I don't even live in the UK, but I really enjoy these pubcasts. I wish every country had something similar : young, informed people able to comment on current events, and critique, draw conclusions and give underlying reasons for bad behaviour on the part of their representatives. And it's so engaging. Well done team !
Why doesn't someone use their parliamentary privilege to read out the names of all the elected MP's and party employees who have been accused to bullying and sexual harassment (just to name two) while working there ?
I think it would take too long.
Bringing Parliamentary privilege into disrepute (since no conviction has taken place) since details will come out if guilt is established. Parliament is poisonous enough without a gaggle of folk sharpening extra knives because they were 'outed'.

A lot of people are thinking this. "I make buses" springs to mind (when this interview, by someone subsequently given a peerage, stole all search results for "Boris bus". I imagine this steals all search traffic for "George Osborne wedding".
Brilliant show with all the discrepancies. Ava has a twinkle in her eye before dropping the boys into hot water.
What parent faced with an abuse of a child, reports it to the BBC and Sun but not the police? The "victim" has said the parent is not telling the truth! Why in the opening did the presenters think this a funny topic?
The Step-Dad reported it to the Police first, and was told no crime had been committed.

@@sandham He has varied his claim a number of times eg that nobody at the BBC would talk to him; that he had a 30minute discussion with someone at the BBC; and that the discussion lasted an hour. Just don't know what has been made up by the papers or how much his tongue runs away with him. If the police told him there wasn't a problem, why did he go to the BBC? Their hands would be largely tied in the absence of proof particularly given the reaction of the purported victim . Sad all round.
Had this on with youtube's captions and the line "So Matt Smith is dating an animal?" was an unexpected miscaption...

Absolutely agree with Eva, I am 40 and being single I obviously can't find a connection with someone around my age who has the same level of life experience so for me to date someone at 20 would be me lowering my expectation of a relation and also to a degree taking advantage of the younger woman's lack of life experience. I would also say it is a two way street and there are a section of women in their 20's (and probably men) who seek out more financially stable, older partners to fulfil their economic desires rather than anything else.
At 38 I started dating a 21 year old woman. The relationship lasted 4 years but by the end it was so clear to me that she was too young for me. It was a mistake in all honesty, but I don't regret it.
Out of interest, how did your perspective change between the start and end of the relationship?
@@LylaMoshi The things we had in common faded. I was a young 38, but when I lost my dad I think I changed. Other things became more important to me.
I started acting more my age and she of course stayed a 20 something. The differences in our outlooks and perspective which had always been there to a degree because of the age gap, at that point became more apparent to me. We grew apart.
Insane to hear the guy from the LBC clip using the "gateway drug" argument about weed. So crazy to hear people still bring that up in 2023, it was debunked like 20 years ago.

I wouldn't have this podcast any other way than as a "hot mess", Oli. Also, it's not a pubcast if you're all drinking water.
The law didn't change in relation to Cliff Richard, he won at court under existing law, but that set a precedent that affected future behaviour by papers and broadcasters.
Not only that, Nicky Campbell, (after Wheel of Fortune), made a good career for himself on good honest respectable journalism.
I understood the standard ‘age weirdness’ formula was it’s weird to date under (age/2)+7.
It captures that intuitive point that wider age gaps are ok between older adults - so for a 50 year old that comes out at 32 (an age gap of 18 years) but for a 25 year old it comes out at 20 (only a 5 year age gap).

The big issue is that people decide an allegation is true even after said allegation is "proven" untrue.

True. The supposed victim has said vehemently that it is untrue. In any normal scenario that would be the end of it. It wasn't, and mysterious new "victims" have been found. How deep into the petty cash did the Sun have to dig?
Can you imagine the police continuing an investigation into a theft if the complainant said 'actually I've just found the wallet down the back of my sofa"?

there's no discrepancy - a child of 16 can consent to sex but remains protected from humiliating sexual exploitation until they reach adulthood at 18 - good , decent law

That's interesting. Maybe the legal logic is that the media from sex is potentially more dangerous, or more likely to lead to exploitation than the carnal act itself. Even if the laws were created pre-internet, it kinda acknowledges how any media becomes forever permanent when uploaded to the internet
Oil got a great voice for radio talk show and I hope he continues and gets the confidence he needs to control the calls better because that guy was talking some nonesense about gateway drug which oil should have challenged. But it's obvious he's first ever time doing it and it's 4am the fact he can speak is impressive with cocaine :D

I lived in UK for a while, and still keep an interest in your politics but I always forget about how crazy your media landscape is.
One of the questions is why it its taken the BBC so long to carry out any investigation internally or suspending the presenter until they know whether there are legal implications or not and laws were broken.
Because the BBC get literally hundreds of complaints against their on screen employees every week.

When I was growing up (back in Europe), and I was 14-15, pretty much 75% of girls at school were dating older guys, and the usual age of them was 19-23. Thinking back it is horrifying, but it was so common it didn't even shock me. And those weren't "romantic, innocent courtship", I have literally heard them discussing, in no uncertain means, what kind of sex they prefer.
And even aside the obvious (I hope) problem here there was also the effect of that on the boys - you could forget of having a gf if you weren't 18+, with a license and a car. (Or at least such was the prevailing sentiment)
I think olli is a low-key genius. There’s just something about his eyes that screams I’ve got a bigger plan here!

The guy who said that weed is a gateway isnt completely wrong but not all weed users want to chase the high and use it to calm them down, pain relief stress relief which is what i used it for, my adhd and anxiety is often interfering with my life, and contributes to my insomnia. Yes some go on to others but making legal or illegal wont stop people it means if someone od or is a adict they wont be affraid to get help. We need to look at holland. We need to solve the causes of addiction and destigmatise addiction rather than blame be sympathetic. Im certain more have died due to alcohol ie liver failure, drunk driving killing others and themselves, damage to property. Same with tabcco smoking.
The part about why people do or dont get addicted is a combo of social factors (ie class) but there is a genetic element. The war on drugs targets the poor, same with crime, white collar crime is ignored and arguably hurts more. The same can be said for white collar drug uses why should hedge funder doing white lines not be shamed the same way a crack head on the street is?

Oli is therefore broadcasting in a radio studio when on LBC so that is the big difference and therefore the LBC microphone has a different setting to that in the PoliticsJOE studio. By the way, Oli was on this morning between 4.00am and 7.00am (5th August 2023) and on again tomorrow morning (6th August 2023) between 4.00am and 7.00am. Another is that he talks away from the microphone in the video but closer when on LBC like the other presenters do.

Drugs are already legal anyway as it's always been out there so why not allow them to be sold in a better manner so people can get it from a clean source than random people selling it. Also, I don't really think that allowing cannabis will make people want other drugs just the same as people who drink beer or wine don't just start wanting higher abv alcoholic drinks, do they. Not to forget cannabis is already legal for medical use when getting it private for certain reasons since 2018
Also, yeah I am with you on that too. No person who is an alcoholic or drug addict is wanting to do it for the sake of it. If people knew about addiction more then they'd not see it like that not to forget that some people have DNA that makes them already more likely to be addicted to drugs or alcohol. I do wish people could see addictions even smoking a caring and respectful view.

I don't think Matt Smith's current girlfriend is 24. I believe she's in her early 30's.
I would argue that people under 18 shouldnt go out with people above 18, people 18-15 shouldnt date above 25, 25+ free game but it is about power and influence not age. I say this as yes people do develop mentally and physically at different rates however given we know the brain doesnt fully develop until 25 and those younger than that make decions ruled by the area which commands emotion not the area which rules reason. Also as a 22 year old i still feel very young despite going to uni etc but feel old enough to know to not date an 18 year old. I have now business dating a teen, likewise i do not have anything in common with 40 year olds. Its weird to me, and the argument of 'preference' or 'type' doesn't fly. Look at leonardo dicaprio, he is pushing 50 and could likely pull any woman he wanted older or younger but chooses to date under 25 which to me reads no one his age wants him and that he wants women too young who have still developing brains and he can have power over them.
