The Big Splash - Formation of the Moon

  • This short film charts the story of the formation of Earth's single natural satellite - the Moon. The most widely accepted theory is that, shortly after it formed, the proto-Earth was struck at an oblique angle by another protoplanet, roughly the size of Mars. Astronomers call this interloper Theia. Debris from the impact was flung into space. Some of this escaped, but a lot of it remained and formed an orbiting ring of debris around the Earth. The material in this ring eventually coalesced, very quickly, to form our Moon. This is often known as the Giant impact Hypothesis.

    • @DELTA_OMEGA
      @DELTA_OMEGA Před rokem

      @@sigisoltau6073 1) It is not necessary to invoke an unlikely impact between protoplanets to have material in orbit around the Earth that gives rise to the Moon. The material was already there and from that material the Moon was formed like all other bodies in the Solar System. 2) A protoplanet clears its orbit and prevents any planetesimal from becoming as large as Mars! This is why protoplanet collisions are very unlikely and Lagrange points do not change this aspect. 3) Impacts cause craters, do not produce satellites or planets! Craters like Hellas, Utopia and the boreal basin on Mars or like Vredefort in South Africa or like Aitken Basin on the Moon. 4) The iron core of a planet is directly proportional to the amount of iron in the accretion disk that generated it, for example Mercury is very rich in iron, because in the inner nebula there was a large amount of iron. 5) Occam's Razor suggests that the simplest theory is probably the most correct; what could be simpler than saying that the Moon was formed like all the other bodies in the Solar System, that is, starting from a secondary condensation core with respect to the Earth?
      However, I cannot exclude that the impact theory is correct, I find it unlikely ... I was not there 4.6 billion years ago to see how things went.

    • @sigisoltau6073
      @sigisoltau6073 Před rokem

      @@DELTA_OMEGA One has to remember a few things.
      1: there were a lot of planetesimals ranging in size from roughly Pluto sized, to several times that of earth's mass if you include the gas giant cores. So collisions were fairly common during the planet formation process.
      2: impacts today, even those you mentioned don't produce moons. At least not as large as our moon. The debris either gets drawn in by the planet or moon the asteroid impacted, stays in orbit as some of the gas giants minor moons could be fragments from such impacts, or got ejected and now orbit the sun or left the solar system. Uranus orbits the sun on a 97 degree axial tilt. It's possible that Uranus got hit by one or two objects large enough to knock it on its side. Some of the moons could be fragments from those impacts.
      3: it is possible that the moon formed like earth from the same accretion disk. But how was it captured by the earth? Did it form around the earth already orbiting it? Or was it later captured by the earth? Both seem unlikely. If it formed in the same orbital area near earth, its iron content would be higher and thus its density would be higher as well. The moon's density is 3.34 tons per cubic meter, which means it has relatively low iron in it. If it formed near earth then it would have quite a bit more iron. If it formed further out where there was more rock than metal, like where Mars or the asteroid belt is today, how did it get captured by earth. Yes, when Jupiter migrated slightly inward from where it first formed, it caused all kinds of orbital changes in the asteroid belt and other objects. If the moon formed somewhere between Mars and Jupiter, and got pushed into the inner solar system, how did it get captured by the earth?
      4: the Mars sized impact theory seems the most likely. It explains earth's axial tilt, and why the moon rocks sampled and analyzed so far are so similar to those on earth. Theia, that Mars sized object that impacted with the earth, most likely formed in roughly the same orbital zone as earth. When it hit, not only was most of it absorbed by the earth, but the debris over time formed the moon. Since both objects may have had similar rock composition, it would explain why the moon rocks are so similar in composition to those here on earth.

    Science fictions are entertainment. It is up to the audiences whether to believe real or fiction, and not everyone has education to tell between real and fiction. The intelligence of each community levels at the bottom, because those who have biggest voices, not the most intelligent, be heard.

      @@spaceboffin - Yes, mankind has invented its own "gods", brought about as a diversion to the true God, who sent His Son Jesus into the world to save those who choose to believe in Him. This whole deep space era we're in shows, even more clearly, God's power to create everything - a telescope doesn't detract from that, it merely shows it. Your videos are well-done and thought provoking. However, you have left out the Creator. I hope someday you find Him, then all your work will be complete.
