There is a couple in our church that had a Downs Syndrome baby. At first it seemed like a tragedy. He was in my Two year old Sunday School class. Because of how proactive they are in educating these sweet gifts from God, he was teaching the other children the hand signs to Jesus Loves You! Letting him sit on your lap felt like being hugged by God, because he was so so sweet.

Just be sure not to view this child as some kind of inspirational only good and innocent child. Yes, he has downs but, that does not make him different than other kids. Some times he won't be sweet. He will have tantrums and be naughty just as any other child. In fact he is just as any other child! His life is no more of a tragedy than an inspiration. He will live the life God has set out for him. Do not expect this child to be a precious baby angel. People with disabilities don't like this kind of thinking.

But my parents taught me to love Holland because they love me just the way I am. Yes, the world can be cruel but no matter how hard it gets, I can always come home to Holland; to my world that is different but not less and land softly in my family's unconditional love

Sorry to hear that Dan , I see it as an example of how not to treat others and ourselves . The world has a perverse idea of what disabled is . To me those in power whom harm others and our societies are the real disabled , they have mental disability but are still permitted , encouraged and celebrated to spread their harm of lack of empathy and compassion and who is anyone to label you anyway as we all have disabilities in some form or other , wether that be pysical , emotional, mental or spiritual or a combination of the above . You take care Dan oops nearly called you Danny then ;D

@ Dan....I want to tell you that you are precious to God. These things happen because we are in a fallen, sin cursed world, but our heavenly Father loves every one of us. The bible says that God doesn't look on the outward appearance, but He looks on the heart. I'm what you might call just an average person - nothing to stand out good or bad, but people have been very cruel to me, too....as well as many other people. There's abuse, neglect, meanness, cruelty...But God our Father loves us dearly.

    • @Lucailey
      @Lucailey Před rokem +2

No. No, people with disabilities do not want to be seen this way or treated this way. A disabled child is as much as a gift from God as a regularly abled child. Those of us in the disability community do not want to be thought of as completely innocent and pure people. Children like Alex are regular children. They aren't angels who are overly sweet and innocent. They have regular emotions just like we all do. They get angry, they do things out of spite. They don't always goodnaturedly do the right thing because they are angelic beings. They are people - full people. Their disability is just one part of who they are. They have their own unique personalities. They are individuals. They don't want to be treated as "precious" they want to be treated like the regular people that they are. Making them into saints is not the way to understand them as individuals.

These children can grow and be productive like anyone else , given the right tools and patience . Love them unconditionally , you are all they have , don't let doctors and nurses tell you otherwise . This is a good story to give parents the right to raise their baby no matter what . Bless them for doing what's right .

I've never experienced the emotions that a family goes through having a down syndrome baby, but every time I've been exposed to these children I can't help but marvel how beautiful, kind and loving they are. They just touch my heart with their innocence and love. Watching this movie it is so hard to believe the way things were thought about back in the day. For a doctor to keep a baby away from it's mother and suggest it go immediately into an institution is unfathomable.

I can't believe that these 'doctors' thought that this was the 'best' approach, to separate a child from it's parents just because he/she had Down Syndrome. I can't imagine the many parents that listened to such ill advice... and God only knows how those children fared. Thank God things have changed in that aspect, and that these children have a much better quality of life, care, schooling, and social skills.

I think a lot of children in those days were institutionalzed by how society looked uponu there disability and not how a child can thrive from a loving family which make the best of the situation, he was a loving child with all his own limitations, none66 of us is good at everything but maybe more rounded, which he stood out more because of his disability and people in those days did not want to understand and except. That was a shame for him and his parents as his mother worked tirelessly to change how disabled children are treated. She also wanted a baby without down syndrome and lost it and when she was talking at her awards ceremony and her son and husband arrived, her son could explain to a couple who had a downs syndrome baby what it was going to be like for them. We forget the qualities these children have and should embrace them for who they are.

I asked one of the nurses do the parents come to see them, and she said no. This was the kind of place this baby would have been placed in. It's so sad how people and parents respond to kids that look different from what we call normal.

Unfortunately even though this is several years later, misconceptions still exist about types of illnesses, races, and cultures. Everybody should be approached as a human being with the same rights as everyone else. With the same opportunities to achieve whatever they want to in their lives. No one should be held back because of some stereotype. That is so wrong. So very wrong!

I hope anyone watching n not having understood before, the challenges the parents n children as he or she grows up, may you have a different view n let your inner kindness shine thru, it’s in there, we all need it, but even more so a person w/Special needs. Life is difficult as it is, let’s not complicate it more by negative or cruel behavior, keep in mind how precious our children are, no matter what. Put yourselves in the parents shoes, better yet the human behind the challenge. If it were you or your child or grandchild how would you want to be treated? As unimportant, unable to succeed, or feel or give love? Or the person Believing he can, and he will be the best he can be. Remember this movie, it begins with the 1st step.. will you take that step? Be the change you want to see.

How can any person look at any other person and say such cold hearted things as that? How can someone see another human being and not want the best things for a fellow human? He didn't even suggest sending a school that would teach him or a place that was designed to help people (not that i think that is the thing people should do!) but this guy made it seem like he was saying "send the kid to a warehouse and don't look back!"

That is heartless! No matter what is wrong with a human being, they are still human! They deserve the dignity of people knowing that they are alive and that they matter! When my aunt had a Down child, her husband hit her and blamed her for eating too much Chinese food during the pregancy. This was in the forties. My cousin Billy was a happy child, very alone, and very unmanageable because there was no access to any education at all, not even public schools, and early intervention was unheard of. I later, in part inspired by my cousin, to work with special needs children--boy, was that an eye-opener. Some of the best kids I have ever met and I never went away exhausted or frustrated. They were so happy with just little things, like learning a new color, or how to fingerpaint, how to dress themselves. And undress, one kid just loved putting on his clothes, taking them off, folding them neatly, then putting them back on. Then he would just laugh and smile and hug me. He was so good and smart. Anyway, Down people have come into their own as part or our very diverse humanity--it is no longer a defect, it is just a different way to be human. We need difference!

My son Stephen was diagnosed at Rush St Lukes hospital Chicago at age of 5yrs old as having asd/learning diffs
Stephen is now 33yrs old . I found Early Intervention when he was 2yrs old
1st December 2022 Again we fight for him to have Assisted Living in his own home with 4/5 carers on Rota, and ABA Consultant coming in to Teach Stephen and Team.
Lovaas/early Intervention/ABA and gf/cf/soya free is way forward for Stephen.
At mo he's in residential care home, But i Pray to Jesus he gets chance he deserves.
Too many are dumped.with no opportunity to Progress. They can Progress just need chance.
    🙏🌲

32:26 this is why, that while yes, these kids can bring a lot of joy, they are also a large burden , and it is unfair to short-change and neglect the other family members for the one.

Yes thats truth..i have worked with mentally handicaped children ..They are very warm and Nice but they are slow..it is a harder responsibilitie for parents i think..And a mistake to sacrifice other siblings for these children..Each one needs attention ..

That doctor should not have been allowed to practice medical staff are suppose to be truthful but are not allowed to make decisions for their patients my children were born normal my daughter has a friend who has a mental disable as well as physically disabled she also has twins who were born normal but they treat their disabled just like the other two and love him just the same it takes a special person to care for a disabled child because it is very challenging

1:04:10 Oh, so it’s okay for him to be on Sesame Street in front of millions of people but it’s not okay for him to take a big bird toy with him to school? And later in the movie you’re on his case about being nice to other kids? “Just don’t be so damn friendly”? Madam, what the heck? You running out there and saying that looks a lot worse than what your son was doing.

Good movie but the mother expects too much from Alex as her friend tells her when hes growing up ." Dont expect from alex more than he can give you..Accept him like he is " so true !!He can read ,learn and is very nice and touching but he has a down syndrome..so he will never be exactly like a normal kid..He is Alex..
