  • Salmon Fishing in Chile. Where to go and what to do? It's a great question. We went down to Chile to fish with our friends from "A La Pesca" a locally produced fishing show.
    We were joined by Rob Alcock of Gibbs Fishing and decided to give our hosts an in depth course in downriver fishing, a style of fishing virtually unused in Chile. In part one of our amazing trip we stayed a small seaside town and got an authentic Chilean experience while fishing hard from sunrise to sunset targeting King (or chinook) salmon on down riggers.
    Let us know what you think of the episode! Part Two coming VERY soon.

    Lucky you, I've been following what's happened in Chile for several years. It took less than 50 years for 20,000 Cowlitz River hatchery smolts to colonize an entire continent's worth of watersheds. I'd love to go there but I'm just a poor slob on disability.

    • @ReelWestCoast
      @ReelWestCoast  Před 2 měsíci

      It's very impressive how the salmon have survived and thrived there.

      @@ReelWestCoast I read a 40-page study published in the late 1990's on how this all came about. They did DNA analysis on a wide range of Chilean watersheds. They all had the Cowlitz code sourced from one abandoned salmon ranching experiment. There are some lessons to be learned on a wide spectrum related to our own salmon enhancement and conservation. Too bad the Canucks went down in game seven. :)

      It seemed very similar to BC for sure and at times it would almost feel like we were in Clayoquot sound. But then a penguin would jump out of the water and remind us where we were! Thanks for watching.

    Just curious if they said they did extra well with you guys running your gear, or if they usually do well on their own?

    • @ReelWestCoast
      @ReelWestCoast  Před 2 měsíci

      The boys from "A La Pesca" are very passionate anglers and helped set this whole thing by reaching out to Gibbs Fishing years ago and starting to run their gear. They have been finding great success with it compared to the methods they were using before. We definitely helped them get more dialed in and shared some best practices. Also, it was their first time using teaser heads and bait which was very cool for them.

    This is so sick b-mo. I saw some local Chileans river fishing catching monsters about a year ago. No idea they had them. I thought they were up here lol it was a 50 pounder. I asked the CZcamsr where he was and yup chile 🇨🇱. This is a wicked video! Also do you guys have an online store or anything like that?

    Not a fan of the holier than thou attitude against the catch and keep Chilean fishermen. The pacific salmon foundation released a study in 2021 which revealed that catch and release chinook suffer a 30% mortality rate. When you guys do your videos where you catch and release 30 chinook to keep fishing instead of taking the first one or two per the BC regs, all the stress on the released fish result in the death of about 9 of them and have a much greater impact on populations than the catch and and go home guys.

    • @ReelWestCoast
      @ReelWestCoast  Před 2 měsíci +6

      Really not sure where the "holier than thou" part came. Maybe something was lost in the presentation. It was just a simple conversation regarding their philosophy and way of life. We also wanted to express to viewers why there were no releases.
      Also, this summer will be our 4th year participating in the study that you referenced and there are multiple videos on our channel showing us going out with the researchers in the study and testing different angling methods to figure out their relation to incidental mortality. We have a few episodes on this issue on our CZcams and it's very informative and interesting, definitely check them out. Thanks for watching!

      There's plenty of other studies saying that catch and release has very minimal effect on fish.
      I can make up a study right now and post it online saying whatever I want, it's pretty easy to turn into some sort of university or college real quick.
