- The new Ritchey Ascent is a renegade dirt touring gravel / mountain bike with no desire to be categorized. Best left undefined, it rips trails like a mountain bike, and ticks off paved miles like a road bike.

Glad you enjoyed the bike, Nolan! It looks like you have some pretty good testing ground for a bike like the Ascent. Also, happy to see you’re healing up well.
I purchased the ascent and have been having a really great time with it. It's offered me an alternative to the many gravel bikes I've owned over the past few years. I took the parts from my Salsa Fargo and swapped them over to the ascent to start then later added in a set of simsworks nitto fun 3 bars and an apex trigger shifter (compatible to the drop bar brifters and derailleur) so the swap was fairly easy. This is my first set up with fenders and a basket. The ride has certainly chilled out but it's been a great tool to explore forgotten urban roads and cutty little park trails in my area. Quite honestly, it's refreshing to just have something unique added to the fleet to swap around and enjoy the day as it comes. This is my tool to make a conscious effort to reduce my driving and push myself to ride my bike to local destinations. This bike is so fun it's made the efforts of my lifestyle change a real joy. Cheers
all i need is the fenders and rack
Hello! How does the bine compare to your Fargo? I am having trouble deciding between the two. I like the Ascent more for it’s looks and compliance and like the Fargo for it’s versatility.
@@Edgar_84 hi - depends on what you’re looking for. I think the Fargo is a go farther off road type of setup. It’s More upright and If you’re planning to do major trips I’d go fargo - if you’re only going to do the occasional trip and mostly enjoy longer rides I’d go ascent. The ritchey is more fun imo - I’d compare it more to a capable touring bike than a rugged off roader - tho it can do some of that too.
For several months, I was leaning heavily toward picking up a new Outback (literally had it in my cart several different times on the Ritchey website) but also considered some other steel rigs such as the Salsa Vaya or one of several different Surly frames (already own a Karate Monkey) or even a custom steel bike. Then I remembered yours and Russ's reviews and slowly it began to dawn on me that the Ascent just might be what I was searching for. Anyway, after several months of pouring over specs and comparing to other bikes, I pulled the trigger and picked up a medium "Desert Dust" Ascent. I'm stoked about it as I go about acquiring components for the build. Don't care that it's a little on the heavy side. As a bigger rider, for me it's about comfort, stability, and durability.
Man that desert dust color is nice! Congrats!
Great review!
New cable cherries en route
I built up an ascent this winter! I choose to lean heavy into the mtb aspect of the bike with burly ibis 738 wheels, hydro brakes, and 2.4 tires. I run crust jungle runners for handling and 1x11 nx for the drivetrain. I bike to and from my local mtb trails and find my ride understandably sluggish due to my tire choice and riding position. However on single track the bike shines bright. The bike feels strong and unaffected by east coast root covered trails and even handles tabletops when I’m feeling daring. I was definitely more sore than my friends on full suspension bikes, but I never felt that the bike was outclassed by what I threw at it. I have a bikepacking event in Italy (Tuscany trail) that I’m heading to in a couple of weeks, I’ll be utilizing every braze on offered on this frame which I am very appreciative of. So far this bike has fulfilled my mtb and bikepacking needs in one fell swoop.
I built one up 2X9 with a Riv Silver crank, Deore derailleurs/ Riv bar end shifters, Hunt XC wheels, RH 29x2.2" knobbies, Venturemax drop bars. Great bike. Comparing to Jones complete and Riv Susie Longbolts the Ascent is much lighter and more fun to ride on pave or gravel. I think Nolan's review is spot on. Very fun bike that is excellent on chunky gravel or flowy singletrack. I do technical singletrack with it too, but slower, which is fine for me. I also throw on clip on fenders and a front rack for commuting. Very versatile bike that is really fun on dirt.
How did you incorporate a Riv Silver crank into a boost spacing situation? I want to do the same (shifting will be friction). What bottom bracket? What size chainrings are you using? Thank you.
After reading your BQ article I can't wait!!!
🤘
Any time I feel like I am able to do a well thought out, smart sounding review; I will reference this video to bring me back down to earth.
That’s crazy talk. Thx for making my day 🤘
Tom Ritchey is an accomplished rider. He's ridden all kinds of terrain. His bikes never really wow you. The frames are not flashy but practical and I think that comes from years of riding. I think Jeff Jones is another designer/rider who knows bikes. I ask the question, do we really need all these different bike brands? How different can they be? Kudos to Tom Ritchey and Jeff Jones.
I have a Road Logic. My favorite Road bike. Dura Ace . Deep dish Dura Ace carbon wheels. My newer Madone and others hang in the garage. I'm done with carbon bikes. I like traditional frame design . My Madone is Ugly. My Ritchey has bars, stem ,seatpost, seat all Ritchey. Fun to ride and light
@@Mosely2007 I wanted to love my Road Logic and in many ways I did, but ended up selling it after several years (and kept my carbon cannondale synapse as my sole road bike). Two reasons--the geo on the Road Logic is too race oriented for me and I don't like riding on anything smaller than 35mm tires. Still, it was a magnificently crafted steel rig that I hated having to part ways with it. Flip side, I used that money to pick up a new Ascent.
Sigh... My partner needs a new bike. Looks like it'll be a 3rd Ritchey in the garage. This is getting expensive! :-)
great review thanks, any friend of Russ is a friend of mine, love the Ritchey with the wide bars, so cool
Thanks! This bike design is high on my list! It's between this and a hardtail as my only bike option... but I'm leaning heavily towards a 27.5+ hardtail, which comes in around the same weight...
It has hybrid bike geometry. For all the folks who turn up their nose to hybrid bikes- prediction: everyone’s going to be raving about this geometry as the great new ‘gravel’ trend in the coming years.
very interesting bike kinda gravel bike and ridged mountain bike mixed into one
Spot on!
Like this video. I ride a Ritchey Road Logic on pavement. Wonderful bike. This is next. My Diverge has been beat to death after 75k of gravel.
Dang. Now I gotta get an ATB. That looks like a ton of fun!
Nice review. How do you think this would be with some ReneHerse 29X2 slicks for a commuter to work. All paved roads. Then hit some gravel and easy trails on the weekend? Currently riding a CO-Motion. Love the ride, only can fit a 38mm tire. So gravel roads beat you up. Thanks.
Dreamy..
can you climb a steep hill out of the saddle using these flat bars? it seems that both your hands and your weight will be way beneath the front wheel axle
i use the giant talon frame in medium size with 29" wheels and 2x7 gearing ... rise adjustable stem and full lighting system . with fm radio and spongy grips
Nice video. Any ideas on sizing - I am a fraction under 6ft, standover in my shoes around 82cm, so am thinking of going for a medium... will that be long enough? I will run drop bars so should be OK?
I need this bike! What a beauty
Sizing feedback please. Do you think you preferred the flat bar cos it felt "big" with drop bars on a medium. Do you think a small is too small for you?? Im on a medium outback. Stuck on sizing for ascent. Any help appreciated 🙏
will go up in value the longer you hav it
Can u install the cf adventure fork into this frame?
Enjoyed the review. Thank You. What are those cool bottle cages?
Looks like a really awesome bike. This isn't directed at you BikeSauce, I enjoy your takes and you're open minded. But, Surly made this years ago with the Ogre and the party pace cult is always, "Surly is so heavy". But slap a Ritchey logo on it and the same people are all about "prioritizing comfort" (yes I realize the old Ascent is a decade spanning label, we're talking the modern iteration). Its just funny to me. Bontrager should have said, "Hipster, cool, retro-grouch; pick 2"
The surly ogre weighs 33lbs though, so it is a pretty substantial fella
Wonder how this compares to the surly lowside or bridge club.
@@lanceruss5572 those are both ~30 lbs
@@MrJonas2255 Total weight is meaningless and a misleading comparison, esp when one of the two cannot even be bought as a full bike. 95% of a bike is consumable. The only way to compare is the framesets. There's less than 1lbs difference between the estimated frameset weights. So, the Ascent is every bit as porky. And you trying to single out the Surly in this way is exactly proving of my point.
Great review and happy to see a SoCal'er reviewing the Ascent. I am trying to imagine the Ascent in the Santa Monica Mountains where I mostly ride. Some of the mountains' trails are tricky. A lot of loose over hard, rutted, and at times steep. I don't ride fast but I am looking for assurance in those sections. Any thoughts on the Ascent in those situations?
I’d say ideal for trails like dirt Mulholland and Sullivan canyon. Next level would just be full on hardtail mtb, which might be overkill
I really enjoyed and learned alot. Thank you.! I'm thinking of getting this frame and using parts I have for now and slowly changing things out as needed. My wonder is if my parts, particularly 700c wheels and a compact road double work on it? Can you enlighten? Thanks in advace.
Thx! Unlikely. Wheel spacing is boost and bb is 73mm. It’s essentially built to mtb standards.
Have you reviewed the Ritchey Road Logic? I’d love to have an overview between this, Outback and road logic based on your experiences. Love your channel
Thx, James! Haven’t had any time on the road logic or the Swiss cross. I am interested in both however
What is the weight limit for touring? Front & Rear? Thanks.
Good stuff! Can I ask how did you find the handling of the flat vs. drop bars? Did you prefer one over the other? Cheers
Flat/alt bars were more relaxed / upright. A fun experience, but drop bars felt more efficient and fast
Hey! I know I'm late to the party on this one but I love the review and I love Russ' review as well. I'm currently riding a 2018 Fargo in a small size. The Ascent seems so close to the Fargo with modern updates and Ritchey design. I'd love to get one. Here's my question: you rode the Medium? How tall are you? In looking at the two on bikeinsights, I'm afraid to size up from my small fargo to the Medium Ascent. I thought I'd ask. Thanks again.
5’8” on a good day. Inseam roughly 29-30”? Short legs..
Okay, great. Thank you. The medium didn't feel too stretched out for you? I'm about 5'7" on a good day as well with a 30-31" inseam. Appreciate your videos and your correspondence. I guess you liked the outback better since you just built up a 50th anniversary edition. So sweet.
I did not feel too stretched out on the med ascent. Ha, yes ultimately went with the outback build. I think it suits my preferences a bit better
New to the channel here just wanted to say I really appreciate this review. I come from a long background of BMX and MTB but for the 2nd time this season had a really bad crash on my MTB which ended up breaking my knee and shoulder (surgery for both and had to have surgery from the crash earlier this season) so at the ripe age of 40 I’ve decided to quit serious mountain biking for the sake of my marriage and emotional trauma to my wife and kids. But I love to ride and love bikes so I’m looking for something to fill the gap. I’ve been thinking about getting into the gravel scene, as well as riding our extensive network of rails to trails and green flow trails.
The guys at my LBS recommended me building a drop bar Ascent. If this was an only bike do you think it’d do good double duty on road and gravel as well as the occasional foray into some fast flowy green trails?
Thanks again!
Welcome! Yea I think that’s exactly what the ascent was designed for
@@TheBikeSauce sweet. Thanks for the response!
Love the video! I'm considering buying an Ascent, but having trouble deciding between a small vs. medium frame. I'm 5'6. Is there any guidance that you could offer having ridden the bike? Thank you.
I’m 5’8” and the medium was a really good fit. Not too big or too small. I’d say if you’re used big mtbs with (full suspension 29er) , then a medium ascent would suit you fine. A small ascent may feel a bit tight, but that’s just my $0.02
@@TheBikeSauce Thanks for your response! Very helpful. I really enjoy your channel!
Professor Sauce is this new video real time riding? Are you back on after your crash? I saw you making a pass across the railroad tracks made me think about how you were doing.
All riding footage was taken before I crashed haha. Just took me a while to form my thoughts and put together a decent video
How tall are you riding a size M? Inseam? Thanksss!
About 5’8”, 29-30 inseam
Did somebody have the color code code. I have this bike but there are some color scratches
Email Ritchey. They’ll help you out
Didn’t get any answer 😞😞😞
Can I ask how tall you are? Looking at the same bike.
About 5’8”
😊
Would you buy one?
I’d consider this or the Outback
@@TheBikeSauce exactly my problem......(not really a problem). The ascent would potentially replace my AWOL, giving more tyre clearance. But 2.1 on the awol is pretty good....
no. i would rather do a custom build ... ask me about my rig
Put some BMX bars on that
🤘🤘
80's self build lol
The early 90s called, they want their mountain bike back
..aand there it is
nah , thats 80's hybrid hard core hahahaaaaa
No, Renegade is another bike ^_^
'25lbs is pretty light for a mountain bike'...who are you trying to kid?
Gravel bikes weigh more than mountain bikes these days, and you get more value with a mtb.
Ritchey bike frames are heavy, they do not do light, it's not a priority for them.
Still, it is a lovely bike, but I couldn't live with the weight, it's just too heavy for me.
