  • IS SPACEBALLS BETTER THAN STAR WARS???
We are 2 Star Wars fans who somehow haven't seen (or at least don't remember seeing) Spaceballs before. And this was genuinely one of the best parody movies we've ever seen! A lot of references to not just Star Wars but also Star Trek, Indiana Jones, Planet of the Apes and much more!
Conclusion: is Spaceballs better than Star Wars?? Well... no, perhaps not. But it was a very enjoyable and funny movie that kept as entertained from start to finish with an engaging story and many many many funny scenes, more than I can count!
If you have any movie recommendations you would want us to react to next, let us know in the comments down below!
Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!

Mel Brooks needed to get approval from George Lucas to avoid copyright infringement. Lucas loved it but because he was about to reissue the movies with the now-famous digital enhancements he insisted that Brooks should not dress Lone Star like Han Solo. So Mel dressed him like Indiana Jones.
Lucas also insisted there be no merchandising from Spaceballs so as not to conflict with new Star Wars toys. That requirement led to the creation of the merchandising scene.

Great reaction, you caught most of the jokes. Here are a few more things:
    1. Chapter Eleven is a bankruptcy filing in the U.S. So the beginning of the crawl contains a joke to start.
    2. "When did we get to Disneyland?" was a reference to the dwarves of Snow White.
    3. The Mercedes was a 2001 model, and they had that guy on the big drums on the bridge, both references to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
    4. Entering Yogurt's merchandising operation was a very direct parody of The Wizard of Oz. The four characters were parallels, the intimidation with the flames and booming voice, etc.
    5. The chest burster and John Hurt were from the original Alien. The song and dance exit comes from a very famous Warner Brothers cartoon, One Froggy Evening (1955) about a singing frog. Definitely worth seeing, no spoilers.
    6. The music in the "wandering across the desert" scene was almost directly from Lawrence of Arabia. And the Dink-Dinks were dinking along to Colonel Bogie's march, used in Bridge on the River Kwai.
    7. The Millennium Falcon was also parked at the diner at the end, but blink and you miss it.
I see that other commenters are telling you all about the George Lucas angles, so I will defer to them. Fun time!

      @TheGeekheads  Před 24 dny +4

And Bridge on the River Kwai starred Alec Guiness. The superduper long shot of Spaceball 1 at the beginning was a nod to the Nostromo from Alien. The Chambers of the Great Know It All were the exact same set used in Wizard of Oz (other than the Yogurt statue).

So they got a toy Han Solo in carbonite and hid him on the sets. A lot of them got removed or cut due to fear of Lucas suing or some such. Another Star Wars parody you should check out is Team StarKids' musical parody called Ani. They parody other things as well, but Ani is unique in that the band sings all the songs (kind of like backing tracks for movies). Ani focuses on Anakin (Darth Vader) as he wanders down memory lane and thinks back on a past love. There are allusions to the films and it would be fun to see how much you catch. Being posted on CZcams directly from Team StarKid, you could watch and react to the show in its entirety (if you want) with little to no editing necessary. Oh yeah for sure, we used the term taking shots more as lighthearted teasing/joking, nothing negative. I guess it's a generational difference of how the term is used.
My original edit was 30 minutes longer but some jokes where our reaction was only just a light chuckle or that we compelety missed had to be cut because CZcams wouldn't count it as fair use anymore and the video would've been copyrighted and blocked in most countries. We'll try to make the videos longer in the future Thanks for the feedback, we always appreciate it!

Parody (music) and spoof (film) are recognized as forms of humor and art and are respected as such but if there are contracts and agreements to protect creative works, you can have agreements to produce a spoof with no issues so most everyone is happy.
Next: "Hardware Wars" is a must see if you are a Star Wars fan. There is the original version and a special edition with added effects.
