  • It's in everything from crisps and toothpaste to chocolate and shampoo, palm oil is a commodity everyone's fighting for - and Papua New Guinea has found itself on the front line. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The country's rainforests - crucial to the battle against harmful carbon emissions - are being razed down at an alarming rate to make way for palm oil plantations.
And now - global brands are being linked to shocking human rights abuses in a two year investigation by Global Witness, which they've shared with this programme.
Undercover recordings reveal palm oil executives apparently admitting to brutal crimes. Our Chief Correspondent Alex Thomson has this exclusive report.

This is disgusting!! These are our so called "prominent" leaders in ENB. This is happening right under our noses and what's worse is our rural people need money for school fees and daily needs and these people are capitalizing on this.

No there are no police brutality. That matter involving Mr Edward Lamur is in connection to some illegal settlers squatting on his land where the matter was reported to Police and they were evicted. It is totally false media publicity portraying a bad image. You should not believe Global Witness or what is said here by Channel 4 news. Don't believe everything you see on the news.

It's time to organise a worldwide boycott of palm oil.

It's tough though, oil palm has a significantly higher yield than any other oil crop. You'd need so much more space to get the same amount of oil from olive, rapeseed or coconut for example. I think supporting organisations like the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil will help to reduce the chance of deforestation and human rights violations but its obviously not perfect.

Absolutely. Meanwhile Brexit supporters, anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers and MAGA Trump voters sit in their armchairs criticizing the mainstream media in their echo chambers. We have never had better access to excellent investigative journalism like this and yet we live increasingly in a post-truth age. We need to actively spread reports like this and push the message that the truth, in the shape of journalism like this, is important.

We have cleared our forests in Europe and America - yet we scream when other people cut there own forests. I have no doubt this is an environmental catastrophe. If we want undeveloped countries to NOT make use of their land and forestry products, we need to pay them not to use these assets.

So horrible. It's hard to stomach how humans can treat each other like this, and worse while destroying PNG's environmental legacy to it's own children. Greed and selfishness....
People like this is why prisons exist.

Just an idea... a public petition to get all these companies to plant trees for years
It won't quite make up for the damage they did behind closed doors... but it's a darn good start.

Currently oil palm is grown on about 7 percent of land devoted to vegetable oil crops, yet palm oil makes up 39 percent of all vegetable oil production. Palm oil requires only 0.26 hectares of land to produce one tonne of oil while soybean, sunflower and rapeseed require 2.22, 2 and 1.52 hectares, respectively, to produce the same.
Let that sink in for a moment. Funny how the palm oil detractors keep shining bad lights on the few bad apples and impose a blanket ban on the commodity, yet ignore the more environmentally devastating effects of alternative oils that are mostly produced in western countries. This is all just a smoke screen for agriculture protectionism, hypocritical attempt at food hegemony.
Global palm oil market size has surpassed USD60 billion in the last couple of years, also surpassing that of soya oil which was USD50 billion in 2020. 44 million acres of land has been planted with palm oil, yielding 72 million tons of oil whereas in the US alone, 77 million acres are soy plantations, yielding only 11.6 million tons of oil. On a global scale, soybeans are planted on 300million acres, yielding a measly 52 million tons of soy oil. What a coincidence palm oil disinformation has in recent years been under attack.

It is sad that Global Witness did a poor investigation. This news is totally inaccurate and misrepresents what is actually happening in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea (PNG). These video footages were selectively taken to broadcast parts that push their (Global Witness) own agendas. In truth, there is no child labour in PNG and there is no mass deforestation here in East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea. In actual fact, adults are employed and kids follow their parents to the farm which is a common practice in PNG custom. It is sad how the media portrays us as being irresponsible and allowing our children to be used as child labour when in fact there aren't any in existence in PNG. This news is misleading and does not represent the truth about the development taking place in East New Britain Province which is one of the agricultural hub of PNG. Very disappointing to see how Western media propaganda tries to destroy the progress of developing countries.
