    for N2, can I use one stick bond in the middle and then put 2 dot symbols on top and 2 on the sides of each nitrogen? or each atom has to always have 8 bonds in total?

    • @madelynfernandez9173
      @madelynfernandez9173 Před 7 lety

      and does it imply to every lewis structure? or is there an exception?

    • @sonyabirazian8921
      @sonyabirazian8921  Před 7 lety

      No you cannot use one bond. Most need 8 electrons to fill its outer shell. There are exceptions - such as Be and B ( there are more)!

    • @dapdizzy
      @dapdizzy Před 5 lety

      Could you get be a hint on where does the magic octet (8 electrons) come from? Why it is eight that gives it balance?

    • @fkncompton7124
      @fkncompton7124 Před 4 lety +1

      @@dapdizzy I think it's because for example the second shell can have an s and a p orbital, and they can only hold 2+6 electrons in total

    • @dapdizzy
      @dapdizzy Před 4 lety +1

      Fkn Compton makes sense. Thank you!
