- Similar to the Amish, the Mennonites, an ultra-conservative Christian community, vehemently reject the trappings of modern society, choosing instead to embrace a life frozen in the 19th century. The majority of Mennonites reside in self-sufficient colonies, deliberately isolating themselves to shield against the temptations of the contemporary world. Now, breaking from their tradition of seclusion, one such community has granted access to our cameras.
Upon entering the colony of Little Belize in South America, it becomes evident that time has come to a standstill. Residents traverse the area in horse-drawn carriages, conversing in Plattdeutsch, an ancient German dialect. However, even within this seemingly untouched enclave, external influences are making inroads. Wilhelm, the former community doctor, faced expulsion for possessing a mobile phone, reflecting concerns about the encroachment of the outside world. Fearing contamination, traditional members like Abram and his family embark on establishing a new, even more secluded colony in the jungles of Peru, striving to uphold their original doctrines.
We accompany them on their exodus, providing an unprecedented glimpse into the enigmatic world of the Mennonites as they navigate the delicate balance between preserving their traditions and confronting the inevitable influences of the changing times. - Zábava
My grandparents lived next to a Mennonite family. They were the sweetest people. We played with the kids when we visited. They loved basketball! They really help my grandparents with a lot of things. When grandpa passed they took care of grandma until she moved up north with us. Rare to have neighbors like that today.

Really enjoyed this but very conscious of the irony of the group moving to a remote location to stay away from modern civilisation and have a simpler life while taking 3 planes and being followed by a film crew 😂. They all seem so genuinely content, it’s beautiful to see

I'd be concerned about living so far from a hospital or medical care, especially when pregnant and having babies and kids. They can get sick and go downhill quickly without quick medical help.
That's the main thing that would concern me. I hope they at least know the basics of health care, and brought medicines with them.
They don't have many of the ailments that plague city people.

Man, I need more than that. I want a five year series. I want to know how they handle real world problems. Disease sex pregnancy and death firstly. I can't imagine women giving birth and then there are complications. I want to know how they handle those that want more in life. It doesn't matter how far away you live, you know that there is another world out there. These thoughts may be suppressed or hidden but the desire will still burn in some.

Ja, den Gesichtern ( Franz zum Beispiel) sieht man den holländischen Einschlag voll an. Es ist sicher ein aus der Zeit gesprochenes Platt, gemischt mit entsprechendem Deutsch und Niederländisch.

One Peru colony (not the one detailed in this video) are also being sued for impeding on indigenous land. The main guy from this video is also being sued for "Misuse of Agricultural Land". I knew he was an idiot when he picked up soil from a road and was like "Yup, this is perfect for crops"

I was raised in exactly the same way in a Mennonite family and I can assure you folks that it is not as sad as you think 🧐 😊and you can see it on their faces too they’re happy and full of joy 😊
We as kids had a lot of fun playing and working. Our whole families were very happy.
These people do complain a little bit but that’s just because you’re asking them. Once you’re gone they’ll be busy working away joyfully.

I love to strip off my jewelry and makeup and dress in long dresses with sleeves when visiting to show utmost respect. These communities are very welcoming and the people are kind and loving. Respect is given and shown❤

This is really kind of amazing. We have a mennonite community here in my german hometown too - but their life is far from anything comparable. Compared to the community in the video their life seems modern, almost average. To be honest, I have my problems with the idea of western people settling in the Amazon. Because this is the ancient way of colonization and the destruction of the Rain Forest is one of the greatest threats to native peoples and human kind as a whole, since this is the green lung of the world and so important with regards to climate aspects.

It's true that white people have a penchant for homesteading, i.e. colonizing. But it's not the small communities of people like Mennonites that are devastating rainforests. It's mega corporations and corrupt governments.

I wonder if anybody can share how they deal with Autism or other special needs. I'm a teacher and it was odd to see a class that large where there didn't seem to be any special needs- are there fewer cases or are they just not in school?
I think I heard that they don't have much autism. Suggesting that it may come from a more modernized environment. A test showed autism is 8 times more prevalent in Americans than in Amish communities. That said, Mennonites are supposed to be more modernized than the Amish.
They don't eat processed foods and seed oils, which contribute significantly to behavioral problems, special needs, and autism.

Ill children likely get bred with violence to act normal without any respect for their needs. The number of mentally affected people of a society is heavily influenced by the openness to such problems. To think that autism doesn't exist there is like watching Nord Korean TV and thinking everybody is happy there.

yeah a lot of religious requirements are just determined to be "good enough". Like how in islam, followers should be only eating animals killed in a specific halal way but a lot of muslims don't bother with that since it's hard to find depending on where you live. The rule was made when mass animal farming didn't exist so you can rationalise it as doing the best you can. Probably the same with these mennonites

The mennonites I knew were allowed to drive cars and have modern utilities in their homes. I rode with a lady when I was a teen that had electricity in her home and drove me in her car there. They dressed similar to Amish but weren’t as strict with their home lives as they are. The Amish people in USA sound similar to the mennonites on this program. Does anyone know why the description is not referred to as Amish? The only reason I can think is it’s another country they live in so they are referred to differently depending on area of world they live in.

I think the people of Nedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and other northern German regions would disagree that Plattdüütsch is only spoken by these Mennonites.
Honestly though, I almost envy these people. They work hard and live simple lives, they're surrounded by their kin and they are kind. I bet they live happier lives than a lot of people in the modern world.

There are a lot of versions of Bibles and each one is so convenient for the one who prints them and makes sure that these words do not deviate anywhere.

It may be worth mentioning that unlike the amish, relatively few mennonites still live this way. Most oft them are just as more or less open minded as other christians.

The Mennonites unfortunately are causing quite some damage in the Amazon by removing primary forest for their farmland. And there are many questions as to whether they were sold protected land that should never have been sold. The reality of what is going on there is not as rosy or simple as this film makes it look like. Which really is not what I wanted to learn.

Can we get an update on these families? This video wasn’t uploaded too long ago but it takes a while plan out a longish term trip with them especially if they are still in the amazon. Personally if they moved to the amazon jungle i think their dead.
I looked it up and they were accused of deforestation without permits by the local authorities. They might lose their land.
Having 7 to 12 children for each married woman sounds horrible to me.

Меня удивило количество пластика и потребностях в вещах "современных". Всю посуду можно изготовить из дерева, если такого нет - из глины. Матрасы из соломы или пуха/перьев. Самостоятельно делать ткани из крапивы, льна, хлопка и тд. Лекарства из трав и тд, а не таблетки из аптеки. Хоть они и живут по старым принципам, но как будто бы не правильно
как вы описали мало кто может жить, есть такие общины и в РФ и в Европе, но в основном все уже чем то современным да пользуются. Разве что какие то еще дикие племена на островах остались или где то в глубинах африканского континента

There are alot of Mennonites in the states of Chihuahua and Durango Mexico. Been there for year's. The Mennonites are some hard working people. They own alot of land and big factories they are really rich.
Also they make some good cheese! 🧀

Its a small community. They are poor but self sufficient. Its easier to have order in community like this, there is no specialisation and everyone can produce their own goods (so no starving children)

Sorry, but "Plattdeutsch" isn't only used by the Mennonites, it's a dialekt spoken by some people in Northern Germany, a dialekt that in some aspects is really close to Dutch. It's a part of Northern Germanys Culture. It's just because most people speaking "Platt" can speak without the dialekt as well, that it's rarely justed for everyday commicantion.
I feel bad for these people. What horrible indoctrination, but I would however like to live life simply. I wouldn’t mind living in a cottage in the middle of a forest with nothing but the bare minimum. ❤

Most of the Amish don’t have hydro and don’t drive vehicles, and the men have beards. Most Mennonites have hydro, drive vehicles and taught against having beards. That pretty much sums it up.
