My grandfather was a state level hockey player for Pakistan. He used to tell how dominant India and Pakistan were in 60s,70s and 80s.Nobody could stand a chance with this two teams.
Pakistan really dominated world cups along with Netherlands ..blaming astro turf for downfall of hockey is just a lame excuse ....real culprit was power politics for indian hockey

Remember 2007 cricket world cup, India kicked out of stage tournament after got defeated from Bangladesh. We got angry, we started asking similar kind of questions, like why we should support, why we should watch them. But later T20 happened and we forgot everything. So it's absolutely okay to be disappointed but don't lose the hope.
The only thing I'm not able to understand is we're giving so much love to football even though our football team is no where in top 100. From where this unconditional love is coming?

@@detectivesroy win loss is part of every game. But our team can beat newzealand anyday. It was just a bad day. Indian Hockey team is currently very good. It just lacks psychologcal fitness needed to execute final moments properly, particularly the forward line. But over they have also improved the deficienct psychological aspect significantly in recent times. If it just improves by 50%, team india will bring golden days back. After the introduction of astroturf too Pakistan has performed quite well at world stage till 7-8 years ago. Astroturf was hardly a problem of team india, it was and is just simple lack of enough practice on these turfs. I think government of Odisha should open commercial wing of this sport to increase revenue and make this board powerful like BCCI. For this they should first think it to popularise it at national level, like Pro Kabaddi league has succeeded to some extent.

To make hockey popular in India, we need a good domestic league like IPL or EPL.
There should be around 16 teams from all regions of India representing the states. Divison leagues i.e its juniors should also be made like Ranji Trophy . This will develop professional hockey.

This hockey world cup was really important. It could actually revive hockey in india if we had won it. Unfortunately we lost.
Yes we lost, but I found a lot of people talking about what went wrong, how confidence is the key, and the strategies and how one mid fielder's absence could crumble the entire structure of the team's defense. These discussions were never before heard in online platforms, surely the interest has risen up, and there are hockey behemoth nations like AUS and NZ who have dedicated players and coaches for the last 50 years, so India is well behind in training, strategies, and infrastructure. It would be such a thrill ride to witness such a nation win, and if they dominate, it would be mind blowing. Now we need to support our players, but consecutive losses will dampen this rise in interest, so winning is a must for Indian Hockey Team for them to get more sponsors. The India vs NZ match was interesting none the less.

Very informative videos. I remember watching IHL matches in Bangalore during late 2000s. I still feel as a fan the darkest day of Indian hockey was when India finished 12th(last) in 1984 Olympics in US.

Indian Hockey needs a face, build a brand so that more influential people followed by others try to associate themselves with the game. This might upset some, but nostalgia of the past alone can't revive the popularity of the game. Also you can't force people to like a sport they don't enjoy. IPL and T20 made Cricket a truly global sport in terms of business, without which Cricket would have suffered too.

I think there is need of more training and good couching and more expenditure should be made in training and test matches which is unfortunately not happening.....
There is talent in the country but the thing is in ground level there is no awareness......like see we talk about hockey when the time is high....but on normal life we dont except cricket.
The way children play cricket in Galli mohalla....if in same way hockey or any other game is played ....than there will be more awareness.
But all that could be achieved by marketing different games and showing examples that how different sports are also necessary.
