  • Hey everyone Wolf Lord Rho here! Today we're discussing Chaos Space Marines and the success of the Red Corsairs! Why in truth it's all thanks to their leader, Huron Blackheart...
    Spoiler Warning to begin as the events we're discussing today are from the Warhammer 40,000 novel "Huron Blackheart, Master of the Malestrom" by author Mike Brooks. As always I really recommend you read the stories for yourself first, as that's the best way to enjoy the lore for yourself. Without spoilers!

    I feel like hes the closest example to a Chaos Guilliman we will ever get and the example Huron sets for using that logical yet caring nature in the most insidious way is kind of terrifying in its own right. If Huron is this persuasive, then Guilliman, his genefather, would be like this but even more so.

  • @TeutonicKnight92
    @TeutonicKnight92 Před rokem +19

    One of the scenes I really like with Huron contrast him with Abaddon. In the Night Lords series the main character is meeting with Abaddon and makes a pithy remark to him that pisses off the warmaster.
    Talos notes that a great leader would have laughed off the remark of his junior and humor him in an attempt to win him to his side. Abaddon instead shoots him.
    In the next book the character is negotiating with Huron and is trading barbs and when Huron makes a jab about the Night Lords failures Talos notes that it must be hard for Huron to get accurate information so far from the front lines and the real war.
    Everyone in the Throne room falls silent and one of Talos’s companions remarks that he just killed them all. Huron by contrast to Abaddon laughs off Talos’s remarks and states he would have liked to seen Nostromo for it bred interesting sons and then hires them.

    Huron is vastly superior to Abaddon from a character standpoint. Abaddon is often this almost one dimensional, moustache twirling supervillain who cackles, has childish fits of anger, all whilst wearing ten foot thick plot armour to achieve his goals. In contrast, Blackheart IS evil, but he's this nuanced, intelligent, almost reasonable but certainly reasoned arch villain who you can't help but appreciate, because it's that dark intellect that makes him genuinely scary as a villain. At this point, Abaddon is a tool used by GW to advance the plot, often in a very contrived way. Huron on the other hand is a massive threat simply on his own merit, and should, in my opinion, end up usurping the title of warmaster and killing Abaddon.

    • @Quintus_Fontane
      @Quintus_Fontane Před rokem +4

      Yeah fair, I suppose killing him off would be unkind to his (Honestly impressively loyal and resilient) fans in the community. Maybe Huron could usurp the title of Warmaster, and Abaddon could escape or be exiled with a bunch of the Black Legion, and start building his power again from the ground up. That could be an interesting story in itself, and give newer writers at BL chance to redeem the Despoiler as a character after years of... well, let's call it hit and miss writing.

    And now I really hope for a coversation between Guilliman and Huron at some point! Although G-man would likely be his superior in most things, I can kind of see how Huron could exploit Guilliman's displeasure with the current state of the Imperium, and how their logical approach to things could mae them somewhat kindred though enemies. Think that could be a much more interesting rivalry than Guilliman vs most other big bads of the 40k-verse. Expect maybe Zarek or perphaps Lorgar.

    that's a great material indeed. in the lore there are a few characters drawn by their respective authors outside the templates offered by Games Workshop. Characters that may follow the general faction (chaos, imperium etc) although they're doing it by usin their own reasoning instead of following their respective faction tradition (genetic conditioning). One of these characters is Huron, other coming to mind right now may be Honsou (on the chaos side) and Lukas (on the imperial side). Feels good to find such characters cutting their own path, they give the lore an extra layer of complexity, making it less stereotype.

    I see Huron turning to chaos as a worst example of Imperium's self-destructive ignorance. A brilliant Astartes commander, administrator and manager, capable of securing the Maelstrom zone first against all odds for the Imperium and then against all adds against the same Imperium. Huron let's Vengar grow in strength and then gets rid of him and it doesn't look like its his fault. Other Lords would kill any threats with no second though which leads to infighting. He reminds me of a certain Persian empire founder. Even when taking over a nation he left the leaders in place and allowed whatever religion was in place to remainas long as they paid taxes and were loyal. Most people of treated with dignity and respect don’t mind who is in charge. He’s dangerous because he doesn’t require chaos to change people just better options than they have. Why kill a valuable defeated foe when you can use their talent for yourself and improve your side especially if they aren’t zealots.
