"Have you ever watched a film, or read a book, where the goodies do really really well to start with, then start losing at the end? I haven't!"
There could be a modern version in Ukraine. Like when western volunteers see their Ukrainian comrades changing and seeing all the Hiedler-, SSS- and Svastika-Tattoos and asking themselves, hey, are we the baddies?
@@matthiasblum6555 Do you think Ukraine are "the baddies" in their ongoing war? Have you actually bought the obviously false russian propaganda that Ukraine is filled with nazis? That is moronic.
The joke should be that the russians are slowly coming to the realisation that THEY are the baddies since they are following the nazi playbook for propaganda and hostile takeover. Funny enough, the russian people actually seem to already be coming to that realisation.
Probably because the winning side are the ones that get to write those films and books. 😉
czcams.com/video/aLJUocaDYw0/video.html You probably mean this. Live show version.
@@AdamMPick They may well also do it in the live show version, but no, I meant the audio version, "That Mitchell and Webb Sound"
You are missing out if you've never seen the series "Blackadder goes forth" with Rowan Atkinson, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Tony Robinson, Tim McInnerny.
The very last scene is one of the best scenes ever.
yes 🙏
One of the greatest comedies of all time.
Humour based in sarcasm isn't easy for everyone to get first time, especially when it's so ironic too
Yanks especially seem to struggle with Sarcasm/Irony.
That’s why I get along so well with British people. They have the same sense of humour and they understand and appreciate sarcasm and irony.
seems like a lack of intelligence if you ask me... sarcasm and dark humor is a trait that has been linked with higher iq, people that get offended or dont get it are usually not the sharpest knife
@@QuotidianStupidity Aha, Explains why when I make a sarcastic comment to yanks online, they usually reply with anger, Like they just never understood and don't understand.
@@steelixian1705 WIth that, tone is harder to convey with text than verbally
David Mitchell is so damn hilarious
Peep Show is great.
The German uniforms were actually designed by Hugo Boss.
He produced, but he didn't design them. From wiki: By the third quarter of 1932, the all-black SS uniform was designed by SS members Karl Diebitsch (artist) and Walter Heck (graphic designer). The Hugo Boss company was one of the companies that produced these black uniforms for the SS. By 1938, the firm was focused on producing Wehrmacht uniforms and later also uniforms for the Waffen-SS.[12]
@@kosefix I think Albert Speer over saw a lot of the design aesthetic for Hitler.

An American chap with an English sense of humour. Splendid!
Theres a Tank regiment in the UK called The Royal Lancers (originally a cavalry regiment) that uses a skull on their cap-badge. Their regiments motto is death or glory
They should change it to "Are we the baddies" lol
From 17/21st lancers.
@@SvenTviking originally from 18th light dragoons regiment
not a tank regiment anymore. armoured cav
Some UK cavalry units were very german in tradition and culture. The skull is an old german hussar insignia. The royal lancers go partly back to the 12th lancers which had the german language Motto "Ich Dien" "I serve"
Some british cavalrists initially didn't join ww1 because of their close ties to german royalty (which made up basically all royal Families of Europe and russia) some units even were under formal command of the german emperor
Glad you have it a second go, this is one of my favourite sketches of Mitchell and Webb.
Also good to hear you rate them as highly as the Two Ronnies. I imagine in 20 years they'll be viewed as classic, timeless British comedy.
Ah yes. One of the best skits ever.
Mitchell & Webb are the best comedy duo.
British self defeating humour based sarcasm is something only the Australians get naturally, you get it now which is great. keep up the videos brother

Not only Australians it's the same in Poland.
That's sounds like something an Australian would say.

@@davesy6969 Yes I am aware of the sketch . The "who is he" was meant to make me sound as clueless as Robert was instead it just sounded like I didn't know what was going on.
Although the SS's use of the skull and crossbones suggests they were the baddies, the emblem and its attending black uniform had a long heritage in German military history that the SS sought to co-opt. The symbol originated in the armies of Frederick the Great and a unit of Hussars, but it gained wider notoriety during the Napoleonic Wars. Napoleon had dissolved the Duchy of Brunswick and absorbed into the Kingdom of Westphalia. The duchy's dispossessed Duke, Friedrich Wilhelm, raised a regiment and offered his service to the opponents of Napoleon. The "Black Brunswickers" had as their uniform colors stark black (some also wore green) and emblazoned their shakos with a white metal Totenkopf.
Explaining jokes to USAers is an entire industry! Enjoyable, if hilarious, work.
also the "panzertruppen" ( armoured/ tank troops) of the wehrmacht had the skull and crossbones as a collar patch, but with a fetching pink border (waffenfarbe) lol
The "Deaths Head" or Totenkopf was a symbol adopted first used by the Prussian Army (Part of pre Germany) in the 1700's. It's adoption into the Reich was undertaken by the first Commander of the Schutzstaffel (SS), "Julius Schrek". That could be the biggest gag of all as "julius" and "schrek" were popular first and second ewish names. Before anyone blows a fuse, Schrek replaced Emil Maurice who was ewish, was Hitlers driver then a body guard in the SS. Made an honorary Arian by Adolf himself. As for Erhard Milch second in Command of the Luftwaffe and Germany's other 15 ewish Generals..... well that's a lot of questions.
The "death head " symbol was on British, German, French, Russian units, usually cavalry unit that thought it was a good idea sword i hand to charge artillery units, latter adopted by air units.
My favourite of their sketches is the Post Apocalypse Survivor Game Show. There is a compilation of them on youtube. They're very dark but very funny sketches

I'm sure many Russians are coming to the same conclusion,
Yes Russia, you are the baddies ☮️
I see you're doing your own version of the Nazi sketch, where you pretend you are clueless to the reality of your country, good one...... Or do you really think your country isn't the rotten apple of the West!?

Don't worry about not remembering it. I can barely recall this morning.
To old-school Germans: The Totenkopf means "Loyalty until - and beyond - death".
Bob monkhouse was a comedy genius
Great reaction. Ty!
It goes far back. Pruessian elite cavalry units wore skull badges on their head gear during napoleonic wars
You should check out Mitchell and Webb's strangely prophetic "The Quiz Broadcast".
The history of the Totenkopf is rather interesting. From a military view it goes waaay back to like before the 7 years war. So like the time of Prussia
And lives on in ukraine,
@@myview5840 Finland still has it
@@American-Orthodox-Christian We do not. They're talking about Totenkopf which is the skull & crossed bones. You're probably referring to the right-facing hook-cross or "sun wheel" (not standing on it's corner), which was widely used by the air force in it's insignia and emblems up until recent years.
Ooops I meant estonia sorry and I know about the sun wheel
Hahaa…there’s nothing like a bit of comedy to make you think 🥴….Thanks for this one 👍✨
Love the "fake" moon landing one too
All those wonderful Hugo Boss suits, with skulls!
Should be a skit in which Hugo Boss and Coco Chanel come to that realization of them being the baddies. A skt produced by Walt Disney, and logistics provided by.... I forgot which still-existing brand of trucks it was, not Ford, but there was a brand that specifically builds and sells trucks, which in the 30's and 40's very eagerly wanted to provide trucks to the German military (I vaguely recall something about them being outbid for it after German officials took one look at their truck offerings and declared them rubbish, or something along those lines).
the cap with the skull was standaard with the officers of the waffen SS.
It was also standard for all tank units, as they were regarded as the successor of the cavalry.

Yeah I think there was a lot of Germans who didn’t agree with hitler and the nazis, they just had to do what they did. I read about one Jewish guy who joined the German army and pretended to not be a Jew. He was discovered 3 times by various different people and all of them helped him cover it up. He got quite high up in the army too. Only to discover what was going on in the death camps where his brothers, dad mum and sister were all killed after the war was over. Wish I could remember his name. Quite an interesting story
If it's the guy I'm thinking of he was front page news, a hero of the invasion of Poland, what a German soldier should aim for. Then they found out he was Jewish. He managed to get his parents out of concentration camp on the back of his celebrity. Unfortunately I've forgotten his name.
There's an old adage that says 'All Nazis were German but not all Germans were Nazis.'
@@B-A-L Yeah, except that the huge pro nazi rallies in the USA in the 30s and even early 40s prove that to be inaccurate.
You're thinking of the 1990 movie Europa Europa. The guy's name was Salomon Perel.
The Black Brunswickers (so called for their uniforms) of the Napoleonic wars had the "totenkopf" symbol on their shakos also.
You really should do the one about Queen Victoria and the linden trees.
As you'd mentioned 'Smith & Jones', I recommend checking out their German Generals sketch.
That sickle joke is so good. The fact refers to the historically accurate Russian scorched earth retreat strategy…. Great stuff.
Low key and laid back, actually lands with a much bigger thud for that.👍 That ole less is more thing I guess.🤔Be well.😉
A group of German officers did try to kill Hitler. Unfortunately they failed. A movie was made about the plot & starred Tom Cruise.
Armstrong & Miller WWII pilot sketches are brilliant
Some of their sketches are just classics
Thank you for revisiting this. Enjoy. One of the best ones I ever heard was from an American, senior officer on a joint exercise in West Germany. 'Man, this is f-cking chaos' It was, we had the wrong freaking maps. 'But hey, war is chaos', Man, this is good training!' Welcome to British humour. Hurrah!
Great video 👍 So happy for you on your journey of comic discovery, the English UK is a "send up" and " ironie" .
Utmost respect to you. I would recommend the alcoholic in the shop sketch and would love to see your reaction to it
Try and find the original radio version (from That Mitchell and Webb Sound). It's got an extra bit about the narrative structure of the war.
Awww man, now I'm wondering is they ever looked at the swastika and thought " yep were not the baddies, it's a symbol of peace"
"American Airplanes do have skulls on them..." Yes. Yes they do......
As an Austrian "Yes, since the irak-war, we think you are the baddies"
It's really interesting that you didn't get it before you completely immersed yourself in British humour. Really goes to show humour is really subjective and maybe influenced by our cultural upbringing and exposure.
I'm curious, is the joke that they really have to complete morons if the skull is what tipped them off?
Of course David Mitchell can make me laugh even when I don't get the joke. 😆
That Mitchell & Webb Look, series 1... genius
You should check out the duo Armstrong & Miller, specifically their British Airmen skits
Worst is that the Swastika was originally an emblem, was a sign of well-being and long life, until it was hijacked :(
I cannot remember the name of the movie, but I think it starred Rutger Hauer, who played a German Police officer who gets documents out of Germany at the end of the war, and finds himself disgusted that he was part of the greater lie.
The Nazi version of the swastika is reversed and on the diagonal instead of square and 'rotating' in the other direction.
It's literally the opposite of the 'sun-wheel' used by many cultures to represent the rebirth of the sun, time, and eternity. Darkness, ending, failure.
I figure that someone trolled the NSDAP early on.
Sort of like a Poe's Law on a conspiracy theorist's site today. ;-)
The Swastika was reversed for the Nazi's, before it was hijacked it was given out at weddings and sort type of thing. If you ever look at a Japanese map they still use the symbol, it's for a Shinto temple/shrine.
I'm not certain if I'm thinking of the right movie as Rutger played German officers a few times, but it might be "Fatherland" (1994), in which a hypothetical/alternative "what if"-type history is presented in which Germany won the war. The movie takes place 20 years after the war, when Germany and the U.S. try to restore diplomatic ties, but there's several politically-tinted murders which SS-detective Xavier March (Rutger Hauer's character) is investigating, while the Gestapo is trying to sweep the whole thing under the rug.
@@EvilFookaire Was so long ago, I'd have to rewatch to be sure ;)
2:00 to 2:05 (ish), correct. There were even those who actively and pointedly qwent against orders, wanting to save lives and/or wanting to be on the right side of their conscience.
This was not without risk.
an example about my grandmother:
When Germany invaded us, my grandfather was a high-ranking military officer who was officially declared dead so he could take part in organizing a resistance. My grandmother not only knew of this, but helped with it.
Part of her involvement meant that she had a big old radio (the communications type, not the listen-to-happy-music type) in her house.
One day there was a razzia (German troops basically going house-to-house turning shit upside down to search for something/anything) but the german officer in charge of the area she lived in chose to come to her home before tthe rest of his troops, he let her know that he4 kew she had a radio, what the consequences would be if his troops found it - at that point in time, she'd be marched into the woods and shot - and that she had five minutes to find a better hiding place for that radio.
After the war, my family wanted to thank that officer... only to find that days be3fore the liberation this officer himself had been marched into the woods less thaqn two kilometers from my grandmother's old home and executed, because one of his more hard-line nazi subordinates ratted him out for rescueing people. They found out because they only found the officer's son, who had old letters from his father to his mother, one of which mentioned how this officer imagined the shoe being on the other foot and how he couldn't let a poor widow get executed by what would have been his men, his authority and his orders.
I don't recall if he was SS or Wehrmacht, both were present at that time and their activities overlapped/intertwined, but regardless, that officer (and some of the men serving directly under him) made the choice of going against their orders in order to save people, knowing that it could result in themselves getting a shallow, unmarked grave in a country not their own.
Sir Digby Chicken Caesar is EPIC
To be honest, the skulls on the caps are coming from the Hussars. Especially the Pussian Death's head hussars based out of Königsberg/Kaliningrad. The insignias pre-date the first World War by a lot, so not really a sign of a baddie, but part of the militaristic traditions of Prussia
You should Check out "A bit of Fry and Laurie" with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. Similar but pre "That Michell and Webb Look". Great vid, thanks!

M&W linden trees
Clever stuff.
The Death's Head emblem dates back to German (kingdom of Prussia at the time) heavy cavalry units under Frederick the Great. The Naz1s just stole it.
Yeah a British tank Regiment has a skull as it's cap badge. They were originally a cavalry regiment. 17/21 Lancers, now called The Queens Royal Lancers, their motto is "Death Or Glory" (badge has the skull and underneath "Or Glory"). A lot of old cavalry units used the deaths head as it's emblem, popular in Prussia, it was common in Hungary too.
I would love to see you watch the BMX bandit sketch from the same episode
Thanks
Thank you so much for that.
Someone must have said, we are going to be the most evil bastards who ever walked the face of this earth, so I think we will need a real scary evil uniform
This is brilliant! You should check more from David Mitchell, especially his rants. Regarding your remark at 02:08, the SS were not just some officers in the army. They were some of the most ruthless nazis and an elite force within the nazi party. They were all volunteers until they allowed normal soldiers about halfway through the war.
Oh I know. Many of the SS were part of Hitlers Brown Shirts before his election.

@@TheEclecticBeard there,a a lot of it about...
Keep well, Lee....
The Totenkopf was one of the few symbols the Nazi's didn't take from elsewhere. The swastika is from the Hindu religion, they used runes a lot, or based on it like the SS symbol. It goes back way before WW2, like the eagle, which has been a Germanic symbol for centuries.
Well August von Mackensen was a germen field marshal during the first world war, and he had a big skull on his hat. He was suspected to be disloyal to the Third Reich during the second world war but noting was proven.
Fry and Laurie are also a great duo
Armstrong and Miller are just as great.
i remember as a kid the first time i saw in some book on nazi uniforms that they had actual skulls, i couldnt believe it, as though they knew they were the villains.... but yes later i learned the totenkopf existed well before hitler - it was a symbol that the black hussars had also back in the time of Frederick the Great and if you know anything about hussars, it was all about panache and having a reputation , not so much about being evil and all that. Though of course there is no question of the evil and villainy when it came to the SS

In my daily life I see a lot more tattoos on people these days than I used to, and whenever I see skull motifs on people's body art I always think of this sketch and wonder.... ;-)
That's high praise,

I love the point when the presenter says "American planes have skulls on them". Just think about all the bombs dropped on Vietnam and Iraq etc, etc. When do you think the penny will drop on the realisation that maybe the Americans are not the good guys? 😅
Most Western powers TBF; but the difference is how the nation processes their missdeeds afterwards; Germanic self-reflection, or the denialism more common in the UK/US. It's troubling times; the rise of nationalism; rejection of plain facts of history, egged on by a culture war. It's hard to say if people will have their "are we the baddies moment" given how hard some of them are proudly leaning into being called"dispicable".
Try Armstrong and Miller. Fabulous! 🇬🇧
I believe the actual reason for why Skulls is that it was appropriated from the earlier Prussian Army who wore the totenkopf as part of their uniform in the Waterloo campaign under Blucher.
What’s to “get”?
"Are we the baddies" - Honestly that is something anyone fighting for any country, should ask themselves. We all need to reflect on the things we do - especially when the stakes are high.
"Yes, we are" probably answered the early submariners who used skulls on their insignia precisely because they considered covert warfare "ungentlemanly"
@@Turalcar The skull and crossbones for a sailor / pirate / submariner means 'no quarter' or 'no surrender accepted'.
It also signifies a ship being sunk under certain rules of engagement, imposed by their political masters.
Many examples can be found in pictures of submarines and other ships returning to port after a war patrol.
Other symbols exist, such as a whip or a broom at the mast-head.
Check Smack the Pony, it is comedy scetch series made by like 3-4 female performers.from 1999-2003. It is hilarious!
There would have been a lot of doubt in the regular German army, but the SS were fully committed to their cause
