  • Growing Broad beans is a great way to ensure an early harvest that isn't just salads and other early maturing vegetables.
You can direct sow or module sow them. Sow the seeds quite deep in late autumn early winter (October to January).
Once established two things to remember:
    - Stake the plants or provide supports to prevent pod heavy stems following over as the beans develop
    - Black fly will attack your beans. There isnt a great deal you can do to stop them but pinching out the growing shoots and physically removing the black fly when you see them should help control/slow the spread.
The beans are ready to harvest when the pods are approximately 5 inches long (longer the better in my opinion). When harvesting them young you can remove the beans from the pod, cook them and enjoy. However for the larger beans it's worth removing the outer pod/jacket (known as double podding)
The reason I particularly love growing Broad beans is they give a bit of height/verticality to the plot when everything else is quite low growing.
Feel free to leave a comment if there's anything I've missed or if you have any questions

I’ve never heard of broad beans before. I obviously live in a different climate. It was very interesting, however, and I was happy to learn something new! Thank you for sharing.
