The strong weather system triggered high tides and giant waves along the coast of Santa Cruz County early Thursday, January 5. The storm surges destroying sections of the pier in the seaside town of Capitola and another in Seacliff.
Video footage showed the Capitola Wharf split in half from a section of the wharf collapsing into the sea. Water from the ocean and Soquel Creek surged back and forth carrying massive tree trunks.
In addition, torrents of water surging into seaside homes and businesses that had been boarded up in advance of the storm. The damage was just the latest after a series of storms hit California. The Santa Cruz Wharf was evacuated as waves reaching up to 20 feet pummeled the structure and officials warned spectators to seek shelter.
Multiple road closures also went into effect throughout Santa Cruz County due to flooding. The county urged residents of beachfront homes to avoid ocean-facing windows amid the tidal surge. Many residents came back to rescue what they could from their flooded homes, even though the risk was still there.

I wonder if they're going to get earthquakes now mother nature is not happy with what they're doing
Do not rely on your knowledge always put your trust in Lord your God he is our Anchor anything we encounter in life 🙏 in that incident we learned something don't built your house near or above water anything that belongs to water will claim soon like that always built your house on solid ground like Your faith. I consider Santa Cruz a community of people that actually care about the Earth. To me it is Sad that the damage happened there
What about minorities,do they help them
San Andreas falut is shifting😮
I miss Santa Cruz so much and i hope all of my friends in the county are safe. I still wish i was there. ❤
Thanks for the clips. However, the footage does not match the description... The damaged piers involved piers in Seacliff/Aptos and Capitola Village, which are both separate towns from Santa Cruz. And Soquel is pronounced "soh-KEL".
Though the effort to post videos is appreciated, too many people on CZcams put little to no effort researching for the sake of accuracy. Accuracy matters.
Screw facts. It's all about who can put it out there first.
@@bitcoindca8070 So what.
@Bitcoin DCA Just because no one has ever heard of fremont, has absolutely no relevance to distinguishing between Capitola and Santa Cruz.
if a person tried to correct a pronunciation of a " whatever name" is beside their own name, that person is a Karen/ Richard. Geez. Chill.
@@akd7677 Ha! You cherry pick. It's my hometown. Besides, the comment is thoughtful criticism. It's not meant to put someone down, but to address the lack of care reporting on a serious event for those experiencing it, or those seeking information about people they care about. Facts matter.
Your comment below: 'Love to see this. Houses by the sea.' If a person takes pleasure in others suffering, that person is generally considered a troll.
Good hope that hellscape sinks into the ocean!!!!
GET READY REPENT AMEN 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
If only someone like Carl Sagan had told us this sort of thing would happen.
Oh, wait...
It's only going to get worse with all that rain next week
This some scary shit. Get out of Cali y’all I’m praying for y’all for real!
Humanity had their chance
Exactly
Imagine how much worse it would be if it was a tsunami.
I was standing right behind this guy at Moran Beach 👍great shot👍
People always want to believe that simply because ingenuity has built all the infrastructure in precarious terrains, that nature will somehow not damage it. Like the world is only 100 years young. So naïve.
Hello. Thank you, both.

Sorry to hear that; I feel for you... (I'm originally from Santa Cruz/Aptos). Also sad about Zelda's and other businesses in the Village, and Seacliff Pier. Hope everyone stays safe and dry.
Greetings from Japan.
You might want to Discuss having a Barrier Jetty creating a partial Bay at community meeting , Since the Pier isnt used commercially to unload ships. From the video I can see a natural cliffside to extend a Jetty from the end of it..... This would create new Harborages for Yachts and the like, also more business opportunities to maintain the New artificial Bay area..... Total insurance losses/costs to community would be much less than cost of this type of project.

I worked on this Wharf for a few years. My understanding was that the city was crying poverty in regards to MAINTAINING the wharf. There’s no money. These wharfs and piers were all built in a different era. An era when the USA paid its bills and didn’t have any debt at all.
There are solutions and ways to make it better. It just takes money and that’s all tied up for the foreseeable future🤷♂️
Even a larger problem is that it’s located in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Getting any permits to build anything will be impossible.
Well I could put Terrazzo flooring in the houses that get swamped...makes clean up easy and never have to replace the floor...!
That would be pretty disastrous for surfers and everyone else
When 20 years ago I first time saw the nearby beachhouses in La Jolla, St Monica etc. I asked myself how long it would take until they get washed away. Seems time has come...
Is the restaurant closed?
That's knarley

“, Jay Gregoric tries to remember which of his many pockets his so-called “ground score” is in. After a few minutes of searching, he pulls out a quarter-sized piece of white paper, folded up tightly. “I found this this morning,” says Gregoric, who’s homeless. A ground score is what it sounds like-a score of drugs that someone finds on the ground.
The bag has 20 bucks’ worth of what Gregoric calls “daytime” wrapped up in crisp white paper that he says he found under a picnic table at the park. It was a nice way to start his morning.”. Drug use and homelessness is pretty rampant in Santa Cruz
Oh stop it RangeTECHUS. You're standing upsidedown talking out of the wrong end again.
Im in santa cruz rn im terrified
Why is it that the stupid ones who build right up to the water's edge complain when this happens over and over? Just like those who build in river basin flood plaines. Give your heads a collective shake, folks! Pray for the victims' safety, though.
This doesn’t happen that much in California it’s super rare

Weather systems to NOT trigger high tides. The Moon and Sun regulate the tides.
Looks like the same storm that hit Florida a few months back..

It teaches Us do not invest Your treasures here because different disaster and calamities and it ransacked by thieves or destroyed by fire invest Your treasures in Heaven our Bank is bigger than in heaven no one can grab there. All things We have acquired is temporary most important is our life. That's how God loved us so we should focus our future and our citizenship is in heaven not in Earth with full of sins so put our trust and faith to God. He clean the earth with fires there wil be a great reset God will wash away our tears
