Old Oilers fan thinks the Oilers should have paid for their bad decision(Holland ) of not signing both Holloway and Broberg when they could have had them at reasonable prices. The Oilers did the right thing not to match the offer sheets. They chose to chase money and put the organization into a dilemma while the organization is building a win or bust culture. Can’t keep players who are not aligned. Also it will affect the morales of veteran players who took friendly deals to re-sign. No grudges against the 2 players but they might regret their decisions. From a big picture perspective, the 2 players gone and Ceci traded, that solve Oilers’ salary caps to have flexibility and potential to build a more formidable team by trade deadline. So yes, very astute decisions and strategic moves by Oilers. In fact, I felt sorry for the 2 players to be blindsided by their agents’ greed.

Agreed, I think it was a mistake not to match Holloway offer from St. Louis blues ! having said that I also understand Oilers are in a tough spot in this situation.

The Oilers will pull a Vegas/Tampa move and place Kane on LTIR and load up at the deadline and bring Kane back for the playoffs

I could see them not matching and taking the picks since they have none. The 2nd and 3rd round picks are better than what they traded away and could be used for a deadline deal.

Do not part with Beau he will be a stud D man in a year! Toronto isn’t the first team to ask for Beau, giving up Broberg knowing you have Beau in the AHL is a fair trade!

Broberg doesn't want to stay so just drop him off at ST Blues and get the second round pick and try and keep Holloway. But if Holloway leaves then his lose and he won't be on a team that won't be close to win the Stanley Cup.. Hopefully Holloway stays and wants to win a cup, he should stay

Both doesn't make sense. The whole point of keeping Broberg is to NOT weaken a contending team. Broberg should be MORE valuable than either Ceci or Kulak, but is NOT more valuable than both.

Kane needs time to heal properly if he receives surgery and goes on LTIR. Maybe till the new year or longer. A healthy Evander Kane is a very important piece of the puzzle for the Oilers in the 2025 playoffs. Kane on LTIR gives Oilers some time. I think the Oilers have to do everything possible to match both Broberg and Holloway with their offer sheets! Broberg has been treated poorly by Holland/Jackson over the last few years. He can't be blamed for signing a life changing contract . Holloway has been going up and down like a yo you between the Oilers and the Condors for a while and sees an excellent contract opportunity from the Blues. Both these young players are pretty tight with each other as team mates and friends from Bakersfield and the Oilers. The Oiler locker room will be totally focussed on winning the Stanley Cup and will not harass these guys in any way if Oilers match . They're all pros. Most importantly regarding Broberg ,how do you let a 22 year old,6'4 ,fast skating , talented ,mobile D Man( rare NHL commodity) with a great stick get poached after developing him for 4-5 years or so? The Oilers definitely can't let Broberg go this year . If they want to trade Broberg in Aug./Sept. 2025 then their return will be much better than a 2nd round pick. My guess is he ends up as a top 4 D Man this year and he has potential to be a top 2 in the future. Remember Paul Coffee is his direct coach. This mess has been caused by Jeff Jackson's( and Holland's but he's gone) ruthless arrogance/poor management skills of the two best young prospects in the Oilers system. If Jackson loses 1 or both of these players, it's squarely on Jackson.

you are right Savard would be a great addition, but the Habs will hold out till the tradedeadline, retain 1/2 the salary and get a number one pick, which Edmonton doesn’t have next yr . Kane alone on ltir is not enough unless you are going to play with minimum roster. Someone has to go to keep both.

I like Broberg. I think he becomes a good puck moving defender. Holloway I am less sanguine about. He looks more like a third fourth line winger so less valuable. But they are both young talented first round oiler draft picks that they should hate to lose. They don't have enough cap space for both of these guys. That's why it is so fun. Ooo I'd trade Savard for Broberg in a flash. Give him two years to bloom in Montreal. Yeah you are not getting Larsson. David Savard will be hurt, maybe when you most need him. He has played 54,62,62 and 60 games in the last four years. Oilers in their cap situation cant afford a guy who misses a quarter of the season on STIR.
