should never think them but I was still curious.

It's so wonderful & so refreshing, to watch such an upload & to learn more about the Amish people & their way of life. Please always keep your traditions & beliefs alive. Such a way of life, should never be lost. Your sense of family & community is so strong. It makes me realise, how detached & isolated, for a large part, most of us non-Amish people are. We non-Amish, can really get caught up in all things material, yet for the Amish it's all about real human ties, family ties, the family unit, the community spirit & connection, that you all care about & are focused on. I have an immense respect & appreciation for the Amish people & their way of life. I can only aspire to be as good as they are. I want so much, the strong marital & family values that they possess, when i get married & have my own family. I think it's very unique, special & beautiful. Although i consider myself a strong, modern & independent woman, i'm not too pig headed or proud to admit, that there is something very simple, organic, amazing, pure & wonderful, regarding the Amish way of life. :-) God bless you all & thank you for sharing your way of life with us.

Thursday night while setteling down in an Amish barn for the night the man who owned the property brought us (7 of us) a gallon of FRESH MILK and a loaf of fresh bread........then my silly friend accepted an offer for some yogurt.......to much for the 7 of us to all consume, especially since some of us did not like yogurt. A great experience. Kind of magical. Then Friday morning we visited the father-in-law and his family 4 miles away.......about a 3 hour chat on their back porch.

Despite what you might think of the Amish, if the economy ever collapsed or if society breaks down for whatever reason, they will be the only ones left. All I know is that last night we lost power for about 2 hours and I went nuts! Suddenly it dawned on me, my life, my friends and family's lives are so intertwined and so dependent with the modern world that it really has us at its mercy now. I don't even own a fishing pole to catch my own fish if I had too. Pretty scary when you think about it.

The Baumgardner family farm museum was open until recently in Ohio and had not changed in so long, it was educational. Much of our land was seized from us by the govt 100 years ago, we had to go to cities & were modernized & impoverished. I guess I gave the land back to the First People. Uprated and shared.

They're reserved, not so much up-tight. But the father in-law to the man who owned the barn was really cool, not up tight at all. What I find interesting in Religion is in the past how they were treated by people that didn't take the time to know them. You have the Amish, LDS, Jews, Catholics and Jesus himself. So many people have been hurt or even killed for their believes. I was able to spend a day with the Amish and it was a great experience for me.

In the USA up till about 1910 most schools only went to the eighth grade and that was as high as you could go. Even though they only had 8 grades the work was very accelerated. They fit 12 years information into 8 years of schooling. As proof, if you can ever find antique text books from 1900 you would see that 8th grade work was very advanced
