  • Kirk Day breaks down the Edmonton Oilers losing game 1 against the Vancouver Canucks after leading 4-1. The Oilers have had a tough defensive pairing of Darnell Nurse and Cody Ceci and it was very prevalent in this game. Changes will need to be made by the Oilers staff if they want a stronger chance at winning the series. Leon Draisaitl has been listed as day-day by head coach Kris Knoblauch, a very tough revelation ahead of game 2 as the Oilers will need all hands on deck

I think it's hilarious how every single mistake Ceci makes gets blamed on Nurse by people who don't understand what blown coverage looks like. I'm not saying Nurse is flawless (far from it), but one of the goals Wednesday night was clearly caused by Ceci being lost while Nurse is trying to cover the front the net as best he can. Ceci dives in to try and stick check when it's too late and the puck is already in the net. Is Nurse overpaid for what he brings on the ice? Sure. Has Ceci been an issue that everyone and their dog has known about for 2 summers now? Absolutely.
Holland wasn't willing to pay the price for Tanev but he bit on Henrique and Carrick? How is that working out right now?

The Oilers needed to trade for a Playoff Goaltender, and more size this past year (and they had a chance with Marc Andre Fluery and Lehner this past 2 years). But did nothing. Skinner? Wow...Canucks now in 5...

Everyone keeps saying that for the Canucks to beat the Oilers, the Canucks cant just be a 1.5 offense line team. But people seem to forget that in order for the Oilers to beat the Canucks, The Oilers can't be a 1 pairing D team.

Ceci s analytics have been atrocious for several years. They needed to be split up 3 years ago. Not sure why they won’t, it’s costing them games. When you break down the Vegas series last year that pairing single hand idly lost it for us.

Canuck fan comment here. I don't mean to rub this in, but I haven't watched a lot of full Oilers games this season. I was basically shocked by how much ice Edm gave Vancouver in game 1, and how shaky Nurse was in key moments. Anyway, Edmonton has a better chance at a Cup than Vancouver but if Nurse doesn't play better I can't see you winning it all.

Vancouver knows they are vulnerable without Demko. They were lucky to win game 1. They have Skinner to thank. He always bounces back and has shown a lights out performance in the past after a bad game. I dont think that the Vancouver Canucks are so good they can imobolize the Oilers to the point of getting by with lacklustre goaltending. If Skinner can amp up his game and play to his full potential then this will not be easy for them. Same ol story with hockey, it takes a team to win a cup but often times goalies can win it themselves. The Canucks players arent like the fans. They realize they were lucky to win game 1. Again Skinner handed it to them.

  • @albertnordine6546

Oilers will never win without a good goaltender. 2 banked goals off him because he is out of position, long shot from blue line and wasn't screened and last goal, way out of position. Half decent goalie's will make those saves. Copy of Vegas series last year.

Nurse is NOT the problem. He had the best +/- on the team for the 2022/2023 year. If all 6 defensemen were Nurse clones it would be terrific. He is overpaid, so he is a good $4M or $5 M defenseman. That’s better than average.
Bouchard is a great offensive producer. He is not very good defensively. Makes lots of mistakes. Gets away with it because of his defensive partner.
The loss was a total team effort. McDavid had ZERO shots. The effort was consistently bad top to bottom. Skinner was shaky on many shots. Blame the team.

It is a shame how the Canucks weren't called for any real penalties. It is a shame how the NHL does not protect its star players. This is how sh!$@t teams like Vancouver advance in the playoffs. For the good of the game the NHL needs to call a foul a foul. Tyler Meyers should be suspended.
