    Talitha risking everything to try to save Zephyr at incredible, lethal risk to herself. That is heroism. Not video game moves. Not nifty powers. A willingness to Risk it for the Biscuit.

    Only with the Glasscannon crew does a viewer think: "Time to mount that pseudojawn for a Mid-Com Cav Dip Grapple Bone!" Thanks, GCN. It's always a blast, even when wincing at the proceedings.
    Considering the catastrophic combat opening, a week marred by not one but TWO asterisks, a legion of comments about Paizo's central design philosophy of Hero Points and bottlecapzonis, things worked out pretty well. One of the more entertaining combat slogs I've watched in a long time.

  • @Jackson79136
    @Jackson79136 Před měsícem +21

    Amazing episode, my initial thoughts:
    • Full respect to Troy for giving Joe the bottlecap, despite his hesitation that it came across as a get out of jail free card. Joe's earned it so many times over that it was due. I also respect how Troy played the snail throughout this episode, he definitely didn't go easy on the party but he also didn't play too tactical for something with -3 Int.
    • The flashback/dream sequence was fantastic and I really appreciate when they do these clear scripted narrative moments, when I've seen other shows try to hide them behind ultimately meaningless dice rolls.
    • I'm extremely happy Brother Ramius survived, he might be my favourite PC and his death would have been very bad for the party as there could be some hesitance to have a backup that fills the exact same role of dedicated healer.
    • Talitha dying sucks but nicely she is the only character who we can lose and still have a clear connection for her backstory that Matthew worked on to come up (Asta having received the Changeling Trait).
    • Zephyr losing her bow is unfortunate but forcing her into the frontline with Asta could actually be pretty beneficial to party survival. Though an extra frontliner would really help, speaking of which...
    • I'm really looking forward to Mathew's next character, especially as their isolated location is going to almost force them into having better knowledge of the area that could benefit the party.
    • I also think a new PC is an opportunity for Troy to weave in a clearer connection and goal for the current mission, Joe has been saying for a while that he feels a little lost and unfocused in this AP.
    This episode was a rollercoaster where I truly did not know what would happen and who might die from moment to moment, and at the end I was sad but satisfied with how it played out. I appreciate so much that the Glass Cannon crew are playing this like a real game in ways that so many other TTRPG shows just aren't, it's a true breath of fresh air.

    Emotional stakes are the hardest thing to pull off and do well. This was a glorious episode. Well played!

  •  Před měsícem +29

    I love how (seemingly) unforgiving Troy runs the game and doesn’t shy away from letting the dice decide. The adventure path and the system combined with the stingy amount of hero points/bottle caps might be making things extremely tough for the players, but as a spectator, I wouldn’t want to see plot armour reign.
    To me, the solution is quite simple - do not let hero points be a get-out-of-death card. Either disallow them entirely when it comes to death saves, or turn them into a reroll with the second result standing.

    • @sagiangrey
      @sagiangrey Před měsícem +1

      Agreed.

    • @RyanAcidhedzMurphy
      @RyanAcidhedzMurphy Před měsícem +3

      Totally disagree. These combats are a slog to watch when every single encounter is like this. AND, they are happening constantly.
      A SNAIL killed someone and was a harder fight than the supposed first BBEG. The system is clunky and ridiculous, the difficulty is moronic. They don't feel like heroes, or adventurers, or even competent when every single fight is a boss and they are constantly on the verge of death, and in this case, someone did die. TWO episodes fighting a flipping SNAIL. It isn't exciting, it isn't nerve wracking, it isn't fun. And it's clear from their faces, that none of them are really enjoying the way this has been going.
      They are getting no where, and at this rate not a single original character is going to live long enough to have any kind of story pay off. Having fights that are reasonable is not plot armor, it's part of having a fun, fair game.

    • @lued123
      @lued123 Před měsícem +3

      @@RyanAcidhedzMurphy I have seen some complaints about this AP, and it seems like this section in particular is a big offender. Just a huge gauntlet of back to back tough fights with level 2 characters. It's been non-stop fights since the bird Gorgas in the Thin Lands. This snail feels like it would be doable if the environment was perfectly neutral and everyone got average rolls, but Troy has been rolling like crazy and this water hazard is a huge hindrance.
      I think this was designed to be a healthy challenge for experienced players *who plan their characters around team comp*, and that's just not how they've been doing it. I saw someone on the game's subreddit say that it feels a lot smoother if you bump the players to level 3 as soon as they beat Kaneepo, and I do think that would have helped.

    • @RyanAcidhedzMurphy
      @RyanAcidhedzMurphy Před měsícem +2

      @@lued123 Sounds about right. They are 35 episodes in, which amounts to about as many hours of game play, and it feels like something like 70% or more has been slogging through ridiculously hard fights.
      I enjoy this group, and what little roleplay they have done with the characters has been good, but I think the game system is utter garbage. It seems designed to "rooster" block everything you want to do, constantly.
      I enjoy stuff like this because I want to see what happens next, and the answer always seems to be another, far too difficult, slog of a fight. Makes it hard to care about the characters because it feels like they're all going to die before they get anywhere. AND, the story because without the character connection it's just a mystery I could find the solution to online.

    • @lued123
      @lued123 Před měsícem +2

      @@RyanAcidhedzMurphy When you say "the game system" are you referring to Pathfinder 2E as a whole? Because I would disagree there. This is just a fairly deadly Adventure Path and they're in a notoriously sloggy section of it. PF2E works great if the encounters are balanced to the players. It's just that the person who designed this AP either accidentally overtuned it, or they intentionally designed it to appeal to a group that goes hard on tactics.
      In the GM Core, there's a nice table that's supposed to help you design encounters at an average level of danger, and this AP has repeatedly done that, but then added some environmental factor in that makes it way harder (darkness, the enemy being up in a tree, slippery rocks). Add on that most of these fights are single, powerful enemies that everyone struggles to hit at this level and it's a recipe for disaster. If the encounters were strictly by that table, or if the players were 1 level higher, I think this group would be having a much better time.

      @JFStandhope Před měsícem

      Given that most of Matthew's characters have died due to sheer bad luck, badly designed/unplaytested sections, and Troy making less than optimal decisions as a GM (and yes, I go hard on fellow GMs when I think they're making bad choices), I feel for him and honestly don't know why he still plays Pathfinder with Troy. Troy is a brilliant CoC/DG GM but his antagonistic style really doesn't let his Pathfinder games blossom.

    • @templar1701
      @templar1701 Před 26 dny

      @@JFStandhopeI really don’t get this. The most aggravating part of this whole fight has been the players refusing to adapt and use other combat skills other than repeatedly attacking. It’s definitely one of the most difficult encounters in the book but Troy gives them 2 bottle caps at the beginning of the ep and Hubert actually helps which is pretty significant. Plus his rulings on falling into the water are super light on them as well.

No more frolicking across blood rivers unprepared. This is a dangerous place and you've seen the consequences. I know it must seem incredibly cumbersome to get back up in PF2e once you get downed. But it is one of the main ways that the system prevents the usual "yo-yo" healing that happens in other systems, when characters keep getting back up every round, with some systems even making it the optimal choice to let characters get KO'd and then be brought back.
    After a few levels, the chance of getting downed in single hits gets greatly reduced, it gives the party (and the enemies) more wiggle room to work with. Except Casters, they're still super fragile until after level 10, since having 100HP is the sweet spot.

    Quick question, and it might be a little silly-Matthew mentioned off-handedly in his character introduction video that Talitha's background was Wanderlust, and according to the player's guide, that would mean her deviant ability would be of the troll classification. Eerie Flicker (as mentioned in this episode) seems to be tied to the Sense of Belonging background, and is of the wraith classification. I know it doesn't matter at this point, and I don't bring it up to point out a mistake, if there even was one (which I doubt). It just grabbed my attention, and I couldn't stop from wondering lol. That look on Troy’s face at the end says it all. 35 episodes in, 2 PC deaths? It’s time to take a step back and think about if this is the nature of the story that the crew wants to tell.
    I think a confluence of changes could pivot the tone/nature of the story here. As always, the dice really told the story here. PCs rolling poorly, GM rolling exceptionally well.
    Bottlecaps, level up, gradual bonus progression, tactics, new PC all could change up the tone/feel of the game and narrative. I leave it to the good folks on the show to figure it out for themselves. I’ll still be here loving every second of the performance!

    You know what just occurred to me
    Your party lacks a min maxing munchkin who's not above the teeniest bit of metagaming in order to keep the party safe tactically
    Like not a really really bad munchkin but your group gets really into the narrative and sometimes overlooks what the tactically best option would be for the sake of the roleplay

      ya giantslayer would have had so many deaths had it not been for baron, and the cool thing was that baron was built well and somewhat minmaxed but the character was not sacrificed in the process. i think barons prodigious ability to wreck giant kind made his character that much more interesting

    I find the problem so far is this is a heavily combat focused adventure. The whole walk through the tree, nearly every room had a fight with some stupidly tough monstrosity.
    Part of this is on the adventure, part of it I feel is also on Troy. He did say he'd keep the challenge up, but this is just so brutal to watch.

    • @lued123
      @lued123 Před měsícem +1

      I think it's mostly the adventure. It does just have a ton of back-to-back fights with disadvantageous arenas, and I think it expects you to build your characters around team comp and covering all your bases, rather than jut making a cool character and then looking for synergy. Like imagine that monkey fight without Zephyr's good ranged attacks, or Kaneepo without Ramius's Light spell. And on top of that Troy is just getting crazy rolls. All Troy himself has really done is nerf Hero Points, and that's worked fine for this group before.

    Zephyr leaving her bow behind made no sense. The snail goes for Talitha, brings her down and then would move to Zephyr. Zephyr's next turn she could move, Flurry of Blows and then move again. Instead, Zephyr just stands there doing nothing coz she's a Ranged Monk w/ no bow. Then when they're discussing whether to run away, Zephyr's forced to leave it behind.

      Definitely the right choice. Almost certainly more deaths if they don't flee. They only did like 5 points of damage this episode so unless it was already near death they would have been hard pressed to not lose another PC. Especially since Zephyr didn't have her bow.

    Honestly, I am happy to finally have a show to watch in which death actually happens. Most other podcasts are way too light on the party and that just kills all tension for me, so kudos to Troy. Love that there seems to be no fudging but instead gives the players some leeway in more subtle ways, like using the hedgehog to help and having the snail start eating.
    Though, I have to say one thing that was kind of a bummer: I wished they would have let the feeling of the character death linger and not interrupt it with silly music. This is honestly the strength of an RPG to have these feelings. They are hard to replicate in many other mediums.
    Anyway, excited to see what character Matt will bring to the table, and also how Zephyr will handle this death!
