I volunteer at a no kill shelter and it breaks my heart to think of how many people are buying dogs instead of adopting. I ended up adopting one of them from the place I volunteer 😂 and this past week, all but 6 dogs got adopted, which makes me happy

Erin what's wrong with a person that loves a purebred dog and willing to pay 2k for it? You sound envious, spiteful and jealous. Some people do that because they know what they're getting as far as genetics, personality & temperament unlike shelter dogs that have issues sometimes & you never know how they'll react once they get home like the one I had. He was extremely sweet and friendly in his kennel at the humane society but he did a 180 once he got home. Chasing kids down trying to attack, trying to attack me at random moments while walking him and he tried to attack my brother in law as well. Immediately brought him back to the shelter. My $1200 was well spent on a purebred Australian shepherd puppy. One of the best dogs I've ever had. Very loyal and smart. You get what you pay for

Critical Thinker S What makes you think that all breeders are puppy mills? If you never seen or MET a ACTUAL responsible breeder and seen their dogs, their pedigrees, their health testing and their titles, then don’t say anything. There are amazing breeders out there who actually care about the breed and the dogs have solid genetics, good temperament and health. Those people who breed their dogs with sibling are puppy mills and backyard breeders, NOT responsible breeders. Dogs from responsible breeders don’t step foot in the shelter since they sign a contract stating if they can’t take care of the dog anymore, they return it to the breeder and they will find it a home. Literally all dogs from shelters are from back yard breeders and puppy mills.
People would rather spend 2k on a dog since they know it’s genes, temperament/drive and health then getting a shelter dog with unknown problems. Many people get dogs from breeders to do sports with them or they want specific temperament and breed. Australia shepherds are not “designer dog”, they are herding/working dogs bred for a purpose. Designer dogs are those miniature or dwarf American bully’s which I do not know why people breed them.
I do not support “adopt don’t shop” but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t adopt a dog, go ahead, if you want to then please do. But it annoying how so many people bash out on ACTUAL good breeders thinking they are puppy mills. I wish more people knew the differences from a good breeder and backyard breeder.
      Glad to educate:)

Angelina I understand what you are saying BUT I feel like you should always adopt because you are saving a life, when you buy from big chain companies you are just feeding into them. And yes, a few puppies are bred responsibly by certified breeders but a lot of them are bred in mills (which have terrible living conditions for the animals). I'm not sure if you realized but so so many dogs are in shelters from chain companies and all that. Even though you don't know exactly what you are getting yourself into with shelter dogs, you never know, there is a big chance that your new shelter animal will be the sweetest, most grateful and loyal pet you will ever have. I am fostering 2 pit bull puppies that were rescued from a kill shelter and they are both so amazing. Yeah puppies that are from stores might be cuter at first sight than shelter dogs but they are bred to be like that from selective breeding and many diseases can be passed down through that. I hope you can understand what I am saying

However vet school is really expensive and all vet students have so much student debt so weigh your options hahahaha. What’s a $50,000-$60,000 salary if you’re putting a large chunk of that towards paying off loans (I graduate undergrad next year and then hoping to go on to vet school, debt and all!)

YES ADOPT DONT SHOP! Ugh it’s so aggravating that people spend so much money on “purebreds” or even specific mutts when there’s perfectly healthy, beautiful dogs waiting to be saved and given a lovely home in shelters :(

    • @luciusmaximus1169
      @luciusmaximus1169 Pƙed 6 lety +11

Did you know some people buy "purebreds" for a purpose? There's nothing wrong with buying a puppy, even if you disagree I dont see why "purebreds" pose a problem? Some people just prefer to get the right dog, and not have to go through sending a dog back to the rescue because the dog is too aggressive or shy or excitable - yes this can happen with "Purebreds" but it can also happen with "rescues". Border collies are bred for a purpose of herding sheep - if there were no "purebred" collies no one would be able to use sheep for herding - yes some rescues could do it, but it'd be a lot of trial and error if the dog they rescue couldnt do it and a lot of vet bills if the "rescue" bit the sheep and injured it.

Don't demonize buying from breeders. Yes adopting is a great option and does save lives and yes there are very bad and irresponsible breeders. But if your buying from a reputable responsible breeder it's good and okay. Some people need a young healthy dog bred from working lines and very well bred because some people actually use dogs for working. Also, dogs in a shelter may have been abused or may be old and unhealthy and need more time which some people simply don't have time for.

We adopted a sweet little rescue dog in October and this would be really cool to do for her. We think she’s mostly corgi but her coloration is not consistent with the breed. She has spotting like an Australian Cattle Dog, but she’s so low riding and has a distinctly corgi body shape. The shelter thought she was pet terrier though. No matter what she breeds she may be, she’s adorable and perfect and I’m so happy we were able to give her a better life!

I love these sort of things, it's such a cool thing to find out. My dog is a rescue, we're pretty sure he's at least 80% Rottweiler and Doberman. But with rescue mutts there's always a chance of more than what's obvious in their blood. He was in the shelter because he went after a porcupine and due to money and weird family situations the previous owners chose to give him up. I'm lucky cuz he's my amazing dorky baby Timber.

Buying dogs from a responsible breeder is not a bad thing. Dog breeds were made for a purpose and some people actually need those dogs for specific purposes. For example, my dog is a purebred standard poodle. Why? Because I need a service dog and poodles are one of the top 3 breeds used as service dogs. Could I have adopted? Yes, but the service dog washout rate is around 80% with rescue dogs. No need to hate on people for wanting to know their dogs history and health and temperament before investing in them.

I'm so glad you rescue. When my mother-in-law was looking into getting another dog after the one she had had to be put to sleep (major hip problems), I lovingly urged her into looking at adopting a rescue. And at the very least, if she was dead-set on buying a pure bred, to make sure she bought it from reputable breeders, and not a pet store or some backyard breeder. She ended up adopting and he's the best. We live in Australia where betting on greyhounds is huge, and there are so many agencies specifically for retired greyhounds that have been given up by their previous owners because they don't bring in anymore money. So next up, when my Husband and I are finally in a place where we can give a dog an adequate home with a backyard and space, we want to adopt a couple of greyhounds from rescue agencies. It just makes you feel so much better about yourself; that you're giving a dog an actual loving home, instead of them being stuck in a kennel waiting for a family or to be euthanized.

I LOVE this video! I have a 2yo Siberian husky and a 4yo pit terrier. We rescued my pit baby last year and dealt with a lot of issues initially from his past- he was abused, abandoned, and returned to the shelters 3 times before we found him. Both my doggos have anxiety problems too. They're the weirdest best friends though and it just melts my heart! When my pit is cold, my husky will snuggle up next to him or lay on him.

I agree, adopt not shop. My Gigi was a rescue as well. Gigi is a Jackabee half terrier and half beagle. Both of my cats were rescues off the street. My kitten Frostbite found my sweetie while he was putting up Christmas lights and Frostbite just adopted us. My other kitty Boo approached my sweetie while he was grilling. So yeah, the kitties found us! So glad you did do this video. I hope you are feeling better.

You're looking really good today lovely! We have an 11 pound Yorkie called The Gizlet, he's a 100% pure breed surprisingly. He's small, mad and daft, likes to shout a lot and hates anyone leaving the house. He's a duvet dog, he hates going out for walks, even as far as the bottom of the garden if he doesn't have to. He's so small he really needs to wear a jumper and a coat in this cold weather (it's below freezing here in Scotland) but he'll rip it off if anyone puts them on him. He was diagnosed with Epilepsy when he was 3, he has to take Phenobarbital every day but it works really well for him.

For Persephone the Corgi is from the Herding group, the Golden Retriever is from I assume the companion group and the Cocker Spaniel is from the sporting group and it has the largest percentage so you aren't that far off with the predictions :)

my dog was written as a "german shepherd mix" at our shelter, but looking at him, he doesn't really look like a german shepherd. We think he might be lab, and border collie. But all we know is that he is a big black dog that is happy and likes to know where everyone is.
He turned seven this year and he still acts like a puppy.
I think it'd be interesting to do one of these tests just to know

Aw Zoe reminds me of my dog Molly. She’s a 13 year old 90 lb black dog. I had her dna tested and she’s 25% golden retriever 12.5% Alaskan malamute 12.5% Australian Shepherd and 50% “mixed breed”. Really kinda disappointed such a large percentage was mixed breed. And I never would have guessed any of those breeds. I always thought she was a border collie German Shepherd mix

Appa? Oppa? Your second dog almost made me cry he's the most adorable little thing and has the same face as my late dog who was honestly the best dog in the world! He was a rescue and didn't like men, wouldn't play with toys, very territorial around his food and was on the euthanize list when we took him home. We got him home and he was the friendliest dog ever and thought he was a little dog and would sit on my lap lol
