    People like you make CZcams great - you freely give of your time and experience to teach people you’ve never met. Please know it’s very much appreciated! I really like this video, because it will help me fine tune behavior I’m looking for in my trail horse. Thanks Miss Sam!

    Sam, you have explained it really well. My husband made me a marker, and today will be my first session with my new trekking mare, Cosmic. She is 15 years old, and is a New Zealand Stationbred. Really a looker. She is really pushy on the ground, doesn't give you your own personal bubble, and is very impatient. I have been practicing with her to tie up to the hitching rail with the other horses. We do 1 hour a day. That certainly has helped her. How many hours did it take for your horse, Links, to be able to not want to get off the mark, to crave it? Thank you so much for all your enthusiasm - it is contagious..... I have so much more direction now, after watching your videos. THANK YOU!!!!

Still have alot more to accomplish, but thanks to your videos I am able to do more and more. I also think it is so incredible what you do for the mustang's. You are a God send for them!

    Top video Sam!! You really stand out as a fabulous trainer - I have watched many different people & find you have some extraordinary ability with horses & you're so articulate & able to relate your information so cleanly, & succinctly . And I'm very mindful that your are now 22 or so, & that many of these videos are years old. I think you're going to be one of the great super trainers in your approaching years. I'm a great admirer! Thankyou for sharing so well 🐎🌷🙏

    Am so glad you have videos on starting a horse at liberty. My mare is really enjoying learning these first steps and her confidence has increased by leaps and bounds. She is a very reactive, nervous horse and hates any changes in weather or environment at all, but has learned to watch me just by my trying these steps with her. She will now think instead of just bolting, and waits for her "safe' word which is "YES!". I use this word whenever she gives me a positive reaction to what I am asking. Where I need help though is how to "correct" her when she isn't giving me the reaction I am looking for. For example, when I try the first draw, she wants to touch and check out the whip instead of walking forward. She's pretty comfortable with the whip so I'm not sure why she's doing this. Do I just wait her out, keep going back and asking again to follow me, pull on her lead a little - how do I "fix" this problem? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me!

    I'm really enjoying your videos! One of my horses is a mini yearling that I got a few months ago with the goal of doing therapy visits at hospitals and other care facilities. He does most of the exercises in your basic liberty video well but he is still very fidgety and does not like to stand still. Do you think mark training would help with this? With a horse like this do you need to tire them out more to make the mark appealing? Or is there another exercise that would work better for this problem?Thanks so much! Your work is amazing 🐴😲💗

    Question: is it ok to use the opportunity to groom while on the mark or totally leave them alone while they're resting?

    • @SamVanFleet
      @SamVanFleet  Před 5 lety +1

      Sure! There's no set formula- everything I post has room for improvement or changes that make it more fit to you and your horse. If your horse really enjoys being groomed, then I'd say that would be great!

    Great video! Does the mark absolutely have to be something they can stand on? Or could you use a cone, etc.?

    • @SamVanFleet
      @SamVanFleet  Před 5 lety +2

      Great question! I like starting with a wooden mark like this, but nope! It could be a cone, or anything you want! The process may be a little different though... like a cone for example, I would start with lunging or sending my horse by it and then as soon as the horse touches the cone and stops, I'd let them rest. So then they crave going to the cone/touching the to rest there. It just is easier to start with a wooden mark in my opinion, then transfer to marking other objects.

    Love the videos. Your very talented and patient with your training however on the note of training you would get better results from your movements and the horses movements if you switch to a rope halter instead of a flat halter. :)

    • @SamVanFleet
      @SamVanFleet  Před 5 lety

      Increase their draw and motivation... keep asking her to come while you back up (walk/run backwards) until your happy with the gate she's picked up and then let her rest when she reaches you. I'd have to see your horse in person though, to give better advice.

    • @lauraallen3793
      @lauraallen3793 Před 5 lety

      Try not just using it as pressure, but act relaxed and use it as a tool to pet him with. show him that the whip wont hurt him. Hold it against him if he keeps moving away until he relaxes, then ALWAYS release pressure so he has a minute to think and realize nothing bad happened.
