Always slightly disappointed that this clip is never proceeded by the relating "behind the scenes" sketch in which they discuss whether to do accents or not, because the final line here is the punchline to that skit.

When I was a kid, their name made no sense to me. I'd heard about these strange Americans on the TV news in the sixties. Trying to make sense of what I'd heard as a kid, I assumed that these people were called the Jukebox Plan....Rolling Stones?

As it was explained to me, the hoods are worn to prevent people being able to take pride in being part of a penitential procession. The KKK liked the idea of having anonymity when they wanted it and of associating themselves with an expression of religious purity. Sadly, it's the KKK that the costumes are now most closely associated with.
Seems to be a common theme of Racists and bigots co opting symbols. Often, though not always, from the very groups they hated. You'd think given their predilection to mass psychosis and delusion, they'd be a more creative bunch. The KKK seem to have missed the irony in taking a symbol from the Catholics, which - for reasons I have never been able to determine to my satisfaction - is for many sects of the KKK their *second* most hated group - after black people, obviously.
Actually Ben I think it was Jews that they hated the most after black people and the Catholics only came in third.

How funny
Other than SNL in the US. What other US sketch shows exist now? From my own research not much at all these days. Mainly US comedy is sitcom's or stand up.
Really the only one I know of it's dropped way off in the last 10 or so years.
There are not many sketch shows in the UK either, if any, they are generally way more expensive and time consuming to produce than panel shows or sitcoms. With so many channels and streaming services competing for advertising revenue, the budgets for most shows is severely reduced.

I never understood how anyone could take these people seriously when they dress like that and have titles like "The Grand Dragon". It sounds like a Dungeons and Dragons group.

Well I think it's important to differentiate between racist scum like the KKK and other groups which are really just private members clubs with silly rituals bourn out of simply existing for a long time.

I didn't mean to suggest you were, my apologies if I sounded aggressive.
I am not sure these people feel a need for bizarre rituals, I think most of them simply tolerate the rituals in order to gain access to the clubs and the benefits one expects to receive upon joining; the Masons are a perfect example of that. Of course some take those rituals more seriously than others and I would argue that it can take on a cult like mentality given the right set of circumstances.
The KKK are different as their members join because they have a clear ideology and all the rituals simply reinforce their hateful beliefs.
